Indian Ocean, approaching Arabian Sea, enroute to Sea of Aden to the Red Sea Bridge, USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) May 12th, 1984 0746 hours, local Rear Admiral Nick Tyler read over the dispatch that the Lieutenant JG had just handed him, thanking the young man before looking it over while sipping his coffee. The grizzled Admiral had seen combat many a time. He had joined the Navy at the age of 18, completing his training for the F4U Corsair in July of 1945. He saw very little action before the end of the war. Nick had stepped up to train in the Navy's latest aircraft, the F9F Panther, a new jet aircraft, as soon as it was made available, which put him on the frontline when hostilities broke out in Korea. He flew mostly ground attack missions, but had a couple kills to his name, mostly Yak-9s and two Il-10s. He bounced through a few more aircraft before getting his certification in the F-8 Crusader just in time for the Vietnam War. He was able to add 3 MiG-17s to his record before he was taken off the roster for injury, which he was hit by a drunk driver during some R&R in Manilla. After re-couping, Nick was offered the chanse to train into the new F-14 Tomcat, which he lunged at the chanse. As luck would have it, Nick would be able to fly with VF-2 over Vietnam during their tour, but it would be his last tour when the Vietnam War ended. A few more promotions, and Nick was promoted into command of the Kitty Hawk Battlegroup. Nick shook his head as he set his coffee down. "XO. C'mere." Nick said, waving over his executive officer, Captain Tim Sterling. The Captain walked over. "Something wrong, sir?" The man asked. "Yeah, take a look at this." Nick said, handing over the dispatch. "Those raghead sonsofbitches would be stupid to come after us." Tim breathed as he read it. "Yeah, well, those ragheads happen to have Tomcats and a pisspot full of eurotrash ASMs. Get the fleet to General Quarters for now, heads on a swivel. BarCAPs up and flying in short order." Nick ordered, already looking over the map of the area. "What's the plan, sir?" Tim asked. "Well, we need to get into the Red Sea, which intel says the Commies are watching. We may have to take the Suez by force. At least in the Red Sea, we can hope for some help from the Saudis. If Ivan lobs a few weapons in the wrong city, the entire Muslim population will go apeshit on them." Nick said, pointing to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, which was the holiest city to the Islamic religion. "Too bad the Israelis aint in the Sinai right now." Tim mused. "Who says they wont be soon again?" Nick askied, "Anyways, we'll assume a standard battle formation. Detach one of our subs to scout ahead, and have the other stick by to cover us. We'll have regular BarCAPs up, and I want the Intruders and new planes up there too with anti-surface weapons. If any ships show up, or ground targets pose a threat, we're going to have more than our dicks in our hands." "Aye, aye, sir." Tim replied. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the hours that followed, the Kitty Hawk battlegroup was re-arranged into a formation that would surround the carrier with the other capital ships of the fleet. Two BarCAP formations went up, with another two short-range BarCAP formations to cover inside the fleet. Over the Arabian Sea The Hawkeye from VAW-116 picked up 11 unidentified Radar contacts approaching from 340 miles away, in two groups. The first one looked to be about five aircraft approaching from the North at about 5,000 feet. The second group, moving in from the west was a bit trickier to make out, the contacts were spread out over a wide area, moving much faster at a much faster speed at a much lower altitude. By the Radar operators best guess, it looked to be about 3 aircraft of an undecernable types. The first group looked to be Tu-16 Badgers. Order of Battle 5 Unkown aircraft at 5,000 feet and 340 miles away, most likely Tu-16s 3 Unkown aircraft at less than 1,000 feet and 300 miles away, either Tu-22s, or MiG-25s |

BarCAP Group 1, E-2C Hawkeye, Callsign "AngelEye" "So much for the skipper's theory on ragheads." The Lieutenant JG breathed. "Amen." The Lieutenant next to him said, going to his radio, "Hunter One, this is AngelEye. We're tracking multiple bogies coming in from vector Zero-Zero-Zero. First group approaching at Angels Five, at Three-Four Zero Miles. Second group is at Angels One, Three-Zero-Zero Miles." "Copy that. We'll come around to bearing Zero-Zero-Zero. Permision to engage?" Hunter One asked. "Roger that, you are weapons free. I say again, you are free to engage all bogies." The controller said. "Roger. They're too far out right now. Keep tracking, we'll bag 'em." Hunter One replied. "Understood, Hunter One." "Better relay this to the big boat." One crewmember chimed in. "Already on it." The senior radar office said. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CIC, USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) Arabian Sea, Enroute to Sea of Aden "Sir, BarCAP group one picked up multiple aircraft approaching. They're presently about 300 miles out, but they're closing hard and fast." The CAG reported. "Right. Beef up the patrols. Start putting the rest of our fighters in the air. Fill up those formations. Have the fleet go to battle stations, and have our anti-missile systems up and tracking. If they get into our SAM range, smoke 'em." Nick said simply. "Aye, sir." The CAG replied. The Kitty Hawk began to launch its remaining fighters to augment their already established patrols, to provide a show of force while the fleet pushed onwards to the Sea of Aden. Over the Arabian Sea Without warning, three more contacts appeared by the group of what was now obviously Tu-22s. By the speed of the three new contacts they were AS-4 Kitchen anti ship missiles. Their altitude made the missiles extremely difficult to track, but it appeared as if they were headed towards the Kitty Hawk and the Halsey. Five more contacts appeared from the north, these also were definatley Anti ship missiles, headed at every other ship in the group. Meanwhile, with their payloads away, the enemy aircraft turned away towards home. The US Fighters may engage the missiles and bombers this turn, the US Surface ships may engage the Missiles next turn. Order of Battle 5 Tu-16s: Launching one AS-6 each and turning away 3 Tu-22s: Launching one AS-4 each and turning away 5 AS-6 Missiles: 1 Headed at USS Fletcher, 1 Headed at USS John Rodgers, 1 headed at USS Towers, 1 headed at USS McClusky, 1 headed at USS Reuben James 3 AS-4 Missiles: 2 Headed at USS Kitty Hawk, 1 headed at USS Halsey |

F-14A Tomcat - Hunter One BarCAP Group 1, Over the Arabian Sea. "Oh shit. I got eight Vampires heading for the fleet." The RIO breathed. "Shit. Hunter Group. I want you to start locking up the vampires and hitting them. Vigilantes, be ready. AngelEye, let the big boat know." The pilot ordered, toggling over to his AIM-54 missiles. "What about the bombers?" One of the other pilots asked. "Fuck 'em. The missiles are our priorities." Hunter One replied. In seconds, his missile picked up its lock, and the tone began chiming in his headset. "Hunter One, Fox Three." He said. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ F/A-18A - Kestrel One BarCAP Group 1, Over the Arabian Sea "Kestrels, as soon as those Vampires get in range for your Sparrows, track your targets and let 'em fly." Commander Jack Pierce, Commanding Officer for VFA-137, ordered. "Yes, sir." One of the other pilots replied. Pierce reached over, arming the AIM-7Fs on his Hornet's fuselage. The ring indicating the Hornet's APG-65 radar's radius came up. He waited for the cruise missiles to close range before the tone came in his headset from the Sparrows. "Please God, let these missiles work this time." Pierce breathed, "Kestrel One, Fox One." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CIC, USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) Arabian Sea, En-route to Sea of Aden "Vampire! Vampire! Vampire!" The radar officer shouted. "Goddamnit." Nick breathed, "Get the anti-missile weapons online, now. If our fighters miss a single one, I want them batted out of the sky. Are our subs still in radio contact?" "Aye, sir. They're still reachable." "I want the Puffer to proceed ahead of the fleet to the Sea of Aden and sweep the area for hostile vessels. Have the Finback stick with us for now, but if the Puffer gets into trouble, I want the Finback backing them up." Nick ordered. "Aye, sir." The comms officer replied. "I want every ship with AA guns swatting those vampires down. We have two screens of aircraft, but I'm not riding on that. We're not getting sucker punched by a bunch of fucking ragheads like this." Nick ordered. OOB: USS Kitty Hawk - Proceeding on course to Red Sea, Weapons online, firing on any 'vampires' that breach BarCAP lines USS Halsey (CG-23) - Taking lead position to cover Kitty Hawk, on course, Weaps Hot, firing anti-missile weapons on any vampires that breach BarCAP lines USS Fletcher (DD-992) - Taking left flank position to cover Kitty Hawk, on course, Weaps Hot, firing anti-missile weapons on any vampires that breach BarCAP lines USS John Rodgers (DD-983) - Taking right flank position to cover Kitty Hawk, on course, Weaps Hot, firing anti-missile weapons on any vampires that breach BarCAP lines USS Towers (DDG-9) - Taking rear position to cover Kitty Hawk, on course, Weaps Hot, firing anti-missile weapons on any vampires that breach BarCAP lines USS McClusky (FFG-41) - Taking position between Halsey and Fletcher, on course, Weaps Hot, firing anti-missile weapons on any vampires that breach BarCAP lines USS Ruben James (FFG-57) - Taking position betwwen Halsey and John Rodgers, on course, Weaps Hot, firing anti-missile weapons on any vampires that breach BarCAP lines USS Puffer (SSN-652) - Diving and heading to Sea of Aden ahead of fleet to scout USS Finback (SSN-670) - Positioned with battlegroup, on course, GQ BarCAP 1 & 2- 8 F-14As (M61, x2 AIM-9M, x2 AIM-7F, x4 AIM-54), 7 F/A-18As (M61, x2 AIM-9, x2 AGM-84As, x2 AIM-7Fs) 1 E-2C - Engaging 'vampires' BarCAP 3 & 4 - 8 F-4Ss (SUU-23, x4 AIM-9M, x4 AIM-7F), 7 A-6Es (x4 AGM-84As), 1 E-2C - Engaging 'vampires' |

The Anti ship missiles screamed in towards thier respective targets, 3 being brought down by fighters, 3 by SAMs launched from the ships, and 2 by Phalanx fire. The final missile, an AS-4 fired at the Kitty Hawk got lost in a cloud of chaff and exploded prematurely, spewing shrapnel and fire across the rear of the Kitty Hawk's deck. The damage was superficial. A few deck crew were lightly injured, and several aircraft were peppered by shrapnel. However, no aircraft were destroyed, and the fires failed to spread. The enemy aircraft continued to flee towards home. Several F-14s were still in range to attack the Tu-16s, but the Tu-22s were just out of range. Order of Battle 5 Tu-16s: Fleeing, still in range of Phoenix Missiles 3 Tu-22s: Still fleeing, just out of range, F-14s can catch up in 2 turns |

CIC, USS Kitty Hawk En-Route to Sea of Aden "Jesus Christ that was too close." Nick breathed, "Damage?" "Some of our Prowlers and Sea Sprites below decks are damaged. Minor fires, but they're contained and being put out. Minor injuries, they'll live. We're just skinned, sir." Damage Control replied. "Good. Right, let's keep going. And have our fighters down those Hadji motherfuckers. I'm not putting up with that suckerpunch shit." Nick growled. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ F-14A Tomcat - Hunter One Over the Arabian Sea "Screw this shit. Hunters, bag those bombers. The rest of us will seperate and engage the ones further out." The pilot ordered. "Aye, sir." And with that, 4 of the Tomcats unleashed another volley of AIM-54s at the Tu-16s, while the other 4 pursued the Tu-22s as fast as they could. |

Over the Arabian Sea The Tu-16 Formation was ravaged by the salvo of Phoenix Missiles, leaving only a single Badger airborne, that luckily dropped a cloud of Chaff, sending an inbound Phoenix off target. The Tu-22 formation dropped chaff as well and lowered altitude to only 500 feet making tracking them nearly impossible to track on Radar. Order of Battle 1 Tu-16: Still fleeing 3 Tu-22s: Still fleeing, dropped Chaff, F-14s can catch up in one turn though tracking is extremely difficult |

F-14A - Hunter One Over the Arabian Sea "...shit! I'm losing track of these fucks!" The RIO shouted. "Damnit. Right, let's tag that "Badger" and go home." The pilot said, coming around and locking an AIM-54 on it. "Hunter Two, follow my lead. Everyone else, disengage to BarCAP positions." "Roger that." "Hunter One, Fox Three." "Hunter Two, Fox Three." The two AIM-54s dropped off of the bodies of the Tomcats, and began rocketing towards their target, the remaining Tu-16. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CIC, USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) En-Route to the Sea of Aden "The bombers are retreating, sir." One of the ops officers said. "Right. Send my congratulations to our pilots and to our ships. Let's continue onwards." Nick said. The Kitty Hawk Battlegroup continued onwards, while the BarCAPs remained up for now. |

The last Tu-16 was blown apart by an AIM-54 ridding the skies of any enemy aircraft. While the aircraft were identified as soviet built, thier operators still remain unknown, but with the skies clear for the moment, the Crews of the Kittyhawk Battlegroup had some time to relax as much as they could. (OOC: Tag when ready for next post) |

Sea of Aden, en-route to the Red Sea Captain's Quarters, USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) May 13th, 1984 1045 hours, local Nick Tyler looked over the report that had just arrived from the fleet. They had just met up with the USS Puffer, who reported negative contacts. He was pleased that Yemen had stayed out of the fight, and so far, the Saudis werent causing problems. The report he sent to HQ was clear enough that the Iraqis or Iranians were involved on the attack made on the Kitty Hawk. If not directly, they were allowing Soviet bombers to operate from their areas. But, while they had lost bombers up the ass, all the Kitty Hawk got was some peppered Hawkeyes and Prowlers, a couple injured sailors that would recover quickly, and the need for some paint touchup. But so far, the reports were all saying the same thing. The Suez Canal was not going to be an easy pass. But Nick figured that they would wait and see for now, and just continue on their way. |

Red Sea, en-route to the Suez Canal Captain's Quarters, USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) May 15th 0842 Hours, Local Nick shook his head in dismay. He really didnt like this situation. If the Soviets picked the right time, hitting the Kitty Hawk would be like shooting fish in a barrel. Hopefuly, the Egyptians would stay the hell out of this, or it would take easily a week to bomb the shit out of everything up the Suez just to get moving. "Larry, what did you have in mind?" Nick asked his CAG, Captain Larry Foulke. "Well, I think a three-phase operation will work from the air. Phase 1, Operation Gelnikos, will proceed to the opening of the Suez to secure it from all air and ground assets so that we can make our entry. Phase 2, Operation Round Hammer, will secure our flank from enemy forces attempting to box us in. Phase 3, Operation Costner, will provide direct support over the fleet." Larry replied. "Interesting plan. I'll be sending one of our subs ahead to gauge the enemy, and we'll have one to keep an eye out for any hostile subs as well. As for the fleet, we'll just have to space ourselves out to keep it together." Nick nodded, "Okay, Larry. Get this in place." "Aye, sir." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 Hours Later Operation Gelnikos 15,000ft over Red Sea, en-route to Suez Canal F-14A "Hunter One" Captain Larry Foulke looked around. It was all tan and blue to him, but he had to be alert. The Soviets would never pass up the chanse to take out a carrier battlegroup. Especially in the turkey shoot this was going to be. Operation Gelnikos OOB: 12/12 F-14A Tomcats - Searching For Air Targets (M61A1, x2 AIM-9Ms, x2 AIM-7Fs, x4 AIM-54Cs) 6/6 A-6E Intruders - Approaching behind Tomcats (x2 AGM-123As, x6 Mk. 83s) 2/2 E-2C Hawkeyes - Scanning for Hostile Threats USS Puffer - Passively searching for hostile vessels near the Suez --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Operation Round Hammer 10,000ft over Red Sea, heading away from Kitty Hawk BG F/A-18A "Kestrel One" Commander Jack Pierce let out a sigh to himself. There was not a whole lot to see from up here, but it was also perfect hunting country. He knew this would be a hard approach for the Iranians, assuming the Saudis didnt stop them first. But there was nothing stoping the Soviets, and that's what his main consern was. Operation Round Hammer OOB: 12/12 F/A-18A Hornets - Searching for enemy targets (M61A1, x2 AIM-9Ms, x6 AIM-7Fs, x2 AGM-84As, x1 500 gal drop-tank) 6/6 A-6E Intruders - Approaching behind Hornets (4 AGM-84As) 1/1 E-2C Hawkeye - Scanning for hostile threats USS Finback - Watching for enemy submarine threats appraching -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Operation Costner 10,000ft over Red Sea, over Kitty Hawk BG The Kitty Hawk Battlegroup was full of activity. The threat of an attack loomed over everyone like a bad stormcloud. The fleet knew they had to push forward, but they knew that the Soviets would not make this an easier for them. Operation Costner OOB: 12/12 F-4S Phantoms - BarCAP - (SUU-23, x4 AIM-9Ms, x4 AIM-7Fs) 6/6 EA-6B Prowlers - BarCAP, ready to provide Electronics Support (x3 ALQ-99 TJS, x2 AIM-9Ms) 2/2 E-2C Hawkeyes - Watching for enemy threats 8/8 SH-2 Seasprites - On stanby for launch - (2 Mk. 46s) 8/8 SH-3 Sea Kings - On stanby for launch - 4(2 Mk. 46s) 4(Sonabouys) USS Kitty Hawk - Proceeding on course, Weapons online USS Halsey (CG-23) - Taking lead position to cover Kitty Hawk, on course, Weaps Hot USS Fletcher (DD-992) - Taking left flank position to cover Kitty Hawk, on course, Weaps Hot USS John Rodgers (DD-983) - Taking right flank position to cover Kitty Hawk, on course, Weaps Hot USS Towers (DDG-9) - Taking rear position to cover Kitty Hawk, on course, Weaps Hot USS McClusky (FFG-41) - Taking position between Towers and Fletcher, on course, Weaps Hot USS Ruben James (FFG-57) - Taking position betwwen Towers and John Rodgers, on course, Weaps Hot |
