"God I hate public transport," Darius said. His eyes were on the old war veterans, the families with their screaming children and the not-so-successful businessman. "We work for the wealthiest company on Earth, what are we doing riding on a ferry with the undesirables of society?" he said to his human partner. "This is our row here" Jackson said, apparently ignoring him. They squeezed into the compacted space, muttering apologies to those they had to move by. When they had finally sat down in their seats, Jackson pulled out his agency-issued portable computer and plugged earphones into it, slightly nodding his head to some old Earth rock tune. "Jackson," Darius said, slightly annoyed. The human took one earphone out and looked at him inquisitively. "I asked you a question." "Yes, you did didn't you?" Jackson replied, taking out his other earphone. "It's little wonder you're still a B-level agent, Mercer. You don't use your head." Darius bristled at that but didn't retort, patiently waiting for him to elaborate instead. That was the thing with Jackson, he'll end up telling you things you want to hear because he always loved to appear clever. It was one of his many character flaws. "Think about it Mercer, we're going to the planet Frieza where the Planetary Trade Organisation have spies anywhere. Especially at space ports; they want to know who's coming in and out of their planet after all. And it pretty much is their planet, King Chill is just a puppet playing to the whims of the upper echelons of the PTO. If we attempt to land on their planet with a Capsule Corporation ship, they're going to blast us out the sky before we even get into atmosphere. It's more secure this way and at least we know we aren't going to get turned into space dust." Yes, Darius saw now. He should have thought of it himself. Perhaps Jackson was right, his encounter with his brother had left him a little dazed and more than a little purposeless. His entire adult life had been dedicated to searching for him and now that he had found him and had been rejected, he didn't know what he wanted to do with his life any more. This job with Capsule Corp. was just that: a job. He didn't feel any particular allegiance to the Northern Alliance or any enmity towards the Tuffle Legion. As far as he was concerned, the war didn't concern him all that much. On the other hand, working for Capsule Corp. was better than doing nothing at all. He'd finish this next mission then rethink his life. As the ship did its tour of the North Galaxy, people got off at various stops. Darius passed the days making small talk with Jackson and some of the other passengers or researching aspects of his assignment on his computer. He had never been to Frieza before, most of his previous work with Capsule Corp. had been on either Earth or Vegeta. A brand new planet, all those unknowns. Darius didn't like it. "This should be fun." [ 514 Words = 5 days ] |
