Population: 108,550,000 (1939 est.) Religion: Roman Catholic official state religion and majority religion; Judaism outlawed; Islam tightly regulated but allowed. Government type: Autocratic monarchy (King Maximilian II) Capital: Zaragoza Administrative divisions: 15 regions, assembled under the Crown of Aragon. All 14 other regions bound to the Kingdom of Aragon by constitutional law. Independence: 1833 (Infante Carlos claims throne of Spain), 1836 (Kingdom of Eastern Iberia with Carlos V), 1856(Crown of Aragon re-established by Carlos VI) Legislature: Bicameral Corts Generals (General Courts, essentially small parliaments) enacting royal degrees in each region of the nation. Timeline of notable events: 1035 - Kingdom of Aragon is "born". 1137 - Kingdom of Aragon and the County of Barcelona merge through marriage. 1381 - Crown of Aragon at it's largest. 1469 - Aragon and Castille enter dynastic union. 1516 - All of Iberia (With exception of Portugal) united under Spanish rule. 1716 - Crown of Aragon and it's institutions abolished by the Nueva Planta decrees. 1833 - The Carlist War begin, with Infante Carlos, Count of Molina claiming the throne of Spain. 1834 - The Carlist War bogs down, splitting the Spanish Iberian holdings into two. 1835 - Infante Carlos decides it is best to come to an agreement with Isabella II and forms the independent Kingdom of Eastern Iberia. Carlos is crowned Carlos V. 1845 - Kingdom of Eastern Iberia goes on the war path, adding to the crown the realms of Majorca, Corsica and Sardinia. 1856 - Carlos V dies, his son is crowned Carlos VI. The new king decides to divide the kingdom into traditional regions and re-establishes the Crown of Aragon. 1858 - While Spanish hold on the Americas crumbles, the Crown of Aragon seizes the opportunity and launches an invasion. 1860 - Carlos VI dies, his brother taking the throne as Juan III. 1862 - The long war against Spain ends with the treaty of Gibraltar. Spain relinquishes any claims on Aragon; cedes Spanish Morocco, Gibraltar and Granada. Aragon gains colonial possession of Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and Cuba. 1863 - Crown of Aragon aids the CSA in its struggle against USA. 1865 - Aragon begins talks with CSA about handing Cuba over to CSA. The change in power is already ongoing when CSA surrenders, leaving Cuba in a limbo. A delegation by Cuban authorities approaches Juan III, who grants them their wish; independence. 1868 - Juan III abdicates in favour of his traditionalist son, who is crowned Carlos VII. 1880 - Carlos VII launches invasion of northern Africa, seizing further important territories from the former Barbary states. Western entrance into the Mediterranean is now under Aragonese control. 1909 - Carlos VII dies, leaving the prosperous Crown of Aragon to his son, who becomes Jaime III. Jaime III inherits Sicily from the dynastic union between his father and mother. He asserts immediate Aragonese hegemony over Sicily. 1910 - The brief conflict with Malta forces the small island nation into the Crown of Aragon and seals Aragonese domination over the western Mediterranean sea. 1912 - Kingdom of Naples attacks Sicily and Corsica, seeking to secure its own trade routes through Aragon-controlled waters. 1914 - The brutal naval conflict with Naples ends with Aragonese victory. Aragon launches massive landings on the Italian coastline from Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily. 1916 - Kingdom of Naples surrenders and is annexed into the Crown of Aragon. As a sign of good faith to the world, Jaime III orders the northernmost parts of Naples to be ceded to the rest of Italy and for the heavy guns in Gibraltar and Ceuta to be dismantled. 1929 - Jaime III dies tragically in an assassination by a Neapolitan veteran holding a grudge. His son ascends to the throne as Maximilian II. Maximilian II orders immediate modernization of the Aragonese navy. 1931 - Maximilian II meets a young woman on his state visit to USA. He will end up marrying the commoner woman in 1936, to the chagrin of the Aragonese elite. 1935 - Recent breakthroughs in technology prompt Maximilian II to order the modernization of the military. 1936 - Maximilian II orders the Principality of Biscay to be reformed as a Grand Duchy, at the same time giving it autonomous rights as the rightful home of the Basque people.
