And now we're reading about the need to turn it off! Just this past Sunday I was reading an article about weaning yourself off your devices and instead actually speaking to people who are in the room. What a revolutionary idea. Even so, for my part, the whole world should be wi-fi territory. |

I'm so addicted to it, I don't think I could live without it. |

I would find it hard not to have access to the internet for any length of time, but I could go a few days if I was on vacation somewhere cool. :-) Having a cell phone is always good, but I do have a problem with people not being able to turn off their phone for a couple hours (or just not answer it). I've had meals with friends that are interrupted multiple times by texts and phone calls from their spouses, kids, etc. Really? They can't survive for a couple hours without talking to you? Seems like my parents managed to go out to dinner and a movie when I was young and they were totally unreachable! I somehow managed. I also can't stand the people that need to hold lengthy, loud conversations on their phones while in a public building such as the grocery store checkout line, the post office, etc. I once stood behind a woman in the grocery store line that was having a heated conversation in Spanish on her phone and she had the other person on speaker! That way everyone could clearly hear, but not understand the entire argument! Oh and £1? I want some free wifi baby! Although I usually end up buying a tea or having a pastry, so I guess I pay more than £1 for my free wifi. |

The article's author seemed to think people with you take precedence over people trying to get to you. There's a thought to consider--old school good manners.
I always think they are talking to me--oh, it's not me? How humbling! Edited by Mary Ann, Jun 15 2011, 10:39 AM.

Yeah, I think this is interesting. In retirement mode, a lot of older people I know who used computers for decades and have cellphones and other electronic devices have begun to move away from using newer technologies. Some of them were early adopters, too. I don't know why--certainly they have less need to be hyper-connected than younger folks. But it seems they have found the cost-benefit of time spent with devices was out of whack and provided a less satisfying experience than in the past. Or maybe it's the economic depression we're experiencing that's taken an edge off technology for them? |

I used my smart phone a lot in Amsterdam. I missed my friends and family and wanted to share my new experiences with them, so I wrote texts and e- mails to everyone, and even sent pictures. That way I could stay connected to them, and they could get a feel for what I was seeing and doing. (I used to send postcards, but not anymore!) |

Hi Bobby...oh I miss postcards. I accidentally left my phone at home yesterday for 2 hours. I felt lost and cranky. Its so nice to have whilst your waiting somewhere. I love to multi-task and feel like I get twice as much done when I can talk and answer emails. |

Yes, my body is home, but my brain is still in Amsterdam! Can't seem to get the two of them matched up. . . extremely exhausted!

I always feel a little off if I forget my phone at home, even if I don't need to make any calls. I feel so out of touch! And then I get home and find that nobody called and I got no texts. That's one way to realize you aren't as important as you think. ;-) |

That jeg lag is a killer! Usually takes me a week and a half to get back to "normal". Glad you made it home safely Bobbie.
