General Full Name: Zavan Ibn Hadaxaya Ibn Vindarna, westernized as Zavan Hadaxaya Blood Status: Pure Blood Wand: Simurgh tail feather, Teak, 15”, rigid Pet: Zavan was given a Seua fai (Asian Golden Cat) kitten named Zaosha as a gift from one of his Uncles the month before he was to leave for Hogwarts. So far its still small enough to fit on his pillow, though he was warned it would get bigger then normal… Personality 5+ words that best describe your character: Shy, quiet, pressured, In-between, Traditional, Responsible, Eastern, Thinker Personality Description: Shy: Zavan has never been the outgoing type of person. As a young boy he was more likely to be playing inside his family’s home, chasing cats and playing his own games, then out with the other boys. Though as he grew up and his father had him learn more and more active skills, many of which were taught to groups of boys, he soon found himself forcing himself to make friends, at first to please his father, though as he got older, more specifically after the move to Hogwarts, he developed a distinct sense that to be the best he could be he had to fight this, though it is often an awkward attempt and does not come natural to him. Quiet: Zavan prefers to keep to himself and stay out of trouble. While his younger brother was off causing mischief he would stay inside and read or write. He has always been able to amuse himself, and has never been bothered by being alone. This helped with his moved from the Gizil in Samarkand to Hogwarts. He was able to hole himself up in the Library or common room corner and read or study and not worry what the others were doing or that he didn’t know what the others were doing. Though in the recent years he has been feeling more alone and been trying to make more friends and have someone greater to talk to the Zaosha, the cat. Pressured: Zavan is the eldest son of a family where eldest sons come with high expectations. His father, Hadaxaya, him self the eldest, had always tried to push Zavan to exceed in all of the traditional areas of excellence for a Persian Wizard. This has always strained his relationship with his father, who was exemplary in all fields, with Zavan always feeling as if he hadn’t lived up to his fathers standards. His mother, Mandana, soothed his worries, and always told him his father was proud of him, but just had a strange way of showing it. She also taught him to respect him and that it was his role to honour his father and it was his responsibility to the family, his parents, and his grand parents, to work hard and be the best he can be. On the few occasion Zavan’s young mind would wander and worry that he was failing all of his ancestors she would calm him by telling him that as long as he did his best they would be proud. Though he tells himself this, he has moments where he gets preoccupied with the need to make his family proud. In these moments he becomes a very serious young man and often acts more like an adult, or at least what he thinks adults act like. In-Between: Zavan is between two different worlds and not sure which he wants to be in more. The world of Hogwarts and Britain is new and exciting, but his Old Persian home in the magical Gizil district of Samarkand is familiar and comforting. But balancing the two worlds is hard since one is a lot closer then the other. He doesn’t exactly know which one is better or which he should be, and it doesn’t help that he’s also enjoying the growing up of puberty. Being away in Hogwarts is his first time when he’s been away from his family and doesn’t have someone to go to for advice and he’s learning for the first time how to really make decisions on his own. Traditional: Zavan grew up in a home steeped in tradition. As much as his mother was a bit more of a progressive woman, the household was still a traditional one. Coffee was served hot, dark and sweet, his father was the head of the household, and his word was law. The Tarihi, pureblood families, were the most respected of all, with the Karışık (mix bloods) below them in a servant class and the Kör (the local term for muggles) were below them. In the world that he grew up in all the respectable Pureblood families, the Scholars, the Wealthy Merchants, the Warriors, the Alchemists and the Clan Leaders, all had karışık servants. For their part, the karışık are the respected, although lesser, middle class of the society taking the roles of crafts person, shop keepers, minor traders and other lesser specialists. Few become great scholars, though this is rare as they have less time to work at such things. The kör are the bottom rung, with few of them brought into the wizarding world, they are sometimes general labor or work in the employ of karışık or Tarihi. Usually they work on the same levels as İth, a Steppe race of lean four-foot humanoids that are roughly equivalent to House Elves. These and many other older ideas influence the way that Zavan thinks and views the world, but coming to Britain, a somewhat more modern place with its own ways of thinking has been a huge shift which he is still getting used to. Responsible: Zavan has always been taught to be responsible for his actions. It wasn’t just him self that was reflected in his actions, but his parents as well, and his brother, and his grandparents and his clan. He was taught that because he was one of the Pureblood he was expected to act and behave the a certain way; be gracious to guest, respect elders, offer food to those around you, don’t enquire after women impolitely, shake hands upon meeting people and much more. Growing up he learned three main things: how to ride a horse, to shoot a bow, to use a want and to tell the truth, and nothing was more impressed upon him then the value of truth. A man was only as good as his word and to lie was to dishonour all that came before him in his lines. This has had the effect of making Zavan a very serious child and in the last year before going to Hogwarts he spent less time playing and more time studying and being more ‘grown up,’ as he worries that to much play and childishness would be irresponsible of him. Though his mother tells him not to worry so much, as his ancestors would understand that he is still a boy growing up and that it is no sin to have fun, though his fathers constant pressure had more an effect on the boy. Eastern: Zavan grew up in the east and is firmly rooted in its world and traditions. Though he is still an adolescent he is a very serious child that likes what he is accustomed to in the Orient. Though the Wizarding worlds of east and west are not as different as the muggle ones they still have very different bends. Coming to the west one of the biggest differences was that suddenly it was more dependent on his ideas and less so on his families ideas. Though family was still influential it seems that each witch and wizard was expected to make their own way in the world, as opposed to a family working together and continuing on. His mind too is geared in a different sort of way, remembering poetry instead of buying books, appreciating things on their quality and lacking the need for immediacy in everything, little things that make him a little off from the west. Thinker: Zavan from a very early age has been a lover of books and problems. Of the games he would play with his mother growing up, many would be word puzzles and riddles. He learned many of the old stories by heart and began writing poetry at a young age. Though nothing sublime it is still better then many adults. His tutor was very impressed at how fast he learned history and theory when he was taught it. The first two years of his education were primarily these two subjects, with very little practical magic. It was during this bookwork that he became and insatiable reader, devouring the works that his tutor would provide for him. Both in Persian and some Arabic and Turkish, the beginnings of each he learned. It was with this basis that he was then taught English and given a few western texts on alchemical theory and magical history to familiarise himself with. Alchemical science was always an interest of his and he was given simple problems to solve by his tutor as extra credit work. There was something about figuring out puzzles and riddles that he enjoyed, a thrill as a problem unfurled before him in his mind. Fears Zavan’s biggest fear is being a disappointment to his Father, and by extension his family. Though he has grown a little more lax, he worries greatly that his actions may shame his family and tries to do his best to make them proud by working hard in his studies and other activities. He also has a fear of flying that steams from and early and traumatic encounter on a flying carpet. That said, he dose dream of flying on a winged horse someday. Skills/weakness’s Zavan comes to Hogwarts skilled in several areas of traditional Persian/Turkic magic. He has a grounding in simple alchemical theory and practice, the basics of Astronomy and Astrology, and he has a great knowledge of Persian magical history and a minimal understanding of western magical history, and know the theories behind charm making while not being able to actually make anything greater then ‘reduces burns’ or ‘keeps dry.’ He has several practical magical skills. He is half capable of Persian Water Divination (a form of divination that requires a Anachitis stone to be placed at the bottom of a bowl of clear water that will awaken a spirit within the stone to find the information you seek. He can do this, though his ability to control the spirit of the Anachitis is limited). He knows the basics of the Persian Flame magic and preform simple manipulations. This is a form of magic where a magical flame is conjured and then manipulated into fire balls, guiding lights and other useful things 9keys, steps, shields, beds, bows, etc.), to a lesser extent other fires, candle flames ect. Can be used as well though with much more limited results. At present Zavan has a small Flame lamp he can use to create things such as small fireballs, shields and ghost lights. The Flame Lamp is a small brass lamp amulet that he wears around his neck and contains an ever-burning scarlet and gold flame that will not harm him. This is the Adur Gūshnasp, the Flame of Warriors, one of the three Great Flames. One of his favourite candle tricks is to create a small bird or winged horse of the flame to fly around. He also has the grounding of some simple Persian charms and the like. Mostly things such as levitation, the summoning of books and items, casting of circle barriers and the lighting of lamps and fires. Spells: For the summoning of items: “Fra Khwandn ______” and the name of the item with your wand pointed at it. For the Levitation of items: “Bala Brdn” accompanied by the upward flick of a wand. Alternatively one may command “Mn Ba Shma Tmas Bh Afzaash” and raise ones hand to make things rise that way. One then has control of how things rise and fall and move while suspended in air. The larger and heavier the item the greater the exertion and skill needed. For the creation of a Circle Barrier: “Mrz Keshadh Shdh” Repeated while drawing a circle with a wand to create a barrier against antagonistic magical forces directed at it from the outside. For the lighting of lamps and fires: “Ahtraq” while pointing your wand at the ignition point, usually anything flammable will catch, though you can create flame on non-flammable surfaces but it will burn out quickly. Alternatively one can say “Mn Asmsh Sh'elh Bh Dst Mn” and create a flame that dances on our finger tips of an outstretch hand. Zavan is generally weak when it comes to physical tasks. Though he was taught to ride and shoot a bow but he is only passable at these skills. He is not a very physical boy and much prefers the world of books and learning. He is also very shy and not great at interacting with others. Though manners demands that he be polite and outward to guests, he is only confident in the simple rehearsed lines people expect of him. After that he becomes shy and unsure of himself. Though he is surprising himself how well he is handling being so far from home. Likes/dislikes Zavan very much likes words: calligraphy, poetry, writing, reading, etc. He enjoys writing, and to a lesser extent drawing (mostly sketches for theory and designs), and keeps books of his random disjointed jottings, ramblings and rhymes. He also likes music, predominately music from home; with its heat, flash and intensity in the drums and strings he remembers watching the dances of Gypsy’s and other caravan folk who came to the Gizil. There dancing always reminded him of fire, and when they would fire dance he would sneak out of his house at night to watch. He has a small box from his mother that, when he opens the lid, music plays and tiny flames dance inside. He also likes cats and hot days, cool gardens and lush shade under plants. The sounds of fountains and bird songs are also enjoyed. Zavan very much dislikes physical labor and activities. Sport and competitions of that nature have never really been something he enjoys, which comes from a combination of generally being bad at them and disliking the pressure and disappointment associated with it from his father. The one exception to this is riding, Zavan dose love to ride and would ride out with his brother and their chaperon into the Steppe. He loved the feel of the movement and the freedom it brought, these free rides divorced from the strict rules and judgment of the lessons and races of his father. He also dislikes heavy rain and snow, cold in general, bland food and sour fruit, rough, uncouth people, loud or overbearing people, Spiders and sneaky night things that give him the creeps, western coffee; its When it comes to flying it’s a sort of mixed bag. He does enjoy flying and the feeling of flying, but hate the idea of falling. This generally keeps him away from most sorts of personal levitation devices such as brooms, though he feels safe enough on a flying carpet and quite enjoys spending an afternoon reading with Xerxes curled up beside him in the sun floating above the courtyard of his home. One of his dreams in life is to one day riding a Pegasus. There was a specific breed of them that roamed the steppes and on a rare night one or two would drift into the Gizil and rest for a while before flying off. On the few nights he heard them he would sneak to the roof and watch them, dreaming of flying away on adventures like the people in the stories he read. Interests/hobbies Zavan has several hobbies, most involving pen and ink. He like to write, little stories, poems or just his observations. He sketches a little but enjoys calligraphy much more. He also likes chess and other mind games, anything where he can play at puzzles and such. He also reads, a lot. Most of his room was filled with books, and folios of paper with notes and sketches. He also collects feathers of various things. Appearance General appearance: Zavan is of a medium height, slender build and dark brown skin. His complexion is lighter then many other Turks as he doesn’t get much sun. his hair is dark and between medium and short, it is straight and dark as is the norm among most Persian and Turkish wizards. Though he is inactive he is still lean, a trait from his mothers side. His face, when not overtly showing expression, has a pleasant vacancy about it, a far off look like he’s always thinking about Malaysia or Peru. His nose is wide and mouth small. His eyes are small dark almonds with flecks of sliver and sapphire. His ears are slightly big for his face and it bothers him a little. Zavanhttp://www.iranian.com/main/files/blogimages/MohammadMokhtari.jpg History Brief History: (150+ words) Father: Hadaxaya Ibn Vindarna, Merchant Studied under a Turkic Wizard Mother: Mandana Ibn Atbin, Scholar, Studied under a Persian Wizard Brother, younger: Astoh Ibn Hadaxaya, Hooligan, Studying under a Arab Wizard Birthday: 19th November 1982 Zavan was the much-celebrated first son of Hadaxaya ibn Vindara of the Martyaxwar clan and Mandana ibn Atbin of the Tkeshakh Clan bor on the 19th of November 1982. He grew up in the Gizil, the wizarding quarter of the old city of Samarkand, His father a respected merchant of respectable wealth and his mother a scholar of magical history and lore. Neither of them attended a magical school proper, as is the custom they each had private tutors, Hadaxaya a Turk and Mandana a Persian. In 1985 his younger brother Astoh was born. His early childhood was mostly spent in the company of his mother in the woman’s quarters of the house until the age of seven when he was given his own room next to his fathers. It was at this age that he was then instructed by both his father and other men in the arts of riding, archery, wandsmenship and proper decorum as well as his formal scholastic studies of history and magical theory and other skills. The physical aspects Zavan never enjoyed and he would often complain to his father, and ask why he needed to know these things, to which he was told in a kind and firm way that it was the duty of the eldest to keep these traditions alive, which he eventually begrudgingly accepted. By the age of ten it was evident that he had no love or inclination towards sport or other activates of that nature, but excelled greatly at the academic things. With Mandana’s subtle pushes, Hadaxay decided that being the father of a great scholar was just as well as that of a great warrior (with the added bonus that he was less likely to be killed). After four years of intensive study, Hadaxay heard of Hogwarts as a great wizarding school in the west. Imagining the opportunities for his son there, he began the proses of trying to have him enrolled. His mother slowed this, both wanting him to complete his traditional education and not wanting her son to go so far away. By the time he was fourteen his father felt that Zavan had learned enough from of the traditional magic that he could be sent abroad to learn more. Zavan came to Britain unaware of the resent social disruption that was the Death Eater rebellion. He has no allegiances or affiliations beyond his fathers clan. At Hogwarts Your best subject(s): History of Magic Your worst subject(s): Flying What you might like to do after Hogwarts: go home and spend some time with his family, maybe travel a little but likely end up working under his father The secret word: Edited by Staff Edited by Kevin, Jun 22 2012, 05:01 AM.

Very interesting ministry file! It is good to know more about the forms of magic he'd be using, but remember that the emphasis at Hogwarts is on Western magic, and any magic performed with ill-ill or not approved of by a faculty member can still warrant a deduction of House Points or further punishment. However, feel free to allow him to show off to his friends, as I'm sure they'll all be curious! Just... don't let it get out of hand.
