Autscape is an annual conference, retreat and, hopefully, autistic-friendly experience run by and for autistic people (including those people who think they’re on the spectrum). It lasts three days and there are lots of presentations, workshops, leisure activities and social opportunities to meet aspies. I’ve been to the last two and hope to go to the next. I had a good time. Many of the same people turned up at my second conference and I particularly liked meeting them again because they were friendlier and more relaxed the second time round. There’s a lot of people in an enclosed environment and one gets swept along in a tide of presentations, workshops and discussions which take up most of the time. During meal times, breaks and free time in the communal area, people tend to form into little groups and one-to-ones. These are social encounter situations. Some people come in groups, or pairs and others hang about in groups with people they know, socialize with new people or keep to their own company. The place is tolerant of social eccentricities and shy people. There’s a social encounter system in use for sensitive aspies using badges. A red badge means you don’t want to talk to people and you don't want people to talk to you; a green badge means you want to socialise but can't start a conversation; a yellow badge means you’ll only talk with select people whom you have notified and given prior permission and a white badge or no badge means anyone can talk to you and you can initiate conversation. You can switch badges throughout the day, if you wish. This year’s theme is ‘Owning Autism’. The conference is being held from Monday 22 to Thursday 25 August in the market town of Pontecraft, West Yorkshire about 9 miles south east of Leeds. Booking is not open at the moment. Good achievement through Aspie Village of getting some change to that "proposers will be informed of the success or failiure of their proposal", but given that savage system system has still been in use for this year I find it a great struggle to swallow going. Is also quite expensive, hence profting from having made the talk proposers suffer that system. Yet "owning autism" is the type of topic that might make it possible to speak out for being nicer to the talk proposers and to all folks. Edited by tern, Apr 9 2011, 08:34 AM.
