Scene opens on Sam walking up toward Toby, who looks to have been sitting outside of her dressing room for a while now. He stands as she approaches and smiles at her. Toby: I’ve been waiting on you to get back. Sam: Why? Toby: Have you seen the card for the pay-per-view? Sam: Yeah, same old match me and Torrie and Elrick for my title. I’ve won it every time I go against them, so I’m not expecting any different. Nothing to really say about it I guess. Toby: Ahh, I had hoped that you would be up to talking trash about one of them. Sam: Uhh…Torrie is a sad excuse for a human being but everyone knows that’s what I think of her. Elrick has potential but he is too busy being beat up by his woman. Sam shrugs. Sam: Sorry I don’t have more for you. I’m just tired of the same thing week after week, you’d think they’d be getting better, learning my moves and things like that. But they don’t. It almost seems like they don’t care. Toby: So, uhh…How’s things with Bill? Sam smiles and opens her mouth to respond to Toby’s question when a sharp ring interrupts whatever it was she was going to say. Her and Toby look at each other with the look that says ‘is that yours or mine’. Sam reaches in her pocket and sees that it is in fact her phone. Sam: Damn…hold on a sec, I have to answer this. Sam flips open the phone and makes her voice as cheery as possible. Sam: Hi Daddy! Sam immediately pulls the phone a bit away from her ear after the greeting, a mans voice can clearly be heard coming out the ear piece and we all understand why she did that. He talks very loudly. Daddy Kinloch: Hey sweetie! How you been doin? Toby looks at the camera and whispers at it. Toby: Ohh, a rare moment. Father and daughter interaction. Sam: I’m good. Just found out I’ll be on the pay-per view this week. It’s my first time and I'm kinda excited about that. How are you and Mom? Daddy Kinloch: That’s wonderful! Momma and I are doin great, but we needed to talk to you about something. Toby: Could this be serious? Or is he just wondering why she has not called home in a while. Lets watch and find out. Sam manages to give Toby a dirty look while responding to her father. Sam: Is it something wrong? Are you sure that you and Mom are doing alright? I could send home some extra— Sam gets cut off by the loud man. Daddy Kinloch: No, no. It’s nothing like that! Sam: Okay, soooo what’s up? Daddy Kinloch: Well, you know that your Mom and I don’t watch the show much, what with the way we work and your Momma bein so against it. She’s warming up though, actually caught her watching a commercial the other day without that sour look on her face. Anyhow… Sam leans her back on the wall and slides down to a sitting position while her father screams in her ear. Toby does the same and “his” cameraman squats with them. Toby: Looks like this could be a long conversation. Daddy Kinloch: …We did manage to catch a show, two weeks ago I think it was. Allen was over and he watches every week. He’s seeing someone new, seems like a nice boy too. Name’s Terry I think…He was really amazed that Allen’s little sister is a wrestler, your Mom broke out the old picture album. It was a good time. Sam: Daddy… Daddy Kinloch: Oh yeah, sorry sweetie got all distracted. I just wanted to talk to you about that boy you seem to be dating. Is that story line or are you really dating him? Toby’s eyes grow wide and he looks back to the camera. Toby: Mr. Kinloch just called The Sex Machine Gun a boy! It seems we have found our problem, but lets go back to the action. Sam rolls her eyes at Toby’s running commentary. Sam: He’s name is Bill, and it’s not a storyline Daddy. We’re really dating. None of what you’ve seen has been scripted, that’s just what happens. Daddy Kinloch: Ohh, Bill that’s right. We couldn’t remember his name. Sweetie, you know how your Mom and I feel about – This time Sam is the one doing the cutting. Sam: Everyone I’ve ever even shown interest in? Let me guess, you and Mom are mad because he’s not what you had planed for me? You want me to be with some, suit wearing, nine to five kind of guy? Toby again whispers to the camera. Toby: Buuuurrrrrrnnn. Sam hears this and lightly smacks the back of his head. He turns and feigns hurt, Sam smiles and chokes back a laugh. Daddy Kinloch: Well, you’re right on some of that. We didn’t expect you to show interest in someone quite like him, that’s for sure. When we saw you two in bed together your Mom about fell off the couch. Sam: Sounds like Mom alright. Daddy Kinloch: Sweetie, don’t do that now. You and your Mom will work things out one of these days. Sam sighs. Daddy Kinloch: Couldn’t you have found someone like…Oh I don’t know…that fellow you went on a date with right before you left for FIW? Sam: Sean? No, you see he was only interested because he thought I’d take him with me while I was touring…like I do. That was all he was really interested in. Toby: It seems that Mr. Kinloch is not approving of Sam’s choice of dates lately, but isn’t that how it goes with fathers? They always seem to be so protective of their little girls- The hand of Sam appears on Toby’s mouth stopping him from his commentary, he looks at her and she moves her hand and makes the ‘shhhh’ motion with her hand then goes back to her father. Daddy Kinloch: You don’t know that. Sam: Yes, actually I do. Being that he told me. Daddy Kinloch: Oh, well then I guess you do. But back to this boy you’ve been seeing an awful lot. He’s just….not….what your Mom and I want to see you with. Sam: I know you’re trying to say something without actually having to say it. So lets just cut to the chase. What exactly is your problem with Bill? Daddy Kinloch seems put off by this and makes a lot of noises that lead us to believe that he is not sure exactly what to say to his daughter. Daddy Kinloch: He’s…black…and something else…I forget what it was. Sam’s eyes grow wide, she was clearly not expecting this to be her father’s problem with Bill. She was likely expecting there to be no real reason except that he is a wrestler and her parents don’t approve of that. Toby’s eyes also get wider and his mouth just sorta hangs open for a few seconds. Sam: Japanese, his Mom is black and his Dad is Japanese… Silence on the other line, Daddy Kinloch seems to know that his daughter has more to say but is waiting. Sam: I can’t believe you two! After all the counseling I went through, after all the shit in the papers about teaching kids tolerance, all the shit I went through in school. You two turn around and do the same thing! Daddy Kinloch: It’s not like that sweetie and you know it! Sam: No, it’s just exactly that! You and Mom are mad because I’m not dating some nice white boy, instead I chose a nice boy who just happens to be multi racial. You’re scared about what everyone else is going to think aren’t you?! Daddy Kinloch: A few of your Mom’s friends have said- Sam interrupts not wanting to hear this. Sam: I don’t want to hear this. I’m not going to stop dating Bill just because you and Mom don’t approve! Sam doesn’t bother to say anything else to her father, she just flips the phone closed and shuts it off. She then turns her attention back to Toby, who still looks shocked by what Sam’s father had to say. Sam: I’m not in the mood anymore Toby, I think you should go. Toby nods his head, gets up off the floor and walks away. The camera moves back to Sam who is still sitting on the floor. She bangs her head against the wall a few times then closes her eyes and lets her head roll to one side. She doesn’t appear to be moving anytime soon. Fade. |
