There are certain things I'm tired of seeing in video games, movies, etc. This is another one. There will often come a time where you meet some mysterious girl and-- what ho!-- she's the Big Bad's daughter. So after gunning down hundreds of soldiers that were just doing what their country forced them to do, you finally reach the Big Bad and contemplate whether or not he should die, whether you can talk him out of it, etc. Why is it only the leaders that get this treatment? Is it that none of the soldiers ever have families or something? Srsly. SPOILERS This was especially painful in the second Tales of Symphonia END SPOILERS. And yet we're always the 'good guys' who can do no wrong-- unless we accidentally kill one of the innocents/soldiers on our side (in the plot), which is somehow so much worse. |

I dunno, there are several games out there that determine sperate morality differences based on the good or bad. Like Bioshock: You can choose to save the little sisters by freeing them from their genetic curse like thing and be the good guy while getting very little power to spend. Or you can kill them off, gaining full power to spend. Then there are games like Fable, where you can decide which side to stay on depending on the quests that your complete. At the end of Condemned you have the choice to kill the serial killer once and for all, finally retrieving vengeance for the friend he killed. or you can take mercy upon him. (He kills himself anyway though) There another one out there thats really good, but I cant think of it right now. |

See, this is why Kojima doesn't DO that sorta thing... the multiple endings thing (You know the whole morality thing is usually tied to an alternate ending). |

But that seems like EXACTLY what I was talking about, Fayt-- does it matter how many minions you've killed in any of those games, or is it just the big events? |

Then again, with the games Fayt mentioned (minus Fable), the enemies are basically psychotic with no chance of going back to normal. You really don't have a choice to kill or not to kill when you have a crazy trying to bash your brains out with an iron pipe. Though overall I agree, it has always annoyed me on how minions are treated as subhuman. According to some pieces of media, it's ok to murder some soldiers who are only doing their jobs but at the same time your supposed to show compassion towards the genocidal maniac just 'cause he has more plot significance. There is one game I recall which actually averts this, Deus Ex 0_o You actually get called out if you kill your enemies, as they are basically doing their job, and you suffer some penalties. |

yeah, even in Fable you can decide to kill villagers (evil up) or kill bad guys (good up) in Infamous you have the choice to do bad or good. like frying a box of kittens to be bad. or powering a hospital to be good. Course there are those morally grey areas, like frying a box of kittens to power a hospital (new power source ftw) (The above was taken from CAD) |

I don't know whether or not to be horrified. Anyway-- there's one game that does its best to make you regret every kill. MGS3. D: |

Big Bad usually gives you a monologue, kills your dog, THEN starts throwing fireballs. |

This is why I love Drakengard. You are a soldier. They are soldiers. Granted, they are trying to mess with Apocalyptic MacGuffins, but the point still stands that they are human. They scream, they beg for mercy, and you keep mowing them down while your dragon companion mocks your endless bloodlust. Itr gets really fun when the conscripts show up. The enemy soldiers are like, 17 years old. Every other one you kill yells something like "Mother, I don't want to die!!" Meanwhile the rest of your party is begging you to stop, but these are still soldiers trying to kill you. Horray for morality issues! And yes, you HAVE to kill them. Every. Last. One. EDIT What I hate is when the "Dynamic Morality Sytem" is absurdly obvious. "Would you like to eat this kitten?" A: Yes / B: No Gee, is this gonna give me evil points? Really, people...Moral dillemmas are often far more subtle, not off-the-wall absurd. I also hate it when the game basically forces you to be the hero. This pissed me off in Fable, where ever time I killed a Bandit I got good points. So I can't fight Bandits, who make up half the damn game!? And at the end I still have to fight the villian? Why can't I join him, and fight the hero? Why can't I at least take his place, instead of being lauded as the great hero? I would love it if the evil path threw you on a totally differant story arc, but often you wind up doing the same thing, you just look more creepy.. |

I like Stephen Colbert's take on morality issues. Stephen: Let's have a debate. Guest: All right. Stephen: I'm totally against throwing kittens in woodchippers. Why are you...? Guest: Well, sometimes you need to dispose of kittens and there just aren't any bridges around... |
