Chapter 1: Move-In Day

Xiao Shi

How on Earth and in Heaven above is this a school? This is more like one of those hotels that you see in magazines that have the title of the article as “Hotels Bill Gates Could Stay In…If He Could Afford It”. Seriously, I’m pretty sure I saw a bellhop earlier. “Welcome to the Shanghai College of Arts,” an overly-cheerful woman beamed at me as I headed toward the gymnasium. All around me flocked the wealthiest kids in China accompanied by their diamond rings and stiletto heels while I casually strolled along with my mom while she turned a map – that was five sizes bigger than her head – in every which way in a sad attempt to find my dorm and other necessary locations. In all honesty, we just looked like a couple of lame tourists and the looks that we were receiving from the other students only confirmed my suspicions.

“Xiao Shi, are you sure we’re going in the right direction?” my mom asked me, and flipped her map upside down once again.

“Yes, mom, I’m sure,” I sighed, “I’m just following the signs that say ‘Gymnasium that way’.”

She peered over her map and looked at the signs on the ground and nodded understandingly and re-folded the map into a pile of uselessness. We walked into the gym a few moments later and the parents and family were separated from the incoming freshman. It reminded me somewhat of my high school graduation…minus the robes.

There were about 600 chairs aligned perfectly in the middle of the gym and students piled in from every direction and made sure to sit next to their best friends while I sat in a corner all by myself. After everyone had settled in a seat, an older man in a black robe walked up to the podium and cleared his throat. “Welcome to the Shanghai College of Arts,” he said in a deep, authoritative voice, “I am Director Han and I sincerely hope you enjoy your time here and I trust you learn a lot.” He went on to talk about the rules of the school and all of the clubs and activities offered here. “On another note,” Director Han said, “This year, we are honored to house trainees for various entertainment industries.” Suddenly, girls from all areas of the gymnasium squealed loudly. Director Han put his hands up and everyone immediately quieted down. He continued, “We ask that you do not harass them and treat them as fellow classmates. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary actions. Am I clear?” He paused for a moment to let everyone nod to his rhetorical question. After twenty more minutes of lecture, he finally let us go and see our dorms.

I met up with my mom outside the gym and we followed the crowd to the dorms which were indeed much like a hotel room. There were two plain white beds on either side of the room. Atop them were fluorescent lights that were slightly bigger than the beds themselves. The walls were painted light blue and the room was decorated with white lamps, desks, and dressers. My mom and I strolled into the room and sat down on the bed closest to the window and looked at the scenery. “Wow mom, it’s so beautiful here,” I sighed as my mom sat down next to me on the bed.

We both peered out the window for a while until we heard the door open once again. We both turned around and saw a girl that was my age with pig tails and thick white glasses around her big eyes. She smiled. “Hi, I’m LiLi,” she said with a grin, “You must be Xiao Shi! I’m your roommate!” She smiled and walked up to me then bowed a little and I did the same. My mom and I got up and met LiLi half way and looked around the room. “So do you like it here so far?” she then asked me.

I nodded my head. “Yeah, it’s amazing! I’ve never seen any place in China that’s like this. In fact, I don’t even think Zhongnanhai is as fabulous as this is!” I awed.

LiLi returned to her side of the room and began to unpack her things when my mom noticed something in her suitcase.

“My my my,” she said as LiLi pulled out a large piece of paper, “Isn’t that ‘Sparkly’?”

LiLi unrolled the paper to reveal a poster of a five-membered band that I liked. “Mom,” I laughed, “It’s ‘SHINee’, not ‘Sparkly’.” I walked up to LiLi’s poster and admired the picture of the five gorgeous men as she hung it up on the wall followed by posters of other bands.

“Oh, you know SHINee?” LiLi asked with a laugh.

I nodded with a laugh. “Kind of,” I said rubbing the back of my neck, “I’m a photography major and I think they’re incredibly photogenic…especially Jonghyun.”

LiLi laughed. “I’m an art major but that has nothing to do with my love for Key. Although, I do love to paint portraits of him.”

She pointed to her bed at a giant briefcase-looking object and I walked over to it and peered into it. Inside were tons of pictures of Key on all different canvases using various types of paints. I was almost ashamed of my own photography after seeing her artwork. “Wow,” I breathed, “You’re amazing!”

“Thanks,” she replied, “I’ve been painting for as long as I can remember. How about you? How long have you been a photographer?”

I laughed lightly. “Oh, just a few years,” I said, rubbing my neck once again, “It’s just a recent hobby of mine that’s turned into a passion.”

My mom laughed and I could sense that she was about to tell LiLi some huge secret about me. What that secret was, though, I don’t know. But then it came. “Xiao Shi is always telling me that she wants to photograph SHINee one day. I think she’s in love with them.

“Mom!” I yelled, feeling my face become a tomato, “I am not in love with them!” She laughed at me and rubbed my back reassuringly. “Why must you be so embarrassing?”

They all laughed and continued to unpack items and I did as well but try as I might, I just couldn’t shake this feeling off of me. Maybe it was college freshman jitters but something was bugging me way deep down in my soul; something…dangerous.

Oh my. It's finally done. Honestly, I didn't mean for it to be this boring but it will be for a few chapters because I just need to introduce everyone. Normally I don't format my stories like this one but each chapter MAY be told from a different person's view point. For example, this chapter is Xiao Shi's and the next chapter will be someone else's. But don't worry, I'll have the POV at the top of the chapter so you won't get confused. :D
