![]() War flag of the Crown of Aragon Reial Força Armada d'Aragó The Royal Armed Forces of Aragon is the backbone of Aragonese rule over it's territories. It was formed officially in 1856, with the reformation of the Kingdom of Eastern Iberia and the reorganization of the Carlist militias into an organized military formation. The armed forces are split into five branches; Royal Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Royal Guards and Colonial Legions. It is worth noting that the Aragonese military bases itself highly on honourable combat ethics. The use of aircraft does not extend to unfair use against undefended ships, submarines are seen as having little combat value and so on. One of the most notable shows of the honourable Aragonese military came when with the rise of machine guns the death tolls grew huge; the military was forbidden from shooting enemy medics and wounded enemies were to be taken care of even in the worst situations. Generally the Royal Army (Real Exèrcit) is around 600,000 men strong, split into garrisons stationed in each of the King's realms. The army is a professional force during peacetime and regulates regional activities by enforcing Royal Decrees as well as keeping peace when local police are unable to do so. A strong majority of the army is stationed in Europe and the core of it's drafting capabilities lay there as well. Only 10,000 men of the army are stationed in the Caribbean. For wartime, there is a reserve of over two million men in Europe alone. These reserve are trained through conscription and are called back for training every two years for two months at a time until they turn 40 or are deemed physically unable to fulfil military duties. The reserves can be mobilized in a couple of days. The Colonial Legions (Legió d'Colònies) act as an active reserve for the army and is also the expeditionary force that will spearhead any Aragonese aggression. The Colonial Legions consist of volunteers (both foreign and Aragonese) and willing recruits from North Africa and the Caribbean. The 200,000 legionnaires are stationed in North Africa and the Caribbean possessions, but in case of trouble can be moved hastily to any site of civil unrest or to back up army formations in battles. The Royal Guards (Guàrdia Real) are the first and last line of defence for the royal family. It is an elite formation of 10,000 men, responsible for keeping the royal family safe at all times and guarding government buildings from threats. There are always Royal Guard formation standing watch at every royal villa, palace and mansion, even if the nearest royal family member were halfway across the globe. They always wear dress uniform, but despite this fact are always combat-able and ready to sacrifice themselves for the Crown. Much like some other famous royal guards, they are forbidden to show emotions while on guard duty. They always have the right to use lethal force against threats, but rare are the occasions that call for such force. ![]() Naval ensign of the Aragonese Royal Navy The Royal Navy (Marina Reial) is the most important branch of the Aragonese Armed Forces, because the Crown of Aragon is divided into several realms that aren't connected together by land. The only way to assure the survival of African and Caribbean possessions as well as ensuring the security of the European areas is to have a powerful navy. Although for a long time seeing French and Spanish fleets as the main rivals and something to overcome, the American resource-wealthy and militaristic nations have pushed the naval race into overdrive. With the navy needing to secure the Caribbean area as well as the Mediterranean at the same time from possible hostilities, Aragon required to have a large armada capable of being split into two while still being noteworthy naval elements in themselves. The navy maintained its position as the highest budgeted branch mainly due to the performance against the Kingdom of Naples, another significant naval power. The doctrines utilized by the Royal Navy matched and overcame Neapolitan forces time and time again and proved that with increased anti-aircraft guns, even aerial assaults could be thwarted. The Royal Marines (Real Infanteria de Marina) provide amphibious warfare capabilities to the armed forces. They evolved from naval infantry of previous centuries, tasked with providing security on warships and boarding vessels during confrontation and therefore are embedded into naval command hierarchy. If the Colonial Legions are the spearhead for Aragonese military operations, the marines are the ones responsible for clearing them a beachhead. The marines are roughly the same size as the Colonial Legions, standing at a slightly fluctuating size of 200,000. ![]() Roundel as used by the Royal Air Force The Royal Air Force (La Força Aèria Real) is the newest branch of the armed forces, established officially in 1921 from army aviation elements. It includes a fleet of zeppelins, fighter aircraft, transport aircraft, seaplanes and bombers. The Air Force also operates all the military airfields. Although not as prestigious or known in the realms as the other branches of armed service, the amount of personnel recruited into the air force annually are enough to keep the number of men in service at a constant 45,000 men. There are around 1,000 aircraft in service, most of them fighters. Edited by Azrael, Jun 9 2011, 07:57 AM.
