Or it could be only Frog's Masamune, and it's a simple mixup to someone that doesn't know what Frog's weapon is.

I feel that's likely. After all, there's a Masamune in just about every freaking RPG around. So, of course there'd be some confusion. Though I do think Frog's is the only one that's NOT a katana.

I've been archive binging. WM, when arguing with BM and the Elder about which newcomer has the strange power (Luca has the Mistress of Flames, Frog has the Masamune, and Gato has the twins), mentions that Frog's strange power is "like Edge's". So I think it might be more than just a name.

Huh. Good catch, MFD. I was almost certain Rydia was just mistaking the name, but... Maybe it's important to keep in mind that the reason the name Masamune is attached to so many powerful RPG swords is because Masamune was a legendary sword smith. It could be that all of them resonate with Hope.

One legend is that of Muramasa and Masamune testing their blades in a river: Muramasa's cut everything that crossed its path, while Masamune's wouldn't (or would cut a leaf that would heal on the other side), a monk observing Masamune's could distinguish between what it should and should not harm. Might be a stretch, but it's possible to read that as the blade aiding good and harming evil, which would make sense for Hope, since its Wave bolstered heroes' spirits into not giving up, and practically turned villains into mustache-twirling caricatures.

I guess it will depend if Alex still thought about names the way he did for Sim City's Wright when he played Chrono Trigger.

Edit: baroned by a better theory.
Hey, the comic seems to be updating kind of regularly. Maybe we should vote to spread the word.

Well, again we come to the tricky part of this comic. This setting is NOT based on the video games, it's based on Alex William's *impressions* of those video games. That's why SimCity's Dr Wright is responsible for Green Megaman, why the Drab Lord's name was Spoony, why Baron has a storehouse of duplicated items and a final party that is level 99, and why Daos and his buddies were an indestructible force of terror and death rather than a bunch of psuedo-divine wannabes that routinely get their asses kicked by a bladed tuning fork.

Thinking that all the Masamunes are connected would be very much in keeping with what else we know about young Alex's constructed fantasies about the logic of the games.

Edit: And I've said it before, but it bears repeating that this is one of the many reasons I'm looking forward towards the FFVI arc: did our Alex rename Relm "Hitler", put a fake mustache on her, and then spend the rest of the game making her order enemies around? I so want to believe that...

What is wrong with you?

Also, as for Masamune just coincidentally having the same name across game worlds...

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS COINCIDENCE IN VIDEOLAND.

Not good enough for a theory on its own, but it is a good law of Videoland to support other evidence.

I guess since they are referring to Edge's Masamune as singular, that Alex didn't dupe it like he did Excalibur?

Personally, I did it on my first play of the game to give Edge a little more attack.

Why not just dupe the Spoon?

You can't. You can only dupe weapons and shields.

My personal favorite thing to do was to duplicate one of the free mythril weapons you find on the ground so you don't have to grind for cash to get all the stuff from Mythril Town, since generally that's the only point in the game I'm hurting for cash.

I think I just figured out why I like this particular strip so much. This comic has, since the day Alex first swore at that cat, reveled in taunting us with how much we didn't know about the setting. It was really quite frustrating. But this strip pays it back by demonstrating that, as clueless as we have been, Rydia has been just as clueless - but about a different subset of the story.

Of course, now Rydia knows a lot of what we know and *all* of what she knows, but that's life.

The only way it could be more comforting to our poor, curious and mildly confused souls is if it was like Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and the author himself expressed confusion and a need to go back and read it again, but I have considerably more faith in JayDee's consistency and ability to eventually explain than I do CLAMP's.
