Capital of Magumar

A large skyscraper towered above the central district of the Magumar Capital, far from the raging ocean of lava that scorched the beaches of the singular island. The building was roughly circular in shape, glass panels reflecting the rays from the system’s star. It was one of the largest buildings in the city, size being indicative of importance, of course. A large sign suspended above the main entrance showed the name of the company which owned the building and used it as its headquarters: Aegis Security. A backdrop of its emblem, a stylised red and black shield, was visible behind the name.

Aegis is a company renowned throughout the East Galaxy for being the leading supplier of security and bodyguard personnel. They even did mercenary work in minor wars or battles, but never accepted a contract which would pit them against the planets’ respective governments. They were beginning to move into the South Galaxy, diplomatic envoys already developing relations with the Konatsian governments.

In a boardroom, high up in one of the top floors of the building, the board of directors sat around the long table, talking to each other about general topics of conversation. A few minutes later the CEO walked in, uncharacteristically late, prompting silence. “Sorry I’m late,” he said to the people present. “Traffic was hellish, had to get out and walk. I say walk, I mean run.” Polite laughter followed.

The CEO sat at the head of the table, placing his briefcase at his side. “We’re all here, Mark,” a young taifuu-jin to his right said. His name was John Castle, Director of Public Relations. They were both excellent friends and both went over the agenda for this meeting the night before, John had a keen sense of how the directors worked and used that knowledge to further Mark’s goals. “But we weren’t informed of the agenda. Why did you call us here?”

“Two things,” Mark replied. “One, I wanted to formally let you know that relations with the Konatsian rulers are going smoothly, we can expect to gain permission to construct a building in the capital relatively soon. From there, it’s just one small step to the other planets in the South Galaxy.” This was met with applause, good news for the company and its stockholders.

“The second thing is something a little more personal in nature, but affects the company massively nonetheless,” he continued. He pressed a small button on the intercom which connected him to the secretary outside. “Could you send him in please, Sandra?”

A tall Maguma-jin walked through the door, wearing a long black trench coat and black sunglasses, even in the dark of the room. You only had to look from him to the CEO to recognise the familiarities. “Gentlemen,” Mark said. “Most of you have met my son, Adam.”

Adam glanced briefly around the room before focusing his gaze on his father; he hated the business bullshit that his father loved. There were only a few of the directors that he could stand. His place was out in the field, managing part of his business empire on the front lines. “I’ve called him here because I want you all to know that I am creating a new branch of the company solely to do with ‘Target Apprehension and Execution’, something which will bring even more money to our already massive business.”

Some shocked gasps were heard around the room. “You want us to become a bounty-hunting service?” one of the directors said indignantly. He was the Director of Operations, Harold Leauveax. A thorough scoundrel, the only reason he hadn’t been fired yet was because he owned a large share of the company. His decisions were very influential.

“In essence, yes,” Mark continued on, unfazed. “We can attract the best freelance bounty hunters out there and put them to work as an organised, well-equipped force to be reckoned with. The contracts will come flooding in from governments and private contractors alike. This could bring massive monetary benefits to the company and increase our renown.”

“So what would Adam’s role be in this new branch? Why did you call him in here?” another of the directors said.

“He’s going to head this new branch of ‘bounty hunters’, leading them and taking on the most dangerous missions. And before you accuse me of nepotism, this will be the most dangerous job we have to offer. It will be far from easy.”

Silence descended on the boardroom as each director thought it over. When Mark called for a vote, the majority of them raised their hands to yes. The benefits were too great for the company to resist. “Excellent,” Mark said, a smile playing about his lips. “Adam, go and get started.”

“Yes, father,” Adam said, turning around and walking out the door. A Taifuu-jin the same age as him was waiting outside, leaning against the wall. His name was Jason Castle, son of the Director of Public Relations and Adam’s closest friend.

“How’d it go?” he asked of his friend.

“We got a green light,” Knight said, grinning at him. “Let’s go hunt down some criminals.”
