![]() How the hell do we not have a thread for this game yet. Because. Hell. YES. This is the bastard lovechild of Monster Hunter, Skyrim, Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls, AND it's directed by the guy behind Devil May Cry 4. Despite Capcom's recent discrepencies, this one looks like it can do no wrong. A character creator with more depth than Skyrim's: Think Monster Hunter's, but ten times better. The standards: Many facial -- overall shape, as well as specifics like nose, mouth, eyes, overall shape, ears etc -- options, as well as body type etc. SIX voices per gender. Universal hair styles (the same ones for each gender). Sliders to change your stance between Ladylike and Macho. Sliders to change your height and build heaviness. I'm not talking the simple stuff where the extremes are only a couple inches apart; you can make anything between a 3ft Hobbit and an 8ft tall monstrosity, more or less. There are many character classes. I haven't read all of them, but there's at least four rogue-types, pure mages, battle mages, three types of warrior, etc etc. And all this character creation stuff? You do it multiple times! From what I hear, at least twice; you make your character, and then you make your main Pawn -- your companion, your sidekick, just like Felynes in MH is the best I can describe. Just FAR better. They talk. They're actually smart. If you send your pawn off with another player, and they happen to slay, say, a chimera, before you do, what do they do? They will offer to step up and help you. Show you how it's done. Take the lead. I read in one impression of the demo that the player ran out of lantern oil after sunset at the fringe of a forest. Dark is dark. Their lights went out and they couldn't see a thing. Blackness. The only illumination was their mage pawn casting spells at attacking wolves. The creature designs are spectacular. Look up the games's hydra cockatrice, griffin, chimera, for example. It's an open-world roamer like Skyrim, with a day and night cycle, strategy like Demon's Souls and Hunting and Gameplay similar to Monster Hunter. You can climb the monsters as in Shadow of the Colossus. Common in the demo is players climbing onto the back of the chimera and cutting off the tail; the snake head. Destroy the lion head and it acts more like a goat. --------- Enough hyped rambling from me, in this opening post anyway. I, personally, am shocked this gem has stayed relatively undetected on my radar up until so close to release day (22nd). I remember that Vaan showed us screenshots a long time ago. By the Divines, this is not one to miss! This is my most anticipated game of first-half 2012 and I hope others here look it up too. As usual, google is your friend for screens and trailers. I've never actually watched a trailer of it myself. |

To be honest, I can't remember what I was going to post here because I forgot the article I read days ago I wanted to quote. But, I remember this: The main story is quoted at 70 hours long, with a further 300 hours of sidequesting to be done. That is freaking longer than Skyrim. I mean, by the Nine, if this game was a person I WOULD LICK ITS FACE. Initial scores coming in are ranking the game highly, 85% and higher.
Just going to bold that part right there. Soak it in. Hell. Yes. Oh my god! Time cycle! A city with two hundred NPCs living within! EVERY SINGLE ONE UNIQUE. FULLY VOICED. By the way, the director also did Resi 4. To summarise: FRICKIN' BUY IT OH MY GOD. |

Spoiler: click to toggle The top one is just a random screenshot of the player and some pawns, showing the character creator's potential. All the others are from the new Ur-Dragon trailer/event. Ur-Dragon, as I understand it, is a massively powerful boss that requires either several players working together to defeat, or many visits by a single player. There'll be online rankings and basically a list of players who've killed the beast. All I can say from the screens (can't watch vids atm) is... Dat lighting. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nxlBqEeTtc +100000000. I've been following the Dragon's Dogma thread on NeoGAF, and I've learned a lot since I started doing it. Some of the more noteworthy things: - You only get one save slot. Only one character, ever, unless you delete previous ones. Otherwise, you have to either backup and delete your other file/s, or make another profile and play in that. - Dark is dark. Dangerous is dangerous; I've seen a few videos so far, and the game is way, way more like Monster Hunter than any of the previews/reviews say -- I'm guessing those pre/reviewers have never played MH, but DD is damn well like a HD Monster Hunter, with extra features and an open world. - Gameplay is affected by your character's (and pawn's) height, weight, build, etc. For example, a smaller character can fit into crawlspaces big ones can't, whilst bigger ones have advantages of their own. Smaller characters are lighter and faster, whilst bigger ones are slower but can equip and carry more. - Characters wear their lanterns on their belts. One example given was that a player had a somewhat short character, and a taller pawn. When they waded into a stream, the water extinguished their lamp, but their pawn was tall enough that the lamp stayed above water level and didn't go out. - It's been revealed that the game has an in-game screenshot function. You CAN TAKE PHOTOS. After that, they must get saved to the hard drive, because not only can you upload them to Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr/your social network of choice, you can also export them via USB drive. Also, I've edited the thread title; this is now also the thread for in-game screenshots. Unfortunately, the way this is going, I'll be doing most of the screencap dumping. Lol. ^ You should. Hey, who's played the demo? You guys should post your impressions! x3 Edit: Also, I was monitoring the NeoGAF thread, and two people mentioned hearing something massive moving around in the Witchwood. It was night, so pitch black; they could hear it, but nothing ever attacked them. Just the footsteps... The Witchwood is a dark and dangerous forest, from what I gather, and kind of similar to Middle-Earth's Fangorn. Edited by Seffoo, 25 May 2012, 04:54 AM.

Not sure why I haven't posted this earlier, but for those of you who don't know, I did get Dragon's Dogma. Quite a few days ago, actually. I've been playing for a good 48 hours now, and I got to say, it's such a wonderful game <333 I can't say I have any problems with it so far, besides the save system. (though I have gotten more used to it.) The world is gorgeous. fun to explore, and also rather terrifying. You never know what will come running out at you, or when a griffin will come landing right on top of you, bringing your life down to nearly 5% x3 Just yesterday I had an epic battle with a Cyclops, and after I threw him down (literally -he went flying over a cliff side Lol.), I went down to him and a Chimera came running out of nowhere, so I had an epic battle with that. after finally defeating it, the sun was setting, so I ran through the woods to find a safe place before dark. but as soon as I got out in the opening, a Griffin landed right on top of me, scaring the shit out of me. and so I had an even longer, epic battle with that. That was the first and only Griffin I have killed so far. Luckily by the time I finished the battle, I was close to the capital city, so I made it safetly xD (while having to dodge a few bandits in the process.) So yeah, it gets pretty intense sometimes. It's great :3 My Arisen is of course Drake, and his vocation is Assassin, which I absolutely love. and my Main Pawn is Crysia, a Mage. Both are at level 36 now. (The original Drake isn't exactly an assassin, and Crysia isn't a mage, but they work for this game. xD)
I went there yesterday for the first time. It does have that majestic, and yet spooky vibe to it like Fangorn. To my disappointment though, it's nowhere near as big, it's actually a very small wood. and not easy to get lost in. :( But besides it's size I love the place. I haven't heard those footsteps yet... I think I'm gonna go back there again at night soon and see if I can hear them. Anyway, time for some screenshots. Here's Drake. I was quite surprised and pleased at how accurate I was able to make him. :3 (besides the hair.. not exactly his, but it still works. close enough.): Spoiler: click to toggle And here's Crysia. Which she turned out pretty darn accurate as well: Spoiler: click to toggle And here's a few nice shots of a Griffin battle: Spoiler: click to toggle Expect more screenshots from me in the near future. /SHOT I really love the screenshot feature. More games should have it! Edit: I also thought I might add, this game is really selling good. I went to the first Gamestop in town, they were all out. and I went to this store called Hastings I go to often for games, all out there too. My parents wanted to go to walmart, so I decided to check there too -though I didn't expect they would have it in. Nope. Then I finally went to the other gamestop.. they had ONE copy left. Just one. (besides a used copy for xbox 360) and I got it. So yeah, if you guys are going out to get it soon, I wish you luck finding a copy. Edited by Drake, 17 Jun 2012, 12:22 PM.

What are the saving issues? Someone told me it's autosave and you can't turn it off. Is it the usual autosave fuckery or is there something kinda specific to this game? |

^Yes it is the autosave, and it can't be turned off. What's more annoying is that it does have a manual save, BUT it's not a separate file from the autosave, so when you go to another area after a loading screen, or when a quest is updated and such, the autosave saves over that. The only separate save is a checkpoint autosave, which saves when you enter the rift or sleep at an inn. (which you can choose to load either by the save/quit option in the pause menu, or if you die.) So entering the rift or sleeping is a good idea before you do any journeying/questing or anything big, since that's the only way to go back if you make any mistakes and it autosaves. but once you enter the rift or sleep again, that's it, it saves over that last checkpoint and there's no going back. So you have to be careful. |

^ ^^ As frustrating as it sounds, especially in the low low chance of a corruption, it sounds like it actually challenges the player; it's too easy these days to simply say "Oh, if I die, I'll just do a quick load and pop right back where I was ten seconds earlier!". Hell, I do it in Skyrim; I recently saved right before a boss fight in a barrow, because I figured there was a boss beyond the doors and sent my Daedra in there to scout the things out. Volkihar Master Vampire. I saved and then proceeded to get ripped up twice in a row. Both times, just a quick (by Skyrim's standards..) load and poof, I'm back at the door. The point being, Dragon's Dogma reintroduces challenge and fear of death back into a genre that should put so much emphasis on it but has caused it to lose meaning in recent years. Sure, it annoys me that there's only one save slot, and it saves over automatically, but it stops people exploiting the pawn system and it doesn't bother me personally to any degree great enough to complain about. @ Drake's long post above; The likenesses of your Arisen and Pawn are excellent; I can very much see the characters in them, and as I said earlier today, they actually look like fantasy heroes. Can't help remarking on how fantastic the character models in the game are, especially with such massive customization options. The griffin is... big. Have you tried setting fire to its wings yet? From what you've mentioned so far, the game sounds exactly as I imagined it to be, and I certainly have no qualms with that. The screenshot function is definitely one of the game's biggest nonessential virtues though; more games should have it, yes, if not most or all of them. It would save console users the stupid method of cam photos. There are PVRs and dedicated gaming recorders for videos. Have there been many surprising moments thus far, battle or otherwise? How's the gathering, crafting, etc? Honestly, I thought I would be the first one on this forum to get Dragon's Dogma, being the one most hyped for it; I'm actually surprised how quickly you got it. xD I'm 99% sure I'm about to drop my XIII-2 layby in the name of DD, but that would mean losing $50 I've sunk into keeping the order secure. |
