This is a match writing tutorial or template that might help our swelling number of writers. One of the hardest parts of my ‘job’ (I hate that phrase, I’m purely a custodian whose function is to pass FIW over to somebody else better suited when the time comes) is putting the shows together. There’s a lot of fiddly stuff with coding and checking spacing etc. So the idea of this topic is to share my expectation and a template to take away. All writers are free to use this each week to ensure we have consistency in the shows and it retains a lack of editing for me to do.

The basic template is as follows:

Code:

[b]JH:[/b][color=00A2FF] “INSERT COMMENTARY.[/color]

[b]CM:[/b][color=00A2FF] “INSERT COMMENTARY”[/color]

MATCH OPENING PARAGRAPH

[b]JH:[/b][color=00A2FF] “INSERT COMMENTARY”[/color]

[b]CM:[/b][color=00A2FF] “INSERT COMMENTARY”[/color]

MATCH CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH

[b]JH:[/b][color=00A2FF] “INSERT COMMENTARY”[/color]

[b]CM:[/b][color=00A2FF] “INSERT COMMENTARY”[/color]

CLOSING PARAGRAPH IF YOU NEED IT

And that’s it. Seems pretty simple when presented like that? Hopefully it is. For anybody who just wants to lift that and get on with it, you are absolutely welcome. What I’ll do is just break it down a bit further to pass on some hints/tips/ideas. This might get a bit messy so bear with me.

The match opens with the header from the card. Don’t worry about this, I paste that in. A couple of days before the show goes up usually around deadline time I put a document together containing the card flipped around (opening match at the top, main event at the bottom). That just allows me to drop matches and promos in as necessary.

Code:

[b]JH:[/b][color=00A2FF] “INSERT COMMENTARY.[/color]

[b]CM:[/b][color=00A2FF] “INSERT COMMENTARY”[/color]

Following a request from Wight, we now include opening statements from the commentators. Don’t get too fixed to the order or that there’s only two lines, if you want more, add them. Wight for example often does a back and forth for four of more lines of commentary. This is to include storyline elements, cover anything breaking in the show or follow up from roleplays.

Code:

MATCH OPENING PARAGRAPH

[b]JH:[/b][color=00A2FF] “INSERT COMMENTARY”[/color]

[b]CM:[/b][color=00A2FF] “INSERT COMMENTARY”[/color]

The opening paragraph can contain references to entrances if you like, personally I save those for PPV’s but Rob likes to include them in his writing. The style of opening paragraph is more to your personal preference as a writer. I like to logically go through the individual actions and moves, others write more in terms of wrestling style and how the emphasis swings. Again, don’t get attached to that order - Hitch then Chip. If you want Chip then Hitch, go for it. If you want to add more lines of commentary in, that’s your prerogative.

Code:

MATCH CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH

[b]JH:[/b][color=00A2FF] “INSERT COMMENTARY”[/color]

[b]CM:[/b][color=00A2FF] “INSERT COMMENTARY”[/color]

CLOSING PARAGRAPH IF YOU NEED IT

The last leg of our journey is the match conclusion. Often the finishes are the biggest moment of the match and the lead up to it can contain several near falls or shenanigans. It’s important here to make the finish clear as often this leads into the angles and storylines coming out of the show. The commentary lines again are coded (and do check out the spaces, I haven’t included on between the bolding and the colouring) but again don’t feel married to that order or that number of lines.

I’ve included a closing paragraph as often things happen after a match ends, such a Champion celebrating or somebody mounting an after-match assault. Especially with so many characters having managers, this can provide an opportunity for them to influence proceedings.

So put all that together and you get the overall template above. I hope that all helps match writers, especially the coding with the commentators. For PPV’s and special shows (HalloweVolt springs to mind) we do switch to a unique colour so just ask for that but I will attempt to communicate prior.
