Always wondered why so many statues are headless/armless,etc.. Was it an act of rebellion or just an accident or poor construction? Any guesses?

The Elgin Marbles remain controversial to this day. Although, I'm not an expert on every aspect of them, this Wikipedia article sums it up pretty well:

I think the reason they are headless, armless, etc., is because the place was left in ruins and pieces were pilfered with little regard before they were moved to the U.K.

They are very interesting to see in person!
