FYI: This is from a recent newsletter from Debbie Gilbert, the NYC EE Fan Club President (I just gave her that title) regarding the New York PBS desire to save EE. She tries very hard to nurture a good relationship with her PBS, and they have a mutual respect for each other: Yesterday, a reader forwarded to me (Debbie) an email being sent around by the Walford Gazette, which distorts what is going on with this drive to save the show, and is urging fans to 'protest' by calling and writing WLIW, rather than donating to support EastEnders. If you received that email, here are the actual facts: Despite what the Gazette may have told you, this is not just a 'private drive': We are working directly with WLIW on this. As mentioned before, WLIW did not just cancel the show; they saw the show did not receive enough pledges to pay the BBC's licensing fee for another year, and contacted us to ask what they could do to try to save it. WLIW is offering full support to EastEnders fans; WLIW has created a dedicated pledge page on their website and pre-taped spots to run on-air (starting tonight), run an ad in their weekly email blast, etc. The Gazette also warns fans against donating, telling them that if WLIW does not make the goal, your donations will not be returned. While that is ALWAYS true when you donate directly to the station, I have repeatedly made it clear that if you send in a pledge to the PO Box, and we do not make our goal, your check will be returned to you. I hope you understand you can trust in that. Like many of you, I have no idea why the Gazette continually tries to cultivate animosity towards PBS, but it is counter productive. And that email is telling fans to do the exact opposite of what is needed to save the show. Here is the bottom line: PBS is already under attack from enough sides - from people who don't like its content, don't like its funding model, etc. PBS does NOT need another group of people who continually attack them. What they do need are viewers who will partner with them, as newsletter readers have tried to do. It is by filling that need, and working with them, that we have kept EastEnders on the air on WLIW for the last 6 years, and that is what will keep it on in the future. The Walford Gazette does not get that, but hopefully enough of you do. Who was it who introduced all of us to EastEnders in the first place? PBS! And who was it who saved EastEnders from cancellation in New York in the first place (after WNYC cancelled it)? WLIW, that's who! They do not deserve our protests - they deserve our thanks and support! The fate of EastEnders is all up to you: You can buy into the negativity that put the show in jeopardy in the first place, or you can understand WLIW's financial position and be positive and pragmatic. If you want to save the show, please join with us and send in a check for WLIW/Channel 21, (or pledge online via the dedicated link below.) It is that simple. Edited by Velvet, Feb 11 2011, 04:38 PM.
