Well this was certainly… embarrassing. The konatian prince once more found himself stranded. This time it was due to a completely different reason. The ship he commanded - aptly named The Immortal - was out of fuel. How was this possible exactly? His best guess was sabotage. Luckily enough he had been close enough to another planet’s orbit to drift here and make a shaky landing. If these events kept happening Shindo was bound to start losing his cool. So it was that the pointy eared prince found himself in the wrong location. He was trying his best to get to Namek in order to speak with his brother there. Now, instead, Shindo had landed on a world called Yardrat. The people here were known as Yardrations (naturally) and they were a strange lot. They were a short race with pale, pinkish skin tones and strange facial features. They were all bald and had spotted domes though some were able to mask their facial features when dealing with others through some unheard of technique. Despite their appearance they were a lively culture both highly intelligent and lovers of good, clean fun. Shindo liked them almost immediately. Were it not for the misguided reason for his arrival he might even consider spending some time on this blue planet. However, he had a job to do and so could not stay for long. Currently the Konatian prince found himself in a simple mechanic shop seeing to his ship’s status. The owner of the shop, an older Yardratian with a robust form dressed in hand-me-down clothes and covered in grease stains and oil addressed Shindo. “Hello there handsomely paying customer!” With the money Shindo was shelling out it was no wonder the man was always so polite with him when he was around. “Greetings Telc. What’s the status with my ship? Has she been properly refueled yet?” “Well, yes and no.” “What do you mean?” “Well, let me ask you this. Which would you prefer to be told first? Do you want the good news first or the bad news?” Shindo pinched the brim of his nose. “Great. Okay, what’s the good news?” “Your ship has been refueled.” “Okay. Perfect. What’s the bad news?” “Your ship won’t run on the type of fuel I have.” “What? What do you mean it won’t run? You told me you had the right type of fuel!” The look on Shindo’s face was incredulous. He was expecting to be off this world by the end of today! “Well, I thought I did. I mixed up the fuel types. So now she’s all powered up but with no way to put it to use.” “So what you’re telling me is that I’m stranded.” “Well, just for now, your highness. I’ll have another supply coming in oh… about a month?” “A month? I can’t wait that long!” “Well there’s no other mechanic in this quadrant who is going to have what you need, I can guarantee that. Not with what your ship runs on. Oh and also I’m going to have to charge labor fees for removing the excess fuel now. Ship that size - it wasn’t easy.” Telc picked at his nose idly while speaking. “It wouldn’t have been excess if you hadn’t put it there to begin with.” Shindo was slowly beginning to lose his nerve. In the back of his mind the prince contemplated how well he’d be able to get away with murder if he just cut Telc down here and now. He could always hide the body somewhere on his ship. They’d never search there, right? After all he’s a foreign diplomat in some regards so there’s got to be some sort of immunity system there. Maybe prison life won’t be so bad on Yardrat? “Hey, you still listenin’ to me pointy-ears?” “Hm? Yes? Oh, sorry. Drifted off for a minute there. Fine, fine. Just get it done.” “As you wish.” Turning from the spot Shindo stormed out of the man’s establishment with a sour look on his face. Stepping out into the Yardratian air he let a cool sigh slip past his lips before slumping some. The rate he was going this war would be over before he ever got anywhere near involved. Things were just not looking up for the Konatian prince. “Psst.” Shindo paused in his forward motion and glanced around. He could have sworn he heard something. “Psst. Over here.” Those blue eyes shifted across the landscape and fell on a single Yardratian ducking out from behind a building. He was looking Shindo’s way. The pointy-eared prince pointed a finger at himself questioningly and was rewarded with a firm nod. Slowly he approached the strange fellow. “You need something?” “Not so loud. Follow me.” The Yardratian man starting walking away at a swift pace. With nothing better to do Shindo decided to follow - though was highly cautious about it. With his mistreatment just moments ago he wasn’t entirely ready to just start trusting the first Yardratian he saw. Not to mention the man’s actions were incredibly suspect and there was always the threat of someone after his life again hanging in his mind. There was plenty of cause for Shindo to be wary. Once the duo had left the merchant district and seemed to be in a rural area the Yardratian turned to him and gave a big grin. The konatian’s hand fell to the hilt of his blade out of instinct as he awaited the man’s words. “So, I overheard that you’re trying to get off world and are having a bit of trouble. Is that true?” “Yeah, and?” he responded. “Well I might just be able to help you with that. That is, of course, if you don’t mind putting a little work into it.” Shindo’s caution rose still but what else could he do? He was in a bit of a jam and therefore had no choice but to listen and accept the words of the strange man at face value. If nothing else it will help him pass the time until his ship is ready to go. |

“So tell me, stranger, why do you want to help me?” he asked curiously. “Its not so much that I want to help you than I want to hinder Telc. Him and I have been at odds for quite some time and anything that costs that man some business is fine by me. He’s a snake true and true and gives us Yardratians a terrible name to off worlders.” The pointy eared prince would ponder this for a moment, weighing his options. “Okay, I guess that makes sense. Is that why you were in such a hurry to leave that area? Worried he might overhear you or something?” “Oh, no. I wouldn’t care one bit if he heard me getting a customer out of his clutches. I just didn’t want to discuss how exactly I had planned to help you. You see the mechanics don’t like us sharing this secret with others. Tends to ruin their business quite a bit. So I thought it would be best to leave the area before discussing it further you see.” “Alright, I understand. Exactly how is it you plan to assist me anyway?” “Well, we Yardratians are famous for a very specific type of technique. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. Does the name ‘instant transmission’ ring any bells?” the Yardratian looked at Shindo with wonder in his eyes. Clearly he was proud of the fact that even a South Galaxy resident such as Shindo had heard of their fabled dimensional jumping technique. “Sorry, never heard of it before.” The yardratian man face planted out of surprise at Shindo’s words. He shot upward and appeared to have an angry expression on his face. “What do you mean you’ve never heard of it? Its only the best technique you could ever dream of!” “Well, I’ve had a lot of tutors growing up keeping me in the best of condition for combat and I’m telling you that I’ve never heard of the technique before.” Shindo’s expression was pretty clear. He honestly hadn’t a clue what the yardratian was talking about. The short one was left scratching at his bald head now while contemplating these turn of events. "Very well then that means you haven't the faintest idea of what instant transmission is, huh?" "No a clue." "I suppose I'll have to show you. Tell me, sir, where is it that you are from? Konats I presume?" "Yes, I'm from Konats. But I really don't see what this has to do with anything--" and in a flash the yardratian man had vanished from the spot in the blink of an eye. A strange beam like sound was the only indication of anything happening. The prince looked around for a moment wondering where the man had gone off to and was rather confused. Did he really drag him out all the way to this place just to bolt on him and leave him no closer to his brother than before? Yardratians sure had a strange sense of humor. "I'm back!" Shindo jumped from the spot and whirled around only to see the yardratian man sitting there with a smile on his face. His clothing attire had changed - wearing a garb that would be akin to the natives on Konats. In his hand he held a single drink whose fragrance Shindo recognized instantly. It was a fruit drink made only on Konats. How had he gotten one so quickly? More importantly, from where? "Your world is rather nice, I must say." "You've traveled to Konats before?" Shindo was skeptical. "Why yes, just a moment ago in fact." Now he knew the yardratian must be crazy. This whole this must be some sort of joke. He was half expecting some Earthling douche to come running out and screaming 'you've been punk'd' any second now. When the camera crew didn't revealed himself Shindo was forced to acknowledge that cocky little smirk the pink man kept holding. "So that's it then? You're telling me that you've got possession of a technique that can cross galaxies?" "Indeed I do," he responded with a light chuckle. "Pretty impressive, eh? This is what we call Instant Transmission." The yardratian man was smiling, a huge grin across his ugly features. His pride in this technique certainly knew no bounds. "If you have such a powerful technique at your command... why then doesn't everyone learn it?" "Well that's the thing. Few people who aren't of our race can ever truly master it. Most people that get anywhere with it can only use it sparingly and are left drained after use. Its not something you want to just fling around all willy nilly and what have you. Even someone as youthful looking as you, konatian, will no doubt be lucky to get a single use out of it." The prince took these words and weighed them in his mind. Leave him drained, huh? Usefulness diminished. It was almost like the yardratian was trying to discourage him from learning the technique. He would not back down, however. "If this technique can get me where I need to go - even if I'll only ever get one use out of it - then so be it. Please, teach me this technique no matter what the cost!" |

A few days had passed now while Shindo quietly took tutelage from the strange yardratian man. He had come to know the man's name as Hhem. As strange and cooky as the man was he was certainly not so much when it came to his teaching. He was a strict tutor to have and often pushed Shindo to his limit in the days that followed. As it was the pointy eared prince was currently taking a break from their training. He sat in a small gym room with his back to the far wall and slummed to the ground. A bottle of water was held in his left hand and idly sprayed into his mouth while he rested. "Come on, young prince, don't tell me you're giving in already today," remarked Hhem from where he stood watching three of his other pupils. They were all Yardratian as well and were already very advanced into the technique. While they still had a bit of work here or there it was pretty clear they would have it mastered in no time at all. Shindo on the other hand in all his time spend training had yet to perform a single displacement. At one point he thought he shifted his body a half an inch to the left but he wasn't deluding himself. He was nowhere near ready to put this technique to work. "I never give up, Hhem. Its not in me nor is it in anyone of my race to let a challenge put them off." Taking another swig of that drink he got up from where he was resting and moved back to the center floor where everyone was practicing. Some were sparring each other using a daring display of teleportation back and forth as they exchanged blows while others were simply meditating to concentrate their ki. That was where Shindo came in. He sat with his legs crossed with the others and closed his eyes. Slowly exhaling his breath he began to go through the steps of calming his mind and reaching outward to sense the ki of others around him. The trick to the technique was to focus in on a single point of ki and bring it to the forefront of your mind. Hhem carefully watched the Konatian hard at work with a curious expression. He was unsure of whether or not Shindo really had what it takes to use the instant transmission technique. So few outside of their race ever really grasp the concept of it anymore and even fewer than that move on to master it completely. No, he had doubts Shindo ever truly would. At best he might be able to perform short jumps or one great jump all at once but exhausting himself in the process. Still, he had never taught a Konatian before so perhaps there was something to be said about their race. Their strength of will was certainly a rare commodity in the quadrant. So it was that Shindo continued as he was for quite some time. The day dragged on in such a fashion with Shindo getting no closer to the technique at hand. While he grasped all the concepts and seemed like he should be able to pull it off no problem by now there was always some sort of troubling thought that would creep its way through his concentration. It was so hard to focus on a peaceful event such as they were told when he knew a war was raging just planets away and his siblings could be caught up in it. Shindo's attention would fluxuate often and it was the cause for his slow progress on the instant transmission technique. Eventually Shindo would bid his tutor farewell for the day having felt he got as much as he could from them. For now he would practice on his own after he finished a few errands. His first priority now was to check in on Telc and see the status of his ship. Assuming he had the technique down and - though long shot - was able to transport himself and something as grand as his vessel a planet away he would want to make sure it was finished when the time came. "Telc, are you here? It's me, Shindo!" he called as he entered the shop. It was eerily quiet however. That was something unusual given how many gadgets Telc usually had running at any one given time. Shindo took caution due to those instincts screaming at him. Slowly he pressed further into the shop until he could hear voices coming from the back. One was clearly Telc's. "Yeah, I'm telling you this guy is some sort of royalty or something and he's working with the Northern Alliance." "I'm glad you told us about this. We'll have to be careful and dispatch of him discreetly." "Yeah, yeah. Now what about my reward?" "You'll be paid for your help, Telc. You'll also get to keep the Konatian's ship as a bonus." "I like the sound of that.." Shindo knew then and there that he was being sold out. Before he could back out of the shop, however, someone came up behind him. "You there!" He began to bolt further into the shop. "Stop!" There was no turning back now. Shindo barged into the room where Telc was talking. Two men were there - Changeling men - and they wore the emblem of the Tuffle Legion. So it seems their reach has touched even Yardrat's peaceful crust. "Damn you, Telc. I'll have your head for this!" Shindo shouted as he reached for his blade. He hadn't a chance to draw it, however, before the two changelings and the third pursuer were nearly upon him. Shindo kicked over a crate of various goods at them to slow them down before rushing into another room and back toward the maintenance area. He was frantic but managed to fight to keep his wits about him. "Come on, come on... where is she..." And then he spotted it. His ship in the far back. Racing toward it he could hear the Tuffle Legion members hot on his tail. Once he arrived at the Immortal he threw himself onto its hull climbed aboard. Swallowing hard Shindo said a silent prayer to the gods that this worked before placing his hand against the hull and two fingers against his temple. Just as the Tuffle Legion men were nearly upon him Shindo - ship and all - vanished. |
