Concerning Corona; Introducing Tequila Mockingbird

[The scene opens in a seedy neighborhood of Mexico City, apparently during some kind of celebration. Children run through the streets, setting off fireworks, playing games and singing songs – much more in tune than the drunken carols emanating from the bars, which are overflowing with working class Mexicans seeking a little escape from their dreary lives. Out from one of these bars walks El Lobo Loco, sipping on a beer (a Corona, what else?) and looking even surlier than usual. He shoves another intoxicated patron out of the doorway as he leaves, his mask and physique apparently enough intimidation to prevent a fight from breaking out.

The camera follows alongside Lobo as he makes his way down the street, stumbling lazily, stopping here and there to hug the walls and get his senses back. The shops he passes are mostly the common fare – bookstores, video rental places, small grocery markets… But one building at the end of the block stands out from the rest. It is smaller and seems darker, the exterior painted a very deep and glossy black. A neon sign, dim and slowly slipping farther into death, radiates from above the door, flickering the very simple, mysterious: “Fortune.”

Lobo, his mask twitching with intrigue, lets out a small laugh and downs the rest of his beer. Tossing the bottle over his shoulder, it smashes against concrete out of frame. He heads up to the door and swings it open with a pull that is a little harder than necessary.

Inside, the building looks just as creepy as it did outside. There is barely any light at all, and what little there is illuminates bookshelves full of occult texts, skulls in various conditions and what look like ceremonial statues and pottery done in an Aztec style. A snake slithers across the top of a table in the center of the main room, which is covered in dust and what look like Tarot cards.]

Lobo: Hola? Anyone here?

[For a moment there is only silence. And then, very suddenly, a match is struck and candles lit. The new light shows that there is another person in the room… A slim, slender figure wearing the mask of a skeleton standing in the corner. At first, Lobo is not sure if it is another part of the scenery or actually a person, so he takes a few steps toward it…]

Figure: BOO!

[Lobo actually flinches, which produces much laughter from the figure. The mask is thrown off, revealing a skinny Mexican woman with a sharp, angular face wearing black robes. Her long, night-black hair flows down her back the length of her spine and a tiny mole dots the bottom of her left cheek. She takes a seat at the table and motions for Lobo to do the same, which he does.]

Woman: We all like masks. Hiding your identity can be fun. Fortunately for you, I won’t hide mine. I’m Tequila Mockingbird, fortune-teller and mistress of the occult.

Lobo: So what do you do, Senora… Mockingbird? Besides standing in the corner and waiting to randomly scare customers.

Tequila: (laughing) Who says the dark arts have to be depressing? We all like to be creative and have our fun. And for all your seriousness, Senor Lobo, we all know that you enjoy your matches and your innovation.

Lobo: You watch wrestling?

Tequila: Lucha libre is what inspired me to become what I am today. I figured, why follow the easy path and become somebody normal? What not dare to be a hero, a villain, an occult master, a vampire… A crazy wolf…

Lobo: Yes, but I can actually wrestle. Can you really tell fortunes?

Tequila: But of course. And I tell you that it is your destiny to face Max Corona one more time.

Lobo: Corona? That puto? Why? I defeated him handily in the ring before. He rants and raves and makes challenges, but why bother thinking about him when I have a chance to defeat Kuriyama and prove that I am better than him beyond any shadow of a doubt?

Tequila: Is this all that you are interested in, Lobo? Beating Kuriyama? Winning a belt? Your victory over Corona wasn’t pure. He was sick, unable to compete to his full ability. You did not beat the true Max Corona that night, but a hollow shell of what he is.

Lobo: Great. I come all the way back to Mexico City, try to have a good time and end up being worked by another Corona groupie. Why do women like him anyway? He is obviously not the most macho man to ever grace a FIW ring. He is not even competent enough to deserve my attention.

Tequila: Life is a ladder, Lobo. You must climb one rung at a time. You will face Kuriyama this Thursday and afterward, you must take on Corona again, regardless of whether you win or lose against Kuriyama.

Lobo: I won’t lose!

Tequila: Oh no? Who reads the fortunes here?

Lobo: If you can really see what’s going to happen, tell me if I’m going to beat Kuriyama or not!

Tequila: What, and spoil it for everyone else? Some things should just not be known. And some things should not be known because FIW employs a rather large legal department.

Lobo: I’m not impressed. Can you at least tell me how to beat him?

Tequila: Well, you beat him before, didn’t you? Granted, he beat you too. Just remember that it’s hard to hit something you can’t catch. Don’t let yourself to be trapped by the Sex Machine Gun and you should be fine. Take to the air and all shall unfold as it should.

Lobo: Wow, gracias. You have a real Zen-meets-creepy girl thing going on. I hope you’re not going to be charging me for this garbage…

Tequila: (laughing) No, the service is free of charge. Believe it or not, Lobo, I’m a fan. And regardless of the outcome on Thursday, you’re still going to stand above the rest and be hailed as a hero by your fellow Mexicans. You have come so far and done so much, starting with so little. Your passion, determination and pride speaks for everyone in this country, and the fans will realize that. Whether you’re fighting Kuriyama or Corona… They’re going to watch you. In fact… I’ll be watching you…

[Tequila lets out a long chortle as the lights blow out, although there isn’t any wind coming into the building. Stuck again in the darkness, Lobo curses as he heads straight to the door, flinging it open and heading back out into the darkness…]
