Go Back to Sleep
[ * * * ]
[The theater's curtains pull back to reveal the stage. There is a moment where nothing happens. Then a projector from off screen comes to life and casts an image of the Fighting Spirit Championship onto the set. It serves also as a spotlight to illuminate Desmond Crowley.]

Desmond Crowley: "My, what a tangled web we weave."

[Desmond says off the cuff. He is dressed in his usual white suit.]

Desmond Crowley: "Friendships imploding, a man on a mission to prove his worth."

[He waves his hand in a vague manner. Struggling to find the correct word he wants to use to describe it.]

Desmond Crowley: "It's all very...oh so dramatic."

[It's with his hand still hovering that he offers a one shoulder shrug.]

Desmond Crowley: "Do not misunderstand me. I empathize with the plight of some of the men that are in this match. It's an unfortunate circumstance when friendships go sour. It is all the more unfortunate when they go grotesque in nature, due to some insecurities one party has."

[He waves his hand to dismiss the notion he's belittling anyone.]

Desmond Crowley: "I even understand wanting to hurt the other man in kind. It's only human nature to want to make the person in question feel a similar pain to the one they made you feel. To take something from them that matters after they've taken the friendship that mattered oh so much to you."

[There's not an ounce of judging in his voice.]

Desmond Crowley: "Much like it's only human nature to want to fix your bruised ego."

[The shift in his voice is subtle. But it's there enough to note we're not on the same subject anymore.]

Desmond Crowley: "Afterall, you were hoping so much for a grand return with fanfare when you answered an innocent challenge. It's acceptable to be frustrated when things didn't go quite as you had hoped with that. I'm sure many wouldn't want such a thing to end with them scatter brained and needing big brother to save them."

[Crowley gets a cheeky smile when he says that last part. That's definitely a jab.]

Desmond Crowley: "And, then your chance to fix such a mistake ends with us certainly getting a definitive ending between you two."

[He entangles his hands together and rests them in front of himself.]

Desmond Crowley: "Just not the one you wanted. Again."

[He feels the need to emphasize that "again".]

Desmond Crowley: "Though I wouldn't take that one too much to heart, there were four other people in that match. It wasn't as if it was a return engagement between you two."

[Crowley sounds genuine in his attempt in console Lucas.]

Desmond Crowley: "Now you are once again facing Nemesis, albeit with two others in the match. And, you're going so far as to try to make deals to get it so that you two are left alone. So desperate to prove that you can do what you've failed to do thus far."

[He tilts his head, questioning the line of thinking that's led Lucas to this.]

Desmond Crowley: "I would be lying if I said that he doesn't have any interest in you too. He's enjoyed your tussles and I'm sure in any other match he would have his focus steered into solely your direction."

[Desmond bobs his head in indecision. Unsure how he feels about the Lucas & Nemesis situation.]

Desmond Crowley: "However the error that his opponents are making is something I'm confident in saying he's avoided. He sees the forest through the trees."

[Crowley releases the clasp he has on his own hands and outstretches his arms to the sides of him. Lights cast down to reveal an image of Mark Cannon to his right and an image of Nemesis to his left.]

Desmond Crowley: "All of your attention on your friend turned sworn enemy. But you have to get through three other men to get to him. Three other men that are by no means slouches when they step into that ring. You have to ensure the chance to face your rival doesn't slip through your fingers."

[The light casting itself on the faux Mark Cannon dims.]

Desmond Crowley: "And, all of your attention on the beast that's appeared onto the scene in a flash. So wrapped up in your ego, in your goal to prove you can hang with him. You're missing the bigger picture, the bigger picture that could slip right through the cracks. The bigger picture that ideally the other two men in this match will be fighting for too."

[The light casting itself on the faux Nemesis dims. It's a dramatic turn that brings Desmond to point at the image of the FSC cast against the far wall.]

Desmond Crowley: "So caught up in all of your personal and petty squabbles to realize, THIS is where the focus should be! It's where Nemesis' focus is. On the goal to defeat the three of you. On the goal to become the number one contender. On the goal to earn an opportunity at this."

[After a moment of passion, he throws up his hands and calms himself.]

Desmond Crowley: "Far be it from me to tell you how to run your lives."

[Desmond goes about as close to an apology as Johnny & Lucas are probably going to get out of him.]

Desmond Crowley: "But while you are seeing red, John and you are seeing green, Lucas..."

[His lips twist into a knowing smirk.]

Desmond Crowley: "Nemesis will be seeing gold."

[End.]
