Chapter III: Killer Instinct
Melo: Transformation Level 1 Quest

Smart ass. I’ll fill you in on the details when I see you. I’ve no intentions of staying on Namek anymore, so I’ll leave right away. And just because I like you so much, I’ll even bring you a gift.

A gift? Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about. Just make sure not to wear the black lipstick this time... it leaves marks.” Melo gave a witty smirk to the communication device in his hand.

Only if you’re really good. Otherwise I might have to re-enact exactly how I came across this gift of yours. See you then.

At the end of the call from Athena, Melo closed the device and replaced it inside one of his pants pockets. During his last few days on Yardrat -- just outside of Prapra Hamlet -- he spent time training with Xerash and his family, mastering the secrets of the Instant Transmission technique. Xerash and his brother were surprised at how fast Melo was at learning, and could not believe it when he managed to reproduce their level of skill with the Yardratian speciality.

A part of him felt somewhat guilty because he did not reveal his true nature to them. By spending extended amounts of time around other races, Melo was discovering that he could not only imitate certain traits, but completely replicate the trait with the exact same proficiency as the person whom he copied it from. Notes in the Capsule Corporation Intelligence database referenced the ability of bio-engineering organisms, also known as Bio-Androids, to copy and mimic the techniques of other people, including the unique genetic structure of a multitude of races. The process was very complex, and Melo did not understand more than half of it. However, he did understand that a genetic recombination took place when his body obtained a new ability. So far he had yet to achieve what would be considered the acquisition of a technique -- he still learned Instant Transmission through training.

Xerash had wandered off after trying to steal the communication device from Melo when Athena first called. This was the third day he spent with the Yardratian family and liked his last. Each night, he would get the feeling that he needed to leave before some ill fate befell his new found friend and his family members. Not that Xerash or his brother were weak, he just did not want to be cause of a complete change of life for them. His hand reached into his pocket to retrieve the memory stick that he found there on his first night at Xerash’s home.

Melo made his way back to the guest room in the Yardratian’s quiet home, giving Xerash a nod to indicate that he was going to call it a night. Automatic illumination kicked in the moment his feet breached the threshold of the door to the room. Even in the rural areas, some of the Yardratians used the benefits of modern technology. He closed the door behind him and sat down on the bed, knowing he was not going to sleep a wink, but doing so out of habit. Melo could feel the other chuckle at his subconscious attempts to hold on to something that was no longer there: his humanity.

To further prove that he was engaged in a losing battle, the busty android woman who worked for Doctor Yellow left him a present in the form of a video log. Loaded onto the memory stick in his pocket was the evidence that what she said about him going berserk was quite accurate. Each night he stayed with Xerash, Melo loaded the holo-log into his multi-purpose communication device to review his actions. Just like the previous days, he accessed the memory stick’s data. One semi-transparent, holographic window popped up in front of him, much like a floating computer screen. Roughly seventeen inches of viewing space in full hyper definition -- it was almost like being a high-tech fly on the wall where the incident occurred.

A pang in his chest hit every time the beginning of the log started. The bloodcurdling scream is what caused it, nothing else. A woman’s head rolled out onto the otherwise clean floor of the main laboratory inside of Crimson Computronic’s only facility on Yardrat. Dark red rivulets flowed freely from the severed skull, showing how fresh the decapitation of the scientist really was. Seconds later, workers wearing white coats were dashing past the camera’s scope of vision, each one trying to free themselves from the two-hundred yard long laboratory. Limbs were missing from some of the potential escapees, staining their lab coats with the sharp color of liquid life -- each person bleeding a particular hue depending on their race.

The video feed shifted to a different security camera inside of the massive laboratory. For the first time, Crimson Computronic’s assailant was on screen: a man wearing a black jumpsuit with green lines moving from his shoulder to the sides of his pants and a CC logo on the collar of the jacket. No mistaking the apparel or the face for anyone else, whoever saw the video would agree that it was Melo. A haunted, hollow look was in his eyes as he stalked forward more like a monster than an animal. Murderous intent seeped from his body with every step he took -- even the viewer of the log should be able to feel how dangerous he had become.

As the guards of the facility began to filter into the lab, they wasted no time in opening fire with their automatic rifles. Ki-charged rounds ate through the lab desks, equipment, and storage cabinets quickly. Debris filled the air in the form of shattered glass, wood, and stone all in an attempt to put down the insane man who trespassed on company grounds. Melo moved swiftly, leaping from desk-to-desk on all fours, even clinging to the ceiling when the line of fire compromised any horizontal evasion. Dark streaks were left in his wake every time he moved, showing the his speed was far too great for the elite guards hired by Crimson Computronics. If the video log was not taken by high speed cameras, it would appear as if he just disappeared completely for a second or two then showed up again.

The first of ten guards died quickly, his armored chest plate provided no protection for Melo’s hand. A Brutii heart, much larger than any human’s, pumped in the beast’s hand before it was shoved into his hungry maw. All at once, it was swallowed with a strange vacuum effect foregoing any chewing or even digestion, like it had been pulled into a miniature black hole. Nine other guns trained on Melo’s position, only to fill the deceased body of their partner with gaping, white hot holes. Tactical displays on their helmets searched for Melo’s next location, and slowly they were picked off one-by-one. If only they had the advantage of seeing it from the raised angle of the security camera, the guard would notice Melo was using the debris and overturned desks to mask his approach.

Eight armored men later, the remaining guard actually made a run for the door, trying to flee through the exit that the scientist used when the cavalry arrived. His mad dash for freedom was halted by a pair of powerful jaws and teeth, clamping down on his neck. Crimson sprayed into the air, splashing against the window on the door and rolling down much like a B-rated horror movie. Just like the other eight, a vacuum effect drew the guard out of his gear, flesh and bones until there was just a uniform and rifle left on the blue-tiled floor.

Again the camera feed shifted, providing a view of the entrance to the lab, right on time for the sound of clicking heels to be picked up by Security Camera #4. Double glass doors swung open to allow entrance of a tall blonde, wrapped in a dark orange bodysuit with black accents on the zipper and clasps. Around her waist was an ebon whip that Melo was very familiar with. If it was possible, he frowned even deeper while watching the video for the fifth time.

Trailing behind the buxom woman was one man, armored differently from the rest of the group that the monster had just taken for lunch. ”Miss Orange, we should be careful. He is in his berserker state,” warned the personal guard.

Lazily, she raised a hand to signal she wanted complete silence. Her heels clicked loudly on the lab floor, purposefully avoiding the pools of blood here and there. Melo turned to face her, crouched on all fours once again and ready to charge. Swiftly, he disappeared from the camera’s sight, but everyone in the room knew his intended target. Miss Orange quickly snagged him right out of the air like an ice fisher, holding the lethal beast by the neck. Her grip was strong and the leather-like material of her black gloves creaked as she secured her hold.

Prepare the injection and deliver it,” she ordered in a calm voice, despite the wild thing she was restraining.

“Yes ma’am,” answered the personal guard, moving forward cautiously towards the subdued Melo. In his hands was a double-syringe, filled with a clear fluid that was extracted from a vial in the man’s vest pocket. Melo tried to snap at the guard, but Orange’s grasp on him tightened even more to the point where he could not even move his neck. A hollow howl shot from Melo’s throat as he was stabbed and the drug was placed into his bloodstream. Seconds was all it took to put him unconscious, then Orange dropped him to the floor and started to leave out the destroyed laboratory the way she entered.

Pick him up and let’s go. We’ve got more work to do before we can have our fun.

Emerald hues stared at a blank screen for several moments as he let the visuals provided by the video log to sink into his mind yet again. All he did was call for a taxi and start to think and that was the result. None of the security cameras showed how he got to the facility, or if there were more piles of clothes on the outside when he broke in. Each time he viewed Miss Orange’s proof, he felt the other laughing with complete madness. Times like these made him want to punch something or someone really hard. Perhaps tonight he was not completely out of luck.

Melo still had the address to Crimson Computronic’s facility and with his new technique, he could get there without needing any guidance or concern about being spotted on his approach. Strong beating in his chest told him that he was eager and nervous about what he would find. Determination is what fueled him forward, knowing he could not stop until this whole ordeal was put to rest. If he had to risk going berserk again, then that would have to be the case. The thought of losing control frightened him to no end, and if he did not learn to conquer that fear he would never win. Taking a deep breath that he normally did not need, Melo placed two digits to his forehead and focused in the direction he wanted to go.

Outside of Crimson Computronic’s Compound

“So you doin’ anything later tonight,” one sentry asked his partner standing next to him.

“Not going out with you,” responded the female night guard.

They both chuckled, clearly old friends that were accustom to the graveyard shift hours. Repairs were already being made to the main facility that had been attacked six days ago. The dome shaped structure was surrounded by floating repair vehicles as workers labored around the clock to get things back to optimal condition. A few football field lengths away from the main facility were the living quarters for every employee of Crimson Computronics on Yardrat. Company policy required all employees and family of employees to live on the grounds. More productive hours and less viable excuses was the company’s aim in making such a mandate.

The living quarters were twice as long as the main facility with row after row of housing, each with a blue sand backyard with a large park in the middle to separate the four wings of the massive quarters. Both of the sentries were strolling past the North Wing when they felt their hearts leap into their throats. A man suddenly appeared out of thin air!

Energy rifles were raised up at the obvious intruder, but both of them were bent at the nozzle before a single round could be fired. A double punch, one fist to each face, sent the guards on a mini-vacation to maintain total silence. Melo dragged both guards around the corner of a row of houses and laid them on top of one another as if they had fallen asleep in the act.

That ought to get some talk goin’ around the cooler tomorrow,” he quipped.

One problem with snooping around was that it was very hard to know what to look for and what to avoid. Fortunately, for him, Crimson Computronic’s told its sentries where not to go, meaning that is exactly where he should go. A sign along the North Wing’s mansion read: Orange Estate. Do NOT Enter Unless Invited. Using the shadows, Melo slipped through the security gates with a quick use of Instant Transmission and found himself on the lush, imported lawn of Miss Orange. He held back a chuckle as he thought about the sign outside of the large fencing around the exquisite home.

Bitch invited me in when she dropped an energy grenade at my feet.

Now that he was aware of Miss Orange’s fighting prowess, Melo was going to be much more cautious when it came to trying to subdue her. The approach to the mansion was completely unguarded, meaning the bitch of a robot was arrogant enough to think she was safe. When he reached the huge double-doors that led into the mansion proper, Melo locked on to one of the ki signatures inside of the large home. In the blink of an eye, he went from outside to wearing the fancy tuxedo of the poor butler he nearly gave a heart attack by showing up in the kitchen.

Finding the stairs was simple enough, the foyer had direct access to the upper levels of the mansion and he naturally assumed the master bedroom would be at the top and in the center of the house. A slow nod was given to any of the cleaning staff that noticed him. Having on a fancy tuxedo that matched everyone else kept the alarms from going off in people’s head. At the top of the winding staircase, Melo spotted the doors that would lead straight to the bedroom he had been searching for. Inside there was no ki signature, and that meant there was a good chance Miss Orange was inside.

Knowing he had no other choice than to try and catch her unaware, Melo rushed the pair of fine wooden doors and kicked them with enough force to send splinters into the best room in the mansion.

Payback's a bitch! he exclaimed, coming through the destroyed door frames immediately after they gave way to his foot.

Around his throat came a thick whip which yanked him to the floor, causing his face to meet the deep orange carpet that covered the bedroom. Melo groaned in pain when he felt his nose crack then reset itself all at once. His hands reached for the reinforced weapon coiled around his neck when a surge of electricity rolled through his body. The growl of agony that followed rolled through the entire home, but none of the help stopped -- they were used to this sort of thing. Miss Orange kept plenty of poor souls in her room until the crack of the next dawn.

You have a rare talent for falling into traps, Melo” taunted the android woman he intended on hunting.

Don’t say my name like you know it, bitch!

His retort was rewarded with another full surge of blue volts through his body. It lasted long enough to cause the repairs on his frame to stall, showing it was taking quite a bit of power to keep regenerating from her whip. Melo’s knuckled turned bone white as he gripped the carpet. With a heaving chest, the Bio-Android felt his vision double for a split-second. He was not going to be able to take many more of those full powered charges.

...and your carpet is ugly as fuck,” he said, bracing himself for the second rush of electricity since his initial capture. His hair stood on end this time and his legs twitched on their own. Melo could feel his nervous system go wild and his mind rolled in his skull.

I would save those words for something that could help you in your current predicament. An apology perhaps?” she chimed, walking around so she was standing right in front of him.

Green eyes looked up to get a look at her. She was in her night attire, probably only having got up from her bed when the silent alarms went off. Each one was wired straight to her mind instead of some master system in the house. The black teddy she wore accented her curves perfectly. Melo almost laughed at the idea of an Android wearing a teddy. His eyes caught movement to his side and he turned his head, seeing a man cuffed to the bed. Laughter came naturally and he could not stop it even when the frown on her face grew.

I can’t believe thi-!

The world went white all of a sudden leaving him in what would be described a limbo by some religious aficionados. Floating in nothingness, Melo tried to search for an answer about what just happened. One moment he had the perfect joke set and the next he was stuck in some kind of boring void. None of it made any sense until he looked up towards where the sky would normally be. A perfect view of Miss Orange was on display, but it was through someone else’s eyes.

This ain’t good,

Miss Orange walked around Melo who seemed to be completely unconscious. A pool of saliva soaked into the carpet from his last taste of her whip. She was surprised at how resilient he was given his incomplete nature. A few slaps on the back of his head, caused him to groan back to being awake and she placed the back of her foot on his head.

Now, about that apology, Melo.” she reminded.

Melo isn’t here right now. Please leave a message after the beep,” responded the man she thought was still Melo.

Before Orange could respond, she lost her footing when Melo grabbed her pale ankle and pushed her foot off of the back of his head. A loud thump came when she hit the ground, carpet not doing much for the metal frame underneath her human skin. Her whip came to life again, sending a charge through his body that was more than twice the amount needed to fry his brain.

Please,” he said, grabbing the whip with his right hand and yanking it from her grasp. Now that he was in control, Melo’s body could adapt much faster.

Genetic recombination for insulation was a parlor trick compared to what he could really do. The man hand cuffed on the bed finally freed himself and stood up on the silk sheets to leap. Melo casually raised a hand and fired off a yellow burst of ki that took the submissive male’s head right off.

Grown folks business. Don’t interrupt,” he finished, “Miss Orange. I’ve been waiting to get to you.

Melo commanded the doors to her bedroom to reform with a mental thought: wood and metal sliding back into place just as he pictured it in his mind. Once repaired, the doors were locked and reinforced with a wall of yellow ki on both sides. She had nowhere to go as she crawled backwards towards the wall. The look of fear on her face was glorious and one he would remember forever. Melo stalked forward until she was completely cornered. He held up a finger to his lips when she started to sputter apologies and promises.

Shhh. I like my dinner to be quiet.

A second scream rushed through the house coming from the master bedroom that belonged to Miss Orange. Again, the workers did not stop their nightly procedures, assuming the mistress of the house had enjoyed her evening. In the morning when her servants would come to retrieve her male entertainment, they would only find robotic oil stains and a twitching hand with wires sticking out of it, along with the headless body of Miss Orange’s date. Whoever or whatever had caused the chaos in the Yardratian mansion was long gone.
