Why Earth?
I’ve some business to take care of.
You know, your father wasn’t as taciturn as you.

Turning around in his chair, Glacier faced his horde of men, glaring at Hex for distracting him while plotting their course. Despite the distractions, however, he was certainly right: the Changeling could stand to be more communicative, especially with his allies. Knowing full well he couldn’t allow it to look like this was taxing – though it was; he couldn’t shake the feeling that actually having to explain himself to them was slowing him down. He’d rather they just did what they were told, unquestioningly. – Glacier did his best to break from his dry delivery. He failed.

My research informs me of a rare plant that only grows on Earth and some patches on Yardrat; the plant is said to have remarkable medicinal properties. I figured before we go on any plundering or pillaging, it’d be wise to stock up on them.

Glacier’s favorite aspect of his men thus far was, without question, that they shared his respect for logic. Appearing satisfied by his answer, he turned around in his chair and began entering coordinates into The Treasurer’s mainframe.

Oh, and there are some trainers on Earth I’d like all of you to visit. Say what you will about the humans, but they’re always willing to sell you their services for a price.
Trainers?
You’re all out of shape. You haven’t seen combat in decades. I’d rather you practice before we jump into the fray together.

Respect for logic aside, Glacier’s sidekicks took issue with his delivery from time to time; he had a way of coming off as cold, uncaring. His previous comment certainly made all of them – men who were once the finest squad in the vast Changeling Empire – sound weak and pathetic.

You know, respectfully, I’m sick of you always talking down to us like that. Despite what Hex has told you, we’re not all as out of shape as him. Or as old. dissent ran thick throughout his comment; Glacier stopped what he was doing and turned around.

Rettbu, a rather large Taifuu-jin, had – in the short time he had known Glacier – made it apparent that he was willing to speak his mind. Unfortunately, he was also quick to anger and easily offended; Glacier worried if he upset the blue typhoon too much he’d cause a rift between himself and men. After all, Glacier was now their leader, and was he was both the youngest and newest addition to the group.

Rettbu, we used to call you Lightspeed as a joke. Not five minutes ago I saw you gasping for breath after having to walk upstairs to get to your room. You need practice more than any of us.

The group erupted in laughter, even the Changeling chuckled.

Well it’s not fair, I called the downstairs room . . .

The situation diffused itself. There could be no greater ally and no better supporter to have than Hex – he was invaluable, and while most did not fully understand what had just happened, a shared nod between Glacier and the Meguma-jin as the others walked away (busy teasing Rettbu) made it clear that the Changeling appreciated his actions.

Noise erupted on the monitor – the alarm was sounding. Whirling around, the crowd surrounded the massive screen.

We’re under attack.

I knew it, I KNEW we should have taken the weapons off our old ship!

Glacier had been reluctant to tear the ship a part on the spot, particularly since the addition of weapons to the vessel would have taken days. Given the current situation, however, it was clear the young commander had made a mistake. The group ran to their various stations, each assuming their designated roles; Glacier continued to pilot the ship given the looming danger as best he could.

SitRep.
One ship . . . small. Very small – what the hell? This thing’s not much bigger than a pod, what does it think it’s doing? Aw fuck, it’s coming in fast!

A huge metallic thud rang throughout the ship; cameras on the surface immediately assumed a large portion of the central console’s monitor, bringing the attacking ship into view. The attacking ship looked like two space-pods adjoined by a small bridge; in the strangest fashion, the vessel had initiated its attack by latching onto The Treasurer’s hull.

It’s using some sort of magnetic field to stay onto us.
I’m getting a growing energy reading coming off of it.
Weapons?
Er, no. I don’t think so. Do you see any weapons on that thing?

One of the pods began emitting a constant and steady stream of energy – a blowtorch. Meanwhile, the other pod, firmly anchored to the ship started rotating. Gaining in speed, the pair appeared to be a blur, with the torch itself rapidly beginning to mar the exterior of the ship’s pristine golden skin.

I’ve heard of this. Duragoni pirates, the cowards. Some of the poor ones use ships like these that they build on their planet. They burrow into the ship and storm it, making a wondrous mess of things in the process. Don’t know what they’re doing this far north.
I don’t understand. Why don’t they just get out of their ship and force their way into the hull?
Because not all of us can survive in the darkness of space, boy!
. . . I have an idea.

Even if there were only two of them, the Duragoni were a notoriously tough race. Glacier had the utmost confidence they’d be easily dispatched, but the ensuing fight would undoubtedly damage The Treasurer further; Glacier wasn’t willing to risk anymore damage to his ship. Though not a trait unique to the Changelings, the ability to survive in the vacuum of space unaided by technology had its advantages. Sealing the hull behind him, Glacier approached the whirling drill.

A massive outstretched hand caught the ship; it’s spinning force sent Glacier skidding cross the surface of his own vessel.

Careful! You get knocked off and we’re gonna have a helluva time comin’ to get ya.

Forcing the drill to a stop, the sudden shock to the system was enough to cause the mechanic to break on the opposing ship; the Duragoni inside were trapped against their hull. Peering into the glass on the pod of each, Glacier motioned to their ship, then to his. Holding up a single finger, he wagged it back and forth: no.

A mighty fist drew itself back, smashing the glass on both pods. Exposed to the elements, even the toughest Duragoni died almost instantly. Returning to the hull of the ship, Glacier had dragged the enemy’s pods inside with him, throwing them down at the feet of his men.

Uh . . . what d’ya want us to do with that?
Scavenge it for parts. You were right: at the moment, we need all the equipment we can get on this ship.
