WATERTOWN — Tip O’Neill won the hearts and votes of many during his political career. And although he wasn’t there to see it, his Irish charm was on full display at Town Hall last Saturday.

During a mock press conference held by New Rep Theater to promote their new one-man show, “According to Tip,” O’Neill was portrayed as a man who cared about the people.

The play features Emmy award-winning actor Ken Howard as O’Neill. Howard, who also starred on the hit ’70s TV show “The White Shadow,” and more recently in the film “Michael Clayton,” was in character for the mock press conference.

The play covers O’Neill’s life from growing up in Cambridge through the Vietnam War, according to a news release by New Rep.

“The battles we are currently having are the same battles Tip fought during the ’70s,” said director Rick Lombardo.

“To go over all of his accomplishments, you would need eight hours,” said Howard, “We tried to touch on some of his highlights.” ...continue reading
