(It's not raging, but it could still be considered a rant so meh.) Light and Darkness have always been profound in symbolism and imagery for humans. This is easily because light and darkness have been there with humans since the beginning of life. One often held view is that light is righteous while darkness is evil. I find this view to be horribly incorrect and outdated. The beginnings for this may stem from the fact that light can show your surroundings, thus standing for truth, while darkness represents the unknown. Mankind has always feared what they do not know or understand and thus it had been labelled as evil. Luckily I feel that these days the connection between light as good and darkness as bad has been lessened greatly. Now come my personal view on the subject. Light is the realm of the physical. Darkness is the realm of the mental and spiritual. Let me explain: When the world around you is lightened and easy to see, you focus on that. You focus on how the body reacts to it's surroundings, what the surroundings are, other people, a large variety of physical objects. The main task on the human mind at the time is mainly how to act with these physical objects. Thus, where there is light, there is a focus on the physical surroundings of the individual. Darkness is the opposite. Darkness works as the absence of light. It leaves the surroundings a mystery and humans are left unknowing of the world around them. However, it is often when one cannot see out, that one sees in. Without the knowledge of the physical obstructions dragging away the focus of the mind, humans look inwards. They think. They dream. They ask questions of themselves and their soul, the meaning of life, and other such questions. In light, a human is far too occupied with what is around them, that it is far harder to focus on what's spiritually inside of them. When the night comes and darkness is left, as you lie in bed and are undisturbed by your physical surroundings, your mind can wander and allow insight into such spiritual questions. In summary: Light draws attention to the physical world surrounding you, your focus is drawn to interaction with the physical aspects. Darkness hides the physical world from sight, freeing your mind to focus on deep thought and promoting the mental and spiritual aspects of human beings. Just my opinions on the subject, a take that I'm unsure if it's been thought of much before. |
