The Ice Level hate thread; and other video game no-nos

So over on Mercury Ice there seems to be a general consensus that ice levels have no place in a video game on account of being tedious and irritating to navigate while also inflicting negative effects on your characters, such as Cloud getting hypothermia in FFVII or sliding out of the arena.

I remember hating all the Crash Bandicoot ice levels except for that one where you get to ride the polar bear. I kept replaying it trying to get the all box gem and I managed to do it once or twice but it was so hard :P

What other things do you really dislike in games?
Personally one of my biggest video game pet peeves is the annoying tutorials they tend to include.
Fair enough if it's the first game in a series, then it's okay to have a compulsory tutorial - but there's still no reason you shouldn't be able to disable tutorials in the settings and work it all out for yourself, as I prefer to do.
Especially for replaying games, it's a bit off-putting to have to repeat the same tutorial level over and over and over.

I was playing Golden Sun: Dark Dawn a while ago (I need to pick that up again, actually) and there were literally HOURS of tutorials in there. I'm sure dinowoman remembers me getting severely pissed off at the game for forcing me into unnecessary tutorials - I'D PLAYED THE PREQUELS.
Dammit, I almost turned it off and refused to keep playing at some points, it just takes control of your whole DS and goes through these slow tedious cutscenes showing you deliberate movements and how to use everything in the game.

It even solves half of the puzzles for you! It doesn't give you a chance to work it out for yourself and suggest you apply that knowledge to other similar puzzles, it literally says this kind of thing: "Matthew! Push the tall thing that looks movable into the slot that's right next to it! Attaboy".

AGAGHASSFG>LDJ:HK: THAT IS SO FUCKING ANNOYING TO ME
DAMMIT

The bloody Pokémon ones too, that douche who's "had [his] coffee now" and shows you how to catch a weedle.
No matter how many times you've seen it before, no matter how many Pokémon games you've played - nevermind already having caught a rattata and a pidgey beforehand using the Pokéballs you obtained in Pallet Town.

WE. KNOW. HOW. TO. CATCH. POKéMON. PISS OFF!!

Would you like to go on an adventure?

What was that? Let me ask you again. Would you like to go on an adventure?

etc.

Tutorials not being optional can also be annoying, like you said.

Also, unskippable cutscenes and unpausable cutscenes.

I can see the point in having tutorials in all the games in a series - after all not everyone who buys, say, Pokémon Black has played all the previous games - but they should definitely be skippable. It's just... irritating... if not. On a related note, I get very annoyed at games that don't have a manual or a readme or something else with the commands listed - I don't always remember everything the tutorial tells me, especially if I'm playing on a PC and there are about a hundred different keyboard commands. (Damn you, Fable! Though I'm pretty sure that DOES have a manual.)

Haha yeah I agree, but for a game that follows directly on from one of the previous games, it's probably worth actually PLAYING the previous games first -.-

Eh, I dunno. If you count Ice Path north of Blackthorn as an ice level, then there's one that I don't hate. I even loved the Crash Bandicoot ones. I enjoy the extra challenge of having to navigate while sliding. At first, anyway.

I gotta say unskippable cut scenes piss me off. Like when you start a new game on Dragon Age, it should check if you already have a save and then offer to let you skip it -.- Same with tutorials.
