INTERNATIONAL WRESTLING PHENOMENON RING OF HONOR INKS STATESIDE TELEVISION DEALSWITH iN DEMAND, TVN AND ECHOSTAR
PPV/VOD Distribution Deals Bring ROH into 50 Million Households
New York, May 3, 2007 - Ring Of Honor Wrestling (ROH), in association with G-Funk Sports & Entertainment, has concluded programming and distribution deals for PPV and VOD wrestling cards with iN DEMAND Networks, TVN and EchoStar Communications Corporation’s DISH NetworkTM, making the critically-acclaimed ROH brand available for the first time ever to approximately 50 million American households. The agreement calls for a card every 60 days from shows both stateside and abroad, and will premiere July 1. A total of six cards are planned throughout ‘07/’08. ROH owner Cary Silkin made the announcement today with G-Funk’s President Ken Gelman. The debut event, entitled “Respect Is Earned,” will be taped May 12 in New York City from the Grand Ballroom of the Manhattan Center, and will feature a glistening array of talent from Japan, England, the U.S. and Mexico.
Long revered by a loyal underground fan base, the Philadelphia-based ROH—currently seen on Canadian, British and Japanese TV—appeals to the disenfranchised wrestling fan fed up with storylines which seem to take precedence over the kind of powerful ring competition that ROH specializes in. ROH, in fact, is seen to have the highest level of athleticism in its field today, which recently culminated in a sweep of the 2006 Wrestling Observer awards for “Most Outstanding Wrestler,” “Best Brawler,” “Best Major Wrestling Show” (ROH took four of its Top 10) and “Best Booker.”
“Fans around the world now know that our brand of action is, indeed, the highest-flying, hardest-hitting most daring and acrobatic action presented today,” says Mr. Silkin. “We are thrilled that we can finally show a televised audience what our crowds have known for the last six years…that ROH harkens back to an earlier era of wrestling where authenticity still counted for something. There’s a magic at our shows that I, as a wrestling fan, had all but given up on.”
G-Funk Sports and Entertainment will be handling all marketing and promotion for the wrestling programs, including creation and launch of an affiliate website on May 15, www.rohaffiliates.com, which will contain easy-to-implement marketing materials and all event information. Each show will also be supported by a range of targeted national consumer advertising and promotion.
According to Mr. Gelman, “Ring Of Honor already has the respect and enthusiastic following of legions of fans around the world through their live events, but represents a fresh new entry into the world of televised wrestling. These distinctive programs will prove a welcome change-of-pace for audiences and a popular new option for cable operators and satellite providers as they expand their transactional offerings.”

This is a huge step for RoH, and after five years they've managed to work out a good deal for it (which I tip my hat to if I had one). Not only that, but the people that would be curious/interested in checking it out but can't for whatever reason (can't order stuff online, can't get to a show, don't want to potentially waste the 20$+ on ordering a DVD) can a lot easier. I'm personally pumped, especially with the news(/anouncement) of some lucha libre added to the mix too. This'll actually make me put down some money again for a PPV for the first time in a few years (as TNA PPVs haven't appealed to me in a long while, and WWE's...meh, even the Rumble hasn't inspired me to waste the money).

This means I'm going to be their live for the first PPV taping? FUCKING SWEET I'm part of ROH history bitches, makes this shit so much more exciting, atleast for me. Not only am I sitting 4th row (on the floor) to see Morishima, KENTA, Marafuji, amongst others, I'm going to be on their first PPV card taping, this is amazing.

All markism about me being there aside, amazing deal for ROH and I will most certainly be wasting (as if its really wasting and not proudly spending) a good penny every 2 months to see the next show they bring to the table. All hail ROH!

Mike Johnson is reporting also that twelve wrestlers (not reported who) are officially under contracts more like WWE's/TNA's now. As well as that the PPV is two hours (potentially more/longer) much like WWE's and TNA's are currently. Heck, I don't blame you for marking out Matt, I was to a degree when I first read the news about this being on PPV.

Oh, and word is that unlike Homicide, Austin Aries will not be unable to appear on the PPV due to his TNA contract. (As the TNA contract prevents him from being on TV for another company as Austin Starr, not the Aries persona. Thus why Homicide, unless he changes his ring name for the show, will not be featured on it.)

Edited Note: The video announcement for this that is up over on Youtube features No Remorse Corp (Roderick Strong, Davey Richards, Rocky Romero), Jay & Mark Briscoe, Bryan Danielson, Delirious, Takeshi Morishima, Nigel McGuinness, BJ Whitmer, Claudio Castagnoli, Brent Albright and Erick Stevens in it. So perhaps twelve out of that 13 are the ones that signed the contracts (I would assume due to Morishima's home ties to NOAH would be the only one out of that lot unable to sign this type of contract.)

While I know it is generally frowned upon to double post, I just figured I'd add this...

There will be some slight production upgrades for the PPV events, which are expected to be priced in the $10-$15 range, dependent on the carrier.

from PWinsider

The productions on RoH have been pretty awesome as of late, so a further upgrade? That's alright in my book, since they already looked better than the hokey productions TNA has. And that price tag isn't too bad in my opinion, a lot better than what WWE is charging now a days.

Just so everyone knows. Davey Richards is an asshole roid junkie. I saw him at a local grocery store in Washington and said hey. He just glared at me and walked on. He is the head trainer for AWA Pinnacle Wrestling here in Washington and is familiar with me.

I happen to run a fan site for Pinnacle Wrestling and posted about the way he reacted to me. He then banned me from all Pinnacle shows. What a TWAT!

Yeah, now we'll forever have to hear about stupid Matt's stupid Ring of Honor show that he stupidly gets to go to. You know what I say Matt? Screw you, man, you suck!

Haha, just kidding. It's a running joke to be an ass and tell me about all the shows he's going to. *shakes fist* Ya wily coyote.

And this is definitely going to be an interesting series of events for ROH. That sucks about Davey, Steve, you should go to an AWA show and hold up a sign, "Davey Likes the Roids."

I hear the contracts are more of holds on wrestlers preventing them from dashing and running to TNA/WWE. I hear it clearly allows all ROH wrestlers to appear at any indy show and any indy DVD, but is more of a safe hold. Quite showing Gabe learns from Heyman's mistakes.

"You want to go to WWE/TNA? Fine you need to properly inform us first and we'll grant you your release, but you can't appear on WWE/TNA the next night without informing us about it first and allowing us to write you off/do whatever for the PPVs." Smart move by Gabe.

Also 10-15 bucks is a perfect price as DVDs are 20 + shipping. This gives you more incentive to buy the PPV and even the DVD if you like it a lot.

Sucks to hear that Steve, I'm not the biggest Davey fan but he is quite impressive, but sometimes you never know how people are truly outside the ring.

Kyle = jealous! That's all I gotta say about that.

Also, if I'm not mistaken ROH will need to cut from the shows anyways for the PPV, so more than likely (its sad but true) we'll see Homicide as Homicide but they won't tape it for the PPV. He'll essentially be in a dark match on all the PPVs unless he works something out with TNA or gets caught in the middle of contract warfare.

Also they'll probably be cutting entrances for time constraints and for copyright reasons unless they start getting some deals with some bands.

Lastly, I can totally see good things to come of this, production increases are great, and hopefully some announcing improvements too. If not live ring-side announcing, maybe a different partner for Prazak, I don't mind him and Lenard but many can't stand them.

Actually, ECW used to use bands' songs on their television and PPVs, so, RoH could in theory use them. (Then again, Heyman knew so many legal loop holes, he could get away with it.)

And Gabe worked with Heyman, so I'm sure he has some ideas around it.

Prazak And Lenard are awesome thank you very much! Goota love the DAAAAAAAAANNNNNNGEROUUSHHHHHH!!! screams lol.

Back onto subject though, I hope they don't get to cocky though or worse lower the scale of action, that's my only fear, if they don't, I could see HUGE things coming from it.

Then, it happens...

Quote:

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling informed Ring of Honor today that effective immediately, all TNA contracted talents have been pulled from scheduled and future ROH bookings.

With the departure of Christopher Daniels last week, that would mean that former ROH champions Homicide and Austin Aries are no longer be allowed to appear at Ring of Honor events and are already done with the company.

The expected ROH return of Samoa Joe later this year, which was foreshadowed when Joe defeated current ROH champion Takeshi Morishima the night before Morishima won the title, is also off the books.

TNA made the call ROH's announcement yesterday that they signed a deal to begin airing taped PPV events on 7/1. The first PPV will be taped on 5/12 in New York City at the Manhattan Center.

TNA sources acknowledged that the decision will likely upset ROH fans, but felt they had no choice after learning about ROH's PPV expansion yesterday via the Internet. There's no word why the pulled talents couldn't appear on matches that wouldn't be aired on the taped PPV events.

ROH booker Gabe Sapolskly declined comment on the situation when contacted this morning, but given the way the ROH storylines have phased out TNA performers, this likely was not an unexpected move.

Sucks, but I saw it coming as soon as the announcement of the PPV came. Wish Aries and Homicide could've both gotten a proper send off, but eh. Also TNA has pulled TNA talent (Joe, Daniels, ect) from PWG from this point fourth, seems like they are starting to get nervous.

I mark this as the beginning of TNA's WCWesque downfall.

Oh, oh. Plus, PWG on teh PPVs would be sexy.

Yeah, I'm with Wighty on this one, TNA is going downhill and breaking all ties with many of the major independent promotions is what will kill TNA IMO. Where do you get new talent if you don't have the major indy promotions to rely on? Why from WWE rejects of course!

This was only expected and from hearing this makes me proud I've given up TNA all the more. I've been watching strictly ECW and of course my usual indy DVDs, and I'm glad I'm only doing so.

Oh, and Elrick, you really are that far behind/don't keep up with ROH aren't you? Jimmy Bower (Gabe) was the one who shouted "Dangerous!!!!" not Lenard, Bower (Gabe) hasn't done a match in almost a year. :D Buy some up-to-date DVDs you tit!

Edit: Oh, and although its only wishful thinking, depending on contract loopholes and basically just good faith and hope, maybe Aries will give the royal 'F-You' to TNA and still work ROH, also maybe Joe will when his contract is up come back to give his royal 'F-You'. If not that, here is hoping the PPV opens with big surprises and big happenings that shows TNA and even WWE to a sense (since I consider WWE a different league than TNA/ROH) how to run a great PPV.

Now all that's left is to wait for Bryan Danielson's glorious return. After that, Takeshi Morishima loses his title and the best wrestler in the world regains it.

Here is a few interesting news bits from the Newswire RoH put up today. Looks like my guess on who the original twelve were might've been spot on, plus they've added more.

As well as that is the talent line up so far for the up coming PPV. Great to see Dragon returning, and all the RoH champs on the show. While I'm sure a lot of people (those that follow RoH least) will be excited about KENTA & 'Fuji being on the show. I'm also glad to see Sara Del Ray & Haze on it, since I think they could put on a pretty solid match together. (And it wouldn't be like any thing casual fans of wrestling or WWE fans have ever seen, even before the "toning down" WWE has taken.)

My view from last night seated in 4th row. Granted during show some heads were in the way and we went from seated to standed plenty of times, but it was an amazing night. Top to bottom was a solid show, sadly wasn't as great as everyone was hyping it to be, but a great undercard held up by a solid main event plus the PPV/heat/hype it was an amazing night that should look good on PPV/DVD.

Only downfall was the Shimmer Match and Roderick/Delirious. Shimmer match was just after intermission and neither Del Rey or Haze got over at all. And the Roddy/Delirious match followed a very fast pace Tag Team Scramble match so it lacked and went on too long. Plus drunk New Yorkers sitting behind me didn't help the fact as they were heckling both of them all match. However the bright part is Roddy focused his reactions on our side of the crowd as we were the loudest and flipped him off the most.

ME was great in terms of having that big match intensity. It wasn't as great as it could've been, but definitely highlighted ROH's main event scene. During one of Dragon's promos or his entrance, when facing my side of the crowd I pointed to my Bryan Danielson t-shirt and he looked right at me which made me feel cool cause he pretty much acknowledged it.

Also the guy sitting right next to me who I talked to throughout the night and once on the ROH message board before hand when I saw he was sitting next to me, started the "Nigel's gonna get his fucking head kicked in" chant for Danielson and we all went with it and that should come off great.

Homicide's surprise farewell speech was great and not sure if that'll even make the DVD but I know it definitely won't make the PPV.

Having Dave Prazak start the PPV-portion of the show off and later do a promo following the Briscoes match with Lenny Lenard was great as it put faces to the announcers and introduces them to the PPV crowd.

Also to start the show with a ROH Title match squash (BJ Whitmer got fucked up by Morishima) was a major way to gain him heel heat and get the crowd going quickly.

The crowd was hot all night really, and big matches that pretty much stole the show that you wouldn't expect were:

- Rocky Romero vs. Marafuji
- Claudio (w/ new haircut) & Matt Sydal vs. The Briscoes [for the tag titles]
- Steen & Generico vs. Irish Airborne vs. Pelle & Mitch vs. Rave & Pearce [Tag Team Scramble]

Overall amazing show, definitely not ROH or even ROH in NYC's best, but a solid card up and down with only one or two matches that might not come off well on DVD/PPV.
