NAME: Torin Lamarc
This is his true birth name, and thus he sees no good reason to use it.

A.K.A.: The Ardo Snake
This name was bestowed upon him several years ago by some sensationalists and gossipers in Midtown. It carries little meaning outside the area.

AGE: 22

ATTIRE
Torin changes attire as frequently as he changes identities. When not in public, Torin usually hides inside a hooded robe of cheap brown cloth; one could find another like it almost anywhere.

APPEARANCE
Torin’s appearance is trivial, as he can - and does - so easily change it. In reality, he is approximately 5’10” with a moderately lean build and gray eyes. His hair is naturally white, which is convenient for instances where he needs to change the color. His natural skin and complexion are rather pale, and his appearance is - in a word - cold.

PERSONALITY

Torin is a mimic by nature. He has the ability to act and speak as almost any kind of person he has ever met or observed closely. Almost all his emotions are fraudulent. His own personality seems next to non-existent; no detectable emotional reactions, no strong moral or ethical convictions, just a few threads of cold, mechanical logic buried deep within a restless mindset. Even in chaotic situations, Torin feels no genuine joy or excitement. To him, bedlam is simply comforting: the way of all things.

Torin has occasionally infiltrated establishments controlled by particular factions - or unaffiliated small businesses - pose several weeks or months as an employee or legitimate member, then make his escape. No particular M.O. has ever been established in his actions in this regard; he may make off with valuables and materials from his victims, frame them for minor crimes they did not commit, even assault them… or he may do nothing at all. There simply is no pattern.

FACTION: unaffiliated, as yet

HISTORY

Age 4 - Torin’s father, in a drunken rage, beats his mother to death with his bare hands. Torin observes it all while hiding in the small closet of their two-room tenement, located in an impoverished neighborhood in the Farthest Quarter. His father, unaware of what Torin has actually seen, tells him his mother had a bad accident of some sort. They flee the scene together.

Age 6 - After over a year on the lam, Torin’s father is able to get a job working for a carpenter in a district many miles away. Torin must accompany him to his place of work, as there is no other place to keep him or person to look after him. He frequently sneaks out of the workshop and wanders the district on his own, taking advantage of the convenient alleys and rooftops and occasionally pinching a local merchant for small goods. Several weeks into the job, his father robs his employer’s home and is able to plant enough evidence to pin the heist on another employee, who is sent to jail in his place. Torin learns that he is, at best, second in importance to his father, and that lying to protect oneself from consequence is okay.

Age 9 - While fleeing across the rooftops of yet another district of the city-continent - from a group of professional criminals he pinched - Torin’s father misses a particularly wide jump. He tells Torin to grab his arms and pull him up; but Torin instead grabs his father and flings him off the edge, to his death. After successfully eluding the men, Torin dyes his hair black, cuts it short, and works his way east.

Age 12 - After years of successful getaways, Torin is first approached by a Magister, who asks him some questions about one of his petty larcenies. He makes up a completely fictional story, telling one lie fter another. The Walker is satisfied with his answers and lets him go. Torin no longer fears any consequence of his lies. As he picks up the mannerisms of the more successful artisans and traders in the Quarter, Torin begins to move himself north toward Midtown…

(more to come)

SKILLS

Pathological Liar - Torin has an uncanny ability to lie; to him, the truth can be almost anything he chooses. He has no physical reaction to dishonest behavior and rarely gets caught in a lie that he can’t weasel his way out of. Torin can lie to most anyone - even members of the church - without detection. He cannot, however resist the truth-detecting Words used by the Conciliators or other high-ranking judges.

Masquerade - Since childhood, Torin has experimented extensively with the use of dyes, pigments, and adhesives to alter his appearance. He has extended this ability to the use of cloth and articles of clothing, and is able to manufacture new identities for himself even with very little preparation time. When coupled with his ability to lie without shame, Torin becomes capable of assuming unique identities that can fool entire communities of people… at least long enough to get what he wants and/or cause some trouble, then make his escape.

Mimic - When he closely observes a skill or ability of someone else's, Torin becomes capable of emulating it. He does not quite learn the skills this way, but as long as he has a model to go off of, he can at least fake them convincingly enough to fool others into thinking he is genuine. He has used this ability many times to convince employers of all types that he is capable of doing things he really can't do, such as smithing or being a librarian. In reality, he is simply copying the actions and mannerisms of his boss or coworkers. He also uses it to blend seemlessly into crowds and groups of all kinds; in this way, he has eluded many a pursuer.
