Wow, love that arch and the colors in/on the stone. Looks like a peaceful place to rest. That poor family lost a heck of a lot of kids at a young age! 1 month, 7 months, 11years.

Yes! How? I can't adjust the size, and my squinting at it doesn't work. How do you do it, Jill?

I wonder how the children died.
Oi! I'm finkin' on it!

Squinting worked. :-)

Thomas Hudson (near the top) died in Oct. 1810 - 1 month.
Thomas Whitfield (9th from top) died Aug. 1840 - 7 months (This is the grandson of the parents listed at the top)
Caroline Sarah (10th from top) died March 1855 - 11 years. (granddaughter)

Interesting to note...only one is listed as being buried in the vault, Maria - the name behind the greenery. She lived to be 78. (Maybe 74, 76?) Hard to tell her death date, maybe 1905. Maybe she's the owner of the tomb. At the top it reads "This monument (recreated?) in loving memory of..." and some of the listings specifically list the people as being buried elsewhere.

Anyone know what "relic" means? As in "Elizabeth Jane, relic of Thomas White Esc.".

Just to add more info you didn't need...Henry and Glendon Turberville (What a name!) didn't have long lives either...only 28 and 30 yrs.

Thanks, Jill--very interesting information. Whoever put those names on the monument didn't give us any clues, did they? Maybe the kids died from things we no longer worry about here in the US because we have vaccinations?

Relic means "remains" or a body part--I googled it. I also saw the words reliquary and relict--which probably come from the same Latin root.

In the case of "Elizabeth Jane, relic of Thomas White Esc.," they may have meant to put relict because it means "widow"--and that would make sense of the phrase.

Thanks again.
