The last great hope.

It was another glorious evening aboard the eighth wonder, children tucked neatly into bed (sneaking around the ship), responsible adults preparing for the following day (gambling, drinking and/or inserting things into each other) and a helpful staff eager to assist them (that one is mostly true). Amidst all this was me, Emperor Enoch, alone in his room, tightening bandages from shoulder to naval. I still had no idea what the hell happened or how that thing had found me and worst of all, I was too wounded to pursue. Maybe that’s not the whole truth, maybe I didn’t want to follow that thing back to wherever it was going. Regardless of the how’s and whys, I felt like I needed to make a report of it to command, I mean sure I had left earth for other matters, but there were still more than a few combatants down there and I left that thing hungry… “That’s right sir, a few hundred pounds and in the neighborhood of seven feet tall and there was one other thing too, it felt empty, I mean in the literal sense. When I first noticed it heading towards me, it was like watching a bubble in the ocean, you know there’s something there, but you can’t quite see it, it’s just a shape. Also, it made no hesitation in decided to eat me, to literally eat and consume my body, to be honest, it was unsettling as hell.” Even if my estimates were off by a bit, the important facts would stand out, he was huge, hit like a damn truck, managed to track me down and oh yea, likes to eat people. “I know it’s crazy, but I can’t help feeling like it was a monster, something out of an old fable or someone’s nightmare made reality. The only good news I can offer you is this, it does in fact bleed, a lot.” “Well thank you for the report Emperor, I’m sorry your brief stay wasn’t more pleasant, we do appreciate all the help you’ve given the alliance in these past few weeks and we hope this won’t end our partnership.” A curly haired officer had been taking the statement, he did his level best to hide his discomfort, but it was better he hear about this as soon as possible. “Nothing to worry about, it was unfortunate, but I’m no worse for wear and at least we have some intelligence on an enemy now. Oh and one more thing, don’t let the general soldiers near him and warn the officers, during the battle he actually ate one of my energy blasts, I’m not joking. It almost looked like he liked the taste too…” That reminds me actually, still need to reload my guns, it’s been so long since I had to do that, it’s a shame to break that streak I had going. Sitting at a desk, I grasp a bullet and open the revolver. (shinct, the sound of metal sliding on metal) BEEP … (Shinct) another bullet slides into its resting place, another beep at a distant console… Five more bullets in this one, then onto the next one, but only one more beep is heard. “What is that infernal racket?!” Blue lips opened to speak the words, but they weren’t mine. Perhaps in another life, but the flowing orange hair that accompanied the voice simply wasn’t for me. “It’s a signal sir… a ship out in the black? Looks like some kind of freighter class, it’s not matching up to anything in the logs, but it has a lot of room and sensors show minimal weaponry.” “Perfect. Room means cargo boys and out here, between galaxies, there isn’t anyone close enough to help them! Man the guns and get close, its easy pickings out there tonight.” With that order, a roar erupts from the crew of the unknown ship as they scramble to work, moving ever closer to the unsuspecting people on board the eighth wonder. In just a few hours the ship had died down, most of the kids were asleep and even Heritage only had a few handfuls of people left around, mostly private parties I think. It wasn’t until the ship was rocked by laser fire that everyone got up and moved around. They had found us, whoever they are and had wasted no time in disabling our hyper drive engine, although not permanently thank heaven. A message began broadcasting, “We are coming aboard your ship, prepare your goods and valuables for transport, do not resist and we will leave you unharmed. Resist and we will begin killing passengers, boarding will commence in three minutes time.” This cannot be happening to me, now of all times, when we’re just a day or two out from our destination and with no armaments to speak of really. I can’t let the passengers get hurt, or lose their property for that matter; it’ll wreak havoc on sales. Holstering my revolvers, I focus my thought on the enemy ship, moving over to their bridge in a flash of green light. “Good Evening gentleman, I am the ships’ captain and owner, I hear there is some confusion about the next three minutes?” “No confusion at all kid, my men and I are going to take your valuables, supplies and probably a few women and let you drift out into the south galaxy til you get somewhere.” “I’m afraid I can’t let that happen. You see the people on board expect a pleasant journey and our provisions and equipment are part of an order slated for delivery to the Northern Alliance war effort, so I can’t exactly hand them over to you. I would be willing to wager the items however, if you’re feeling lucky that is. A simple coin flip, you call it correctly and I’ll have my own men bring the goods on board, guess wrong and you never bother us again though, deal?” “Hahaha, you know I think I like you little kid, I mean here we are, luck smiling on us that we find such a ripe fruit to be picked and you want to test that luck with a gamble? Go ahead, either way I’ll win.” I knew they had no intentions of actually leaving should I win the bet; then again I had no intentions of losing. Flipping the coin, their leader went to speak, to call out his choice I’d imagine, but the words never came. In a flash of green light I was inches away from him, barrel of my gun pressed firmly to his lips. “Sorry what was that? I couldn’t quite hear you.” The coin touches ground, the hammer slaps the bullet and the blood stains the wall… Three minutes was just about enough time to take care of the rest, a pile of dead bodies and the smell of gunpowder were all that remained. “Damn, going to have to reload you two again…” 2 days, 1161 words [80xp // 100z] Quest complete! Rewards: 400z, ecm system x1 to be added to the 8th wonder, 200z [racial] |
