Quest: The Civil War
- Short Story: Introduction -

It began five years ago, when the good king Cedric Pentacles, beloved by his people, stepped down from the throne. He was a just king, an honorable king, but though he held together a great kingdom, he was young. His wanderlust and desire for adventure pulled heavily on his thoughts, and after many years, one day, he simply left. It was on that day that black clouds began to fall from the mountain tops.
The fight for control of the throne was brutal. The king had had no son, no heir, and named no one as future ruler of the kingdom. His young naivety convinced him that the two guilds, the Amber Chantry and the Knights of the Scarlet Crown, would rule justly as a council. He could not have predicted the chaos that would be wrought between them. Entire noble families were assassinated, lives thrown into disarray, as men struggled to become the next monarch. Some were backed by the Knights, others by the Chantry, and this political struggle brought tension between the two never before seen. Though no war blossomed between them, for months the kingdom was without its king, and with no foundation the Imperial Army was slow to respond to its provinces. Attackers kept at bay by the might of King Pentacles now encroached upon the land, and the threat beasts and monsters grew greatly during this time.
After months of disarray, a man stepped up to take the throne. He was placed there by the Knights of the Scarlet Crown, a noblemen from a prominent family. This should have provoked the Chantry further. However, they submitted to the new king, certain that they could win his favor from the knights. The man whose head now bore the crown would come to be known as the Tyrant King.
This is the story of the Kingdom of Stormkeep, a land long forgotten by the Empire of the Iron Mountains. For years they have been left to themselves, never regulated nor watched by their sovereign. Forsaken by the Iron Mountains, and their true king, the kingdom has fallen into disarray. The Tyrant King rules completely over the land, bearing down on his peoples with an iron fist. With both the Imperial Army and the two great guilds at his command, Stormkeep has become a place of poverty and corruption. The nobility continue their glamorous lifestyles while commoners starve in the streets, forced to work like slaves for what little gold they can acquire. Many die in the cold months of winter, and many still can not feed themselves in the heat of summer. It is truly a kingdom in shambles.
The Tyrant King rules unopposed from his castle in the capital city. At his command are the Knights of the Scarlet Crown and the Amber Chantry. Both, however, are mere corrupted remnants of the councils they used to be. They are still highly at odds with each other, each vying to win the affection of their monarch and discredit the other. Yet while each is at the other’s throat, they bow to the same king, and under their eyes, Stormkeep is kept in order.
But the streets are clamoring for revolution. Too long have they been devoid of justice. Though the might of the Tyrant King now keeps them safe from the threat of orcs and goblins, it matters little when death comes by starvation and sickness. For years the people have plotted an uprising, and now, they have the numbers and weapons to succeed. All that stands in their way is the might of the Amber Chantry, for precious few mages go unwatched by them, and to challenge magic with naught but sword and shield would prove folly indeed. For this reason the revolution lies in wait. Though the magic guilds – shards of great embassies scattered throughout the lands, who take in those possessing magical prowess and train them – ally themselves with the common people, they are bound by their order to not stray from neutrality in matters of political control. Some individuals, however, have left the guilds to join the rebellion, but this alone is not enough to rival the power of the Chantry.
Then, one day, two travelers step foot into the kingdom. Masked by hoods of black, they wander from city to city, gathering news of the people’s blight until at last they arrive at the capital. There, they confront the leaders of the rebel forces, and offer a deal. They will lead the revolution, offering their power, if one was to be put on the throne. The speaker reveals himself as a powerful wizard, one who alone could rival the Chantry’s might. With the promise of ruling justly and fairly, the wizard’s proposition is accepted, and the rebels had found a leader.

Only days later, the revolution began. The first to rise were the outer cities, furthest from the capital. As news of their uprising reached the Tyrant King, the army was predictably dispatched to quell it. However, as the army neared these farmlands, more cities rose up, closer to the capital. The army was split to deal with both cases, when the third wave commenced. Then the fourth. Then the fifth. The city guards and few knights stationed there were no match for the overwhelming population of commoners, and the army was forced to split completely. With the Imperial Army in shambles, the rebellion makes its way to the Capital City.
With the army away completely, the only defense at the capital are the few remaining members of the Amber Chantry and the Knights. Yet the sheer numbers of the rebellion prove difficult even for the two guilds, and the war for the capital begins.

With the war waging through the streets of the capital city, a chance presents itself to the rebellion. With a small group of rebel forces, the Wizard storms the Tyrant King’s castle, determined to put his life to an end slap him around a bit and tell him mean jokes. However, once inside the castle grounds they are met with the few remaining forces of the two guilds, a last line of defense for the evil king. Though they are newcomers to the Knights and the Chantry, they still prove a threat, and before the rebellion can truly achieve victory, they must be dealt with. With the success of the resistance resting on his shoulders, the wizard charges forth.

By order of the Grand Penitentiary, the members of the Chantry have been ordered to capture any rebel magic users. The Knights, however, have been ordered by the Tyrant King to crush the rebellion in its entirety, and care little for the whims of the Chantry. They seek only to slaughter the resistance and end this foolish uprising. With their orders clear, but their feelings muddled, the last defense for the Tyrant King speeds forward to meet the Wizard Leader.
