Arsenal centre-back Thomas Vermaelen has suffered a setback in his recovery from an Achilles tendon injury and will consult a specialist.

The 24-year-old, who has been sidelined since picking up the problem playing for Belgium on 7 September, suffered a setback in training on Monday.

"On the scan, his Achilles is clear," Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said.

"But as soon as he stays out for a while, it tightens up and he has pain. We don't know the source of his pain."

Vermaelen was injured while captaining his country against Turkey in their Euro 2012 qualifier in Istanbul and the Belgian's continued absence provides Wenger with a headache in central defence.

Laurent Koscielny is out for two games after he lost an appeal against a red card picked up in Sunday's 1-0 Premier League defeat by Newcastle, leaving Sebastien Squillaci and Johan Djourou as Arsenal's remaining two recognised centre-backs.

"I don't know where we go with Thomas time-wise but, at the moment, he cannot play," added Wenger.

Abou Diaby is also sidelined and Wenger stated the length of his absence from an ankle injury will depend on the midfielder's reaction to a test on Wednesday or Thursday.

"If he gets through that, it will be very quick. If he still has pain, he will have to see a specialist," Wenger commented.

Shit, this sucks for both Arsenal and Belgium. Belgium really needs him in our defense. :(
