What are some of your favorite rewal life Wrestling Promos and why? This is gonna be a fun topic.

I'll start with Dusty Rhodes - Hard Times. Its a bad ass promo and when I was younger going through my own hard times that promo would keep me pushing.

Name one and why and pass it to the next person.

For hilarity, or just to get a smile on my face after a rough shift at work, the Rock, Hogan, and Kane backstage promo. It's not the best, I know, but as I said it's enough to make me smile. :)

As in the case of intensity, Vince's empty arena interview with Jimmy Snuka was certainly that in my opinion.

I know I have more, but they'll have to wait until I get them all down and such. :)

Good thread.

My personal favourites:

Bray Wyatt to Hulk Hogan & John Cena, although there was so many good Bray Wyatt promos about Cena around that time you could take your pick.

Mick Foley, for which I have three that immediately spring to mind. The first is the Terry Funk one where he talks about Funk wanting more money to appear, the dark ECW one where he talked about the girl that didn't love him back and finally the TNA one where interviewed Cactus Jack.

Fuck, forgot the one where he turned heel following WrestleMania 14.

A couple offhand...

William Regal on Hulkamania and William Regal on Triple H show a level of continuity to Regal's character that is rarely seen in the WWE. Even with the top level guys, nevermind someone lower on the pecking order like Regal. Plus they have the added bonus of just great promos.

A great one is a bit more recent. In the one of the NXT lead-in to the match promo segments, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens both do a really good job selling the story. Owens has the hard job of doing some more subtle things to sell his role as the bitter, envious ex-friend. But Zayn straddles the line well of avoiding being hokey with his babyface fire too.

A great sequel is the confrontation segment afterwards. It feels like two friends that have burned each other, with Owens even looking almost reluctant.

Goldust has done a lot of promos I've enjoyed over the years. And, I'm glad that it seems like a return to form has come for the character.

A promo I feel like gets overlooked is actually the Piper's Pit with Cena. Both guys do wonderful in it, and it was something of a return to form for Piper because his promos in his twilight had become long & a lot of the time incoherent. This really sells the John Cena character in a way few things have and showed some awareness on the WWE's part to the formula they returned to with Cena for their top face.

Speaking of that formula, arguably it being done the best it's ever been done and in also arguably one of the best contract signing segments ever, here's Hulk Hogan & Andre the Giant's Contract Signing. A simple segment that by doing "nothing" has a steep tension to it and both sell their characters so well. Hogan as the heartbroken friend, Andre as the scorned beast with a weasel in his ear manipulating his insecurities.

Randy Savage is one of my absolute favorites of all time, and he's had a laundry list of amazing promos. But I think what still may be his best ever will be his promo in the lead-in to his match against Hulk Hogan. He literally spins the tale of the months leading up to it and, in true heel fashion, subtly does some rewrites to paint himself in the delusional light of the betrayed friend. Almost to the point where he has you believing him, if not for his psychosis being at an all time high. All because of a girl and Hogan's lustful eyes.

I'd have to really stop and think what's my favorite Jericho promo of all time if I were to decide that. Though I know my favorite from his serious heel run was his ladder promo. Shawn Michaels was always just such a perfect foil for him.

I liked Jake Roberts towards Randy Savage for Tuesday in Texas. You could throw a rock and hit any brilliant Jake promo though.

The others that stand out in my mind are Bret Hart turning heel following WrestleMania and Paul Heyman with Vince.

This is gonna be fun as shit to watch through later.

I've gotten a couple of new people into wrestling lately. E-fedding, as well. Sometimes you have to explain what a promo is. I always use this example, and then Steph's Wrestlemania 32 promo during HHH's entrance. Only YouTube video I could find sucks, look it up on the Network.

"There's no Hulkamaniacs here." I quote this in my daily life when people say "it's not hot"... or anytime they just look around confused.

CM Punk's pipe bomb.

Kevin Sullivan Summons The Purple Haze The Dusty Rhodes fireball that follows was cool too, but Dai turned me onto this shit a few years ago. Legendary.

Y'know, it's weird that after Punk left I don't remember a lot of people in the modern era even doing, like... FIRE promos. Enzo and Cass and the New Day are reliably fun. Cena had some pretty good ribs on The Miz leading up to WM this year, but it wasn't anything we hadn't heard before. By contrast, I remember the stuff Stone Cold, The Rock, Mankind, and DX doing was... like... ALWAYS entertaining and interesting. And that's just the top stuff off the top of my head... hell, even when Punk WAS around... the overall quality of the show's promos just wasn't there.

... *adds another piece to the puddle of why he doesn't care for WWE as much as he used to*

Yeah, there's more standing in the ring and having back & forths like a conversation than necessarily straight up promos.

Even when you get backstage promos, it's done in more of a conversation style. The format loses some impact too because of Kevin Dunn & Vince McMahon's insistence in the new era that no one can look directly into the camera besides the interviewer. All talent must always be adjacent to it.

Honestly, it was so jarring and surprising when Goldust did just that in that new promo. And, it speaks volumes to me that that segment is being essentially universally praised on the net as refreshing and feeling more "real" than a lot of modern promos.

It's cheesy, but eyes are important. Eye contact is very important when talking. And, it really can make a difference. Imagine some of those classic promos that were posted if the wrestler didn't look at the camera or acknowledge it in some way.

One I really like but can't find video of is Lex Luger's promo right before he wrestles Arn Anderson at Halloween Havoc 1996. That was the point Luger decided he was done fucking around trying to make nice with everyone, and he was annoyed at WCW being more concerned with the Horsemen than they were the nWo, so he wants to make an example of Arn Anderson and proceeds to first say "I'm not only gonna' beat you, I'm not only gonna' rack you, I'm going to take you out and I'm going to hurt you."

And then he proceeds to just fuck Arn's whole day up. Beats him down, uses a chair, Racks him and sends him out on a stretcher. Demonstrates Luger when he's no longer holding back and 'just happy to be here'.

I always have a soft spot for those promos that signal a turning point in the character. Another one would be Shawn Michaels before his Unsanctioned match against Jericho where he says "I hope someday God will forgive me for what I'm going to do", and "no matter what accomplishments you have, you still don't have peace", and my favorite line HBK has ever uttered, "Someday you'll sit your wife down and your kids down and tell them Daddy will NEVER be Shawn Michaels". That moment just utterly neutered Jericho because it told the audience what this was all about--Jericho was obsessed with being HBK, not being better than him.

One i love is CM Punks "Pipe Bomb" promo he did. Weather it was a worked shoot or whatever i really loved it and thought it felt genuine. He really inspired me with that and his whole shtick.

Wight's reliably brought the Sullivan love, so here's Nick Bockwinkel; who I might have borrowed a little from over the years.

Flair was pretty good, too in the early 80's, before he settled into his schtick.

I agree with Wight for the most part that we don't have an really hot promos now because they are all scripted crap.. The only one I can think of that I like now is The Miz. After the worked shoot promo he did on Talking Smack and since then that has become his gimmick of some sort. He shoots on people. I think he is pur best promo right now and thats kinda sad cus Ambrose should be allowed to fire off on the mic but hes stuck with their scripted bullshit. His program with Dolph was great and leading up to their title for career match the promos were good. I liked that one promo him and Cena did together as well. That was great. But besides that we get scripted generic Roman Reigns promos

Then let's go back, waaaaay back with Harley Race. It's a good segment that isn't just Race selling himself, but the position of world champion.

Bumping an old thread because I've wanted to discuss this one for awhile.

Eons ago, I went deep diving on Arn Anderson promos, and I found one that was just so... badass. So, so badass. And, I've got to admit, if you want to ding me for plagarism, you can go ahead. But I found this promo so badass and so awesome I pretty much ripped it off for a Lucas & Silas promo (Metal on Metal from Anarchy in the UK'15). And between the concept, the timing, the opponents, the one liners about metal, it's straight up my most favorite wrestling promo-styled roleplay I've written with the Bergerons (I still go back and reread it from time to time).

So, Arn Anderson & Barry Windham (who I've never really recognized as a great promo, but he's awesome in this) are training for their match against DOOM... in a junk yard. Smashing beat up cars with sledgehammers (I bet Triple H watches this promo with his pants off).

So they talk about stuff.

And then Barry talks. "Tell no lies."

And Arn.

Just gives this glare that says "I'm going to eat your soul."

And he says with such quiet badass-ery:

"Get in touch with your emotions.

Find out what your worst phobia is.

I want everyone affiliated with WCW... to prepare themselves... for armageddon."

I get chills every time.

Arn Anderson & Barry Windham promo on Doom pt. 1

edit: Also, I love some NWA-era road Warriors. I stole that shit all the time. "TONY SCHIAVONE, DON'T YOU LOOK SWELLLLLLLLLL TODAY! OH BOY!" (Well, I didn't steal it, per se. But in Bayou Business I had Lucas say that and Grimm tried to keep a straight face but just couldn't, and Lucas was like "I'm not watching old wrestling with you anymore." So, I guess it's a steal, but it's acknowledged as such. :P

Jimmy, good to see you first things first.

Second, I just saw an awesome Arn promo from Great American Bash, before the Horsemen vs. Mongo/Kevin Greene tag. Right after Benoit/Sullivan, Arn talks about the Four Horsemen and says "The people respect a group that will not only say what they're gonna do, they go through that curtain and DO IT."

And then before he gives the floor to Benoit and Flair, just gives this look of disdain and says "Football players! Ya' want a visual aid? You just got it."
