She was 77. Born in the Bronx, NY, she started her career at the age of 16 as a Radio City Rockette, and went on to dance in "Can Can" and other Broadway musicals, as well as the movie adaptations including "Guys and Dolls" and "The Pajama Game." She was a dancer throughout the 1950s and '60s in films such as "Singin' in the Rain," and the Alan Freed movies including "Rock Around the Clock." She also danced on TV variety shows including "The Ed Sullivan Show," "The Milton Berle Show" and "The Jackie Gleason Show." At the suggestion of Jack Nicholson, whom he met while working on "Drive, He Said," she shifted from performing to costume supervising and design. Bernay served as costumer and costume designer on films including "Hearts of the West," "Home Alone," "Running on Empty," "The Spanish Prisoner," "Sunshine State," and "The Hours" and on TV shows including "The White Shadow", "Miami Vice" and "Undeclared."
