Government & Politics

The United Kingdom of Great Volyn is an autocratic state, under the Crown of Kiev. An aristocratic legislature exists, but serves in an advising role to the monarch who makes all final decisions. The official executive of the state is the monarch. Should the appointed monarch be unable or unwilling to take the throne, a regent will be appointed by the Council of Lords. Should a regent family rule for more than three generations without a monarch of the named dynasty taking the throne, the regent family will be recognized as the new royal dynasty. An advisory council to the head of state comprised of nobles throughout the Kingdom. At current time, there are 602 noble families, of 2,196 in the Kingdom, represented on the Council. To gain representation, a family must send a representative, and they must be received by the King and the Council. A representative may leave at any time. Judicial power is controlled through a series of Courts, at the head of which is the Supreme Royal Court. The Supreme Court has no more than 3 judges, though it may have less, and judges are chosen by the King for a life term. At the current time there is a single judge on the Supreme Royal Court.

Government type: Autocratic Monarchy (Prince Regent Pyotr Hygheiz of Minsk)

Brief Political Overview of the United Kingdom

The Kassovar monarchy is most popular among ethnic Volynic citizens, which dominate the country-side in the areas of L'viv, Minsk, Homel, and Kiev, down to Odessa. This area, while undergoing industrialization, remains largely agrarian in nature. While peasant revolts are not unheard of, they are not long-lasting or true political movements, and are dealt with with relative ease. However, the Catholic Kassovars are often at odds with the Orthodox population. Fascism is a popular phenomenon among some of the middle class in this region, and is expressed through republicanism and anti-clericalism.

On the Crimea, the population is almost cleanly split between Volynic citizens and the ethnic Tatar minority. The Tatars are permitted to practice the Islamic faith unmolested, but religious and ethnic conflict stifles development in the area, and the Crimea is largely underdeveloped.

The Polish are generally the largest supporters of the United Kingdom outside Volyn, as the Kassovar dynasty is the result of the personal union between the Polish queens and the Volynic kings, dating back to the 14th century. However, nationalist sentiment does exist, and is centered around the Warsaw region, near the Prussian border. This area is highly liberal and nationalistic, and is a constant source of political dissatisfaction. In Krakow, and further north, however, the Polish communities are integrated into the state. The shared Catholicism of the Kassovars with Poland does much to gain them support among the most fervent of church-goers. Of note is phenomenon on nationalist, communism which is popular in the working class regions of the highly industrialized Polish province.

The Lithuanian people, while dissatisfied with the union, have been made a minority in their own country, with Poles dominating the southern regions, and Volynic settlers having, over the past few centuries, largely intermarried and displaced the local people. The city of Riga has a large Volynic majority, and while Lithuanian nationalist sentiment is a problem, it is rendered irrelevant due the dispersion of the Lithuanian people. Lithuania is worth noting for the large population of Volynian Catholics, and some of the greatest supporters of the Kassovar dynasty, and the home of the liberal Volynian intellectual movement, based in Riga. Communist sympathies are also common among poor Volynian-Lithuanians.

The areas of Slovak majority around Bratislava are of a huge concern to domestic politics. Fascistic, nationalistic, and communistic sentiment is widely popular, and the monarchy is widely hated. Polish populations moving in from the north are also widely resented, and Polish settlers in the region are a frequent target, leading to a great deal of support for the United Kingdom and the monarchy among Poles of this region. There is no recognizable Volynic population in this area, leading to feelings of imperialism by the native groups.

Hungary, the area around Pest, is very similar to Slovakia, in terms of political concerns. Here it is Romanians that threaten to push the Hungarians from their lands, rather than the Poles, but unlike in Slovakia, the Romanians here remain equally resentful of Volynic mastery. Due to much ethnic infighting, political activity in this region is stunted. Budapest, however, remains a cosmopolitan provincial capital, highly industrious, and has a notable Jewish and Volynic minority in the region that strengthens hold of the government over the city proper.

The rest of the Romanian territories are characterized by a benign neglect by the government, which only sees to their defense, and collection of taxes. The Provincial governments are largely autonomous, with exception to the highly industrialized areas east of the Prut river, which has seen extensive Volynic settlement. Nationalist sentiment is high, but a shared Orthodox faith unites the populations in the mixed areas, though helps enflame anger against the Catholic monarchy. To the north, Polish settlers have begun displacing some Romanian communities.
