Chancellor-elect Kohler arrives at CDU headquarters in Berlin
Kohler and CDU/CSU Sweep to Majority Government

BERLIN--With the counting complete in this year's General Election, the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union has secured a rare one-party victory, carrying 328 out of the 620 seats up for election in the Bundestag. This result follows four years of governance by Chancellor Steinmeier and the Social Democratic Party/Green alliance. The leader of the CDU, Gerhardt Kohler, is widely expected to easily win the vote next month to become the Federal Chancellor. Kohler led his party to a record 277 mandates in the Bundestag, mostly through expert campaigns on the ground which led to a near-sweep of the single-member seats available in his home Land of Baden-Wuerttemburg. The CDU's Bavarian sister party, the CSU, managed to secure all 45 constituencies available in the Republic's largest Land, and secured an extra 6 list seats due to its impeccable performance statewide. The sheer size of the CDU/CSU support, felt in all Lander with the exception of SDP stronghold Bremen, means that the parties will not have to look for a coalition partner--a first in German history.

The SDP, which had had difficulty in navigating the new geopolitical reality in the wake of the collapse of the United States, lost more than 40 seats, mostly in the South, though with a tremendous swing against them in Berlin as well. The Greens were wiped out at the constituency level, and were forced to rely solely on list seats to maintain their representation in the Bundestag; much of this is attributed to the controversial carbon tax and tax increases shepherded through by the party in the past four years. The Left once again declined, though it held on to its East Berlin strongholds and saw a slight increase in support amongst immigrant communities. For the second election in a row, the liberal Free Democratic Party failed to enter the Bundestag; while they increased their vote from 3.7% to 4.8%, this was still below the 5% threshold required.

Chancellor-elect Kohler ran a campaign which was described by the media as "energetic and lively" compared to the "sluggish" SDP campaign. Key issues were the role of Germany in the new global political order, with Kohler articulating a view that Germany must fill the gap left behind by the United States within the NATO Alliance. Pledging vastly increased spending for military research and technology for export, the CDU caught the attention of unemployed Germans in Berlin and Hamburg, as well as the attentions of industrialists across the South. With a firm mandate, it now remains to be seen if Kohler can deliver on his promises.

Chancellor Kohler and Foreign Minister von und zu Baden at European Parliament, Strasbourg

Kohler Articulates New Vision for EU

HAMBURG--With NATO struggling in the wake of the collapse of the United States and little interest thus far from the new nations of North America, Chancellor Kohler today presented a new vision of the European Union as a "stronger, more federal" union as a necessary Western counterbalance to Russian and Chinese development over the past six years. Speaking before the opening session of the fall assembly of the European Parliament, Chancellor Kohler stated that Germany remained "committed to strengthening the European experiment, and driving it further forward to the future." Kohler, who has overseen a revitalization of the German armed forces in an effort to ensure that NATO and the EU remain fully manned militarily, stated that while he is not yet convinced of the need for an end to national boundaries, "we must not think that federations are intrinsically doomed to failure."

Germany, the largest member nation of the European Union and its largest economy, has been the driving force behind the European project in recent years, arguing that without a united Europe, the nations of the European continent risk seeing their influence on the world stage diminished. Kohler stated that Germany would continue to press for additional centralization and economic and diplomatic cooperation abroad. "With the fall of the United States, Europe remains the last, best hope for global peace, prosperity and stability. Germany will remain a leader within and a partner without the EU" said Kohler in his closing remarks.

Germany assumes the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union in January of next year.
