![]() Battle Standard of the Kingdom Prior to military reforms in the 1920s, the armed forces were deteriorating quickly. Linguistic, religious, and ethnic turmoil greatly hurt the operational capacity of the Royal Armed Forces, which were all but incapable of maintaining domestic stability, much less defense from an external foe. It was King Bodahn III who had the foresight to reform the military into dozens of distinct branches, and begin a modernization effort seen to completion by Prince Regent Pyotr Hygheiz. The military is decentralized, but still strictly organized. All branches of the Army, Air Force, and Navy answer to the Council of War, headed by the King himself. They oversee the regional generals, who operate relatively independently, in units determined by language, faith, and ethnicity. While all officers are required to read and write Volynic to fluency, regional officers are also chosen for their ability to speak the local language, and for reflecting local customs, and the bulk of officers are chosen from the component provinces of the Kingdom, and then educated in the language of government. The Navy is largely limited to Lithuanians and Volynians, and the Air Force is limited exclusively to Volynians for the time being, due to its limited size.
