Toronto Daily Star Today’s top headline: War games scheduled to start this Monday. Over 40000 men, 10000 guns, 2000 tanks and 800 aircraft are being assembled to take part in grand war games. Military brass are conducting these games with the hope of enhancing military doctrine and co-operation between the various branches. It is especially evident that co-operation and co-ordination needs to be developed between the army and air force. With modern military aircraft being able to carry large payloads it is necessary that information flow quickly and accurately from the men on the ground to the pilots, enabling fast and effective use of close air support. There will be no shots fired during this entire exercise as there are no enemies to shoot at. However it will provide soldiers with as close to real combat experience as possible. The exercise will also provide military brass and analysts with feedback necessary to develop new strategies.

Dearest Mother, My deepest apologies mother over my lack of correspondence of late. My Sergeant has been working us especially hard for the last few weeks, the boys barely have time to shave anymore. We wake early, before the roosters in fact, eat a hasty breakfast then march in full pack till noon. We rest for 20 minutes while eating a lunch, then march till after dark, eat a supper, clean our gear then go to bed. Every other day we do the obstacle courses in the morning, then target practice in the afternoon. I hate the obstacle courses; we have to do it in full pack as usual, an extra 20-30 kilos of gear. The worst part is the 100 metre long mud pit, or as some of the boys call it the boot stew. It is a pit full of thick sticky black mud that could swallow a person alive. I myself have lost three boots in there, and to make matters worse, my Sergeant will make you walk around the rest of the week with only one boot. Mother, I know I had told you that I would be coming home for a few weeks after my training was complete, sadly I was informed last week that this will not be the case. I had my graduation ceremony this afternoon, and tomorrow morning myself and my whole company will be departing for an assignment. Please dearest mother do not worry for me, I am not going to war, and I shall return to you when I am able. I hope father is doing well with the farm, I feel sorry that I left him to tend it alone. I hope his demeanor has changed towards me. I just wanted to make him proud of me. Maybe when I return he will see what kind of man I have become. Please, give a kiss to Joseph and Gabriella for me. I will try to write you again as soon as I can, till them mother please keep safe and take care. Yours truly and with deepest love, Timothy Edited by Drake, Mar 11 2011, 08:25 PM.

80km South Wast of Winnipeg - Open Terrain General Charles, commander of W Army aboard his armoured command car. General Charles was surveying the battle space from his Lanchester Armoured Car. He had been driving up and down the line all day inspecting his men and their fortification. It was also good for morale that soldiers see their commander. He saw in the distance his command bunker and had a moment of disappointment. He so despised these position, away from the fight, safe and hidden far from the fighting, it wasn’t like him to hide. When he entered the bunker one of his assistants accosted him. “General, General, I, umm, I have that report you wanted right here” The young man said as he tried to hand Charles a 30 page report. General Charles’s office had received the latest version of the “rule book” for these war games days ago. It was nearly 500 pages and he had no time or energy to read it. He assigned his newest assistant that task, and to generate a summation of the “rule book”. Charles – “Boy this must be 30 pages, I said I wanted a summary. I don’t have time for this so give me the jist while we walk” Assistant – “Umm, ahh, yes, yes sir. Umm, chapter 1” Charles – “Wait boy, why don’t you give me the summary, of the summary” he finished pointing at the offending document in his assistant’s hand. Assistant – “Well, umm, sir, there is a lot here, and, umm, I don’t, I really don’t, umm, know where to start” Charles rounded on the small man and looked tired, he spoke quickly and directly “Boy, calm down, take a breath. Now look I am the commander around here, I make all the big decisions. That means I need accurate concise information and I need it now. Now stop stuttering, stand up straight, and give your General the shortest version possible for the love of god.” Assistant – “Yes Sir” said the nervous assistant as he began to flip through the pages, following the General. “Well on the east side is E Army commanded by General Graham. On the West side is W Army commanded by, well, you sir. Each army consisted of 20000 men and 5000 guns. There is over 100 km of trenches three layers deep on both sides and placed over 500km of razor wire. Tons of wood, cement, and steel to create bunkers and tank traps. It will be necessary to come up with creative ways to overcome these obstacles and blah blah blah. The battlefield is a 400km2 patch of land about 80km south east of Winnipeg. It consists of flat firm plains and dense forest, swamps, hills and valleys, and rocky peaks. The trenches were dug north to south, so the opposing armies would be combating each other east and west. The battle will be more of an experiment in maneuver more than anything else. It is a test of new theoretical doctrines involving tanks and close-air-support. Casualties, prisoners and victories would be determines by referees. Sir, that’s, that’s pretty much all of it.” The two had made their way back outside. Charles patted the assistant on the shoulder and said, “Thank you my boy” and climbed back aboard his armoured car. He gave one last grin, and then he was off again. Charles had to make sure all preparations were made. It was late afternoon now, on Sunday, at midnight the games would begin. “What will Graham have in store for me?” Edited by Drake, Mar 8 2011, 10:49 PM.

80km South West of Winnipeg - Open Terrain General Graham – commander of E Army in his military headquarters Artillery had been fighting a blind dual all morning; it was now getting close to dawn. Graham had ordered an assault at dawn; it should be starting any moment now. The sun rising in the East, and to his army’s back would give his soldiers a slight advantage while advancing. The sun would be in his enemies’ eyes. Not exactly a new tactic, but it was effective. Tanks would provide cover for soldiers and crush razor wire. Graham saw the sun breaking over the hills, and land on the top of trees. Moments later he heard the dull droning of metal monsters rolling forward, the chaos had begun. By supper time Graham had been told by the referees that enemy reinforcements were coming and to conduct a fighting retreat. By the time the sun was going down Graham’s soldiers were crossing back over no-man’s-land and safely to their own trenches. The battle as it were continued for 3 more weeks. Trenches were gained and lost; casualties would leave and come back as reinforcements. Overall the men gained a good appreciation for the attrition of the battlefield. The men sleeping in cold trenches and dug outs, eating stale bread and drinking dirty water. It was hard for the men harder because they knew this was just an exercise. Even with the terrible conditions the men still endured. Graham was proud of his men, they followed ordered and were efficient. Even with the serious rivalry that emerged between the two armies his men were still professional. There were only a few fights when they armies clashes, just boys getting over excited and full of adrenaline. The tanks were the weakest link throughout the army. They broke down and some got bogged down in mud. Graham hoped that if he ever had to send tanks into real battle, that they were of better quality. Graham thought of such a day, when he would be sending men into real battle. It was a terrible burden, but one he would bare without hesitation. A little bird from intelligence had told Graham that the day for sending men into battle would be soon. He thought of it gleefully as he watched his men maneuver the battlefield and tanks barreling down on his enemies like a tsunami of steel. "Glorious!" |
