I generally don't follow the Olympics since sports don't particularly interest me, but I figure it'd be nice to have a place to discuss it. It's not all about sports, anyway. That said, I'm cheering for Michael Phelps since he's from my town and I went to the same pool as him as a child.

I don't know who else watched the opening ceremony, but it was awesome. I think London did an amazing job. I was in awe. It was a real tribute to history and culture. I loved the transition from idyllic Medieval maypole festival to the industrial revolution. I might not be British, but much of my family has its roots in England, so I felt a certain pride as well. The Queen looked delighted to be there x3

I love the Olympics as this incredible tradition of good-natured competition between the nations of the world. It's a shame how politics tend to seep in, but generally they do a pretty good job keeping it above politics. There are so many conflicts in the world right now (and always), and yet there is North Korea, there is Iran, there is Syria, among others. The more I think about it, the more I admire it.
The first Olympics to be televised was the 1936 Olympics which was held in Nazi Berlin. Hitler himself opened the games. It was meant to be a display of Aryan supremacy, but even the Nazis couldn't stop gold medals being awarded to a black athlete and a jewish athlete. Hitler probably had a rant.

So, with all that said, I had a big problem with NBC's coverage in America. Throughout the whole damn thing, we had to have these dumbass commentators (who couldn't even pronounce some of the country names correctly) talking through the whole damn thing like it was a football game. I mean, some of the trivia is interesting and I like hearing it, but they said a lot more than interesting trivia. It was more along the lines of what I would expect from a radio broadcast.
They also cut the Abide With Me segment. Fortunately, the internet let me watch it and it was wonderful. But I had no idea about it until this morning, as NBC instead used that time to show us an inane Ryan Seacrest interview with Michael Phelps.
Also, NBC butchered the Parade of Nations. They had commercials every 20 seconds, and they just flipped through the countries that were missed very quickly. Couldn't get a good look at their costumes or anything. To be fair, the commercials had to air (though I feel like they might have been able to make an exception?) and the parade was apparently going a lot faster than anticipated.
However, that does not excuse that they didn't even show a second of Uruguay, since they come right after the United States. Instead, they just stayed on the US even as Uruguay came and went. They apparently also skipped Armenia, although I didn't notice.

So anyway, anybody else watch the opening ceremony?
