Fire Sale - 1977 Fire Sale is a comedy about a very disfunctional Jewish family. Benny Ficus, views his two sons, Russel and Ezra, as good for nothings and his wife is just plain looney. Russel is attempting to prove his self worth to his father by trying to save the failing family business while Benny is laid up from a heart attack. He trys to do while having to deal with his crazy dillussional mother and his crippling fear of his father's disapproval. Ezra, who was disowned for walking out on the family business, is high school basketball coach who's record is like 2-146, is dodging rocks from unhappy basketball fans and dodging his wife's nagging child adopting demands. He seemingly solves both problems by adopting a 6'8" black 16 year old orphaned basketball phenom (played by Byron Stewart). Byron Stewart plays Booker T. He has no last name because no one stepped up to sign the papers when he was born, and his mom left him in the hopital. Booker T. or Captian *explative* (they beep what ever it is out) as he's known on the court is a one man wrecking crew with a basketball. Ezra Ficus sees Booker T. playing and believes he's the answer to his prayers. He can give his wife the child she's always wanted (all be it a 6'8" black 16 year old) and a way to win some basketball games so he won't have to go crawling back to his father's clothing store. If you see this flick you'll notice that Booker T. is a pretty similar character to Warren Coolidge. Byron Stewart was 21 when he did Fire Sale This movie is the role that got Byron Stewart the role as Warren Coolidge. Ken Howard thought that it would be great to have one of the ball players be taller than he was so he could look up at him, which wasn't an easy to find because Ken was like 6'6" I believe. Ken Howard was watching Fire Sale on TV and immediately called Bruce Paltrow. Incidently Bruce was watching the same thing and Ken didn't even have to tell Bruce why he was calling! And, the rest is White Shadow history. I got a copy of this movie solely to see Byron Stewart in his first credited role, but I was pleasently surprised. This is a VERY funny movie with lots of great acting. It's worth getting if you can find a copy. IMDb's Fire Sale page |

Seriously,i always thought that byron stewart was the real deal-as in,having the most believable and convincing basketball skills out of anyone on the show.I mean,he was 6'8 for goddsakes! This movie fire sale sounds like something i definitely dig and would be interested enough in checking out.I'd like to see what his acting skills had to offer during his pre- white shadow years. This movie sounds like a rare gem to me.His acting was always fairly underrated to me,and he always did a great job of portraying his character(the big bad black dude) in such convincing fashion i might add. |

I always viewed Cool as a "gentle giant" of sorts. BTW - His hoops skills are even more impressive in Fire Sale |
