The smell of sweet Georgian tobacco wafted through the air like a freshly cut onion or the smell of your hand while you wash it in Appalachian swamp water. A cough rang out from the recliner across the desk, staring at this man with a hammer and sickle pin and a smiley face directly below it. Commander Jakob T. Branch was sitting in his makeshift home office. The Cigar was a gift from his wife. Well. Currently ex wife. Branch stood at 5 feet 9 inches, his once muscular build had turned on him like a Alabama black snake. He currently weighed in at 275 pounds, however, on his record always said just under 210. Benefits of being an officer, easily pushing things around without others noticing.

The perpetrator of the cough was a one Captain Lucius Gearhart. Gearhart was the commander of the USS Parche. A Spec-Ops sub. A 3 year vet, Gearhart did not cough out of lungs filled of smoke, instead, it was a cough to get the attention of the currently plain clothed Commander in front of him to tell him that the orders came back in. Branch gave a look of questioning toward Gearhart. What? He's a superior. Should've snapped the whip.

"Commander Branch I assume?" Gearheart questioned with what seemed to be the bluntest sharp object in the drawer. Fingernails on a chalkboard made men harder.
"Guilty as charged" Branch sat up and put his cigar down "What can I do you for?" his fake Boston brough was something that would piss even the most senior officer off.
"You've received orders to escort my men and the Parche to enemy waters" Gearhart almost had to spit out the words as they came across his lips. Incompetent swine of a commander
"Sweet. And to what honor do I owe your presence in Casa de Branch?"
"I was wondering if we could plan a course of action"
"Sure sure. Yes. Let me go fetch the refreshments" Branch muttered with a smile and hurried off to the kitchen.

Gearhart looked around the room at the pictures, souvenirs, and signed legislation. He saw glimmers of a genius here. Graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland, a degree in Acoustical oceanography. Gearhart stood and walked over to a peculiar part of metal on the wall it was only about a foot long, and had been bronzed. He was running his fingers against it to get the texture

"Now now. Don't fondle my Red missile cone." Branch returned to the room holding a bottle of Jose Cuervo Gold and two cans of Tecate. Mexican piss water beer.
"Excuse me?"
"That's a piece of a Russian missile cone we picked up in the Halibut back in 72'."
"You don't say?"
"No. I don't. It doesn't exist. You wanted to talk. So come sit down. Talk." Branch pulled the cap out of the Cuervo and pried the top off of his Tecate. "What are your ideas on the op?"
Gearhart took this as a surprise on every front. In fact, the Captain received this not but two and a half hours ago.
"I'm sorry commander..."
"Master and Commander Branch." Branch shot the Captain a look with a smirk before taking a swig "You either call me Jake. Or you call me Master and Commander."
"That's not your rank Commande..."
"Neither is Captain yours Colonel. We play our pay grades. That's how it is. So. We can play these games all night, I have no woman to distract me this time around"
Gearhart grimaced. He knew the Narwhal's skipper was a nut. He had heard the stories of Branch's dives to the deep, nearing crush depth at a 3 degree dive, bouncing off of the thermal layer, and blowing the ballast on the way into port. He didn't think he could be THIS incompetent.
"Jake. This mission is important." Gearhart finally approached with a calmed voice as if speaking to a child "We will be placing taps..."
Branch looked up before giving a constipated grunt while taking a shot of cuervo "Ahhh. That kind of important. Alright. Here's what we'll do" Branch slid all of the papers off of his desk to reveal a map with a course plotted. "We're going to try something crazy. I'm calling it the 'Hail Bloody Mary' play. We'll leave New London, heading east toward Gibraltar, We'll round the Azores, on a route taking us on the heading toward Cork in Ireland. We'll slide onto another heading, aiming us toward the Isle of man, slide between England and the Isle of man, then between Dongahee and Stranhaer. We'll basically use the English islands as a cover. We'll hook a full turn into Faroe, and move up along the coast from there. When we get to Kola, we'll hit the major sub bases first and work on the minors. Narwahl will take up cover, make sure to divert all attention away from you at the bottom of the sea, I assume you'll be using divers?"
"Well, yes"
"Alright, so we'll make some noise, keep the tension off of you and mission accomplished. Then you go home, get your presidential unit citation and we'll go do all the hard work. Agreed?"
"Well..."
"Good. Let's drink to it"
"I, uh, don't drink"
Branch's eyes stared at this man in front of him, the man practically gone. He sighed while shaking his head.
"We are definately not going to have the best of relationships..."
