It's about 20 minutes after Cannon left behind Raine. The sudden downpour has stopped. Mark is limping down the sidewalk, drenched to the bone. He walks into the street, drops to his knees and vomits his guts out. He tries to stand again and narrowly avoids getting hit by a car. The driver shouts obscenities as Mark makes it back to the sidewalk. Cannon: Almost there...Almost there... He slips into a nearby alley way and pops a pill. He climbs up on the dumpster and jumps onto the buildings fire escape, almost killing himself in the process. Cannon: You ever get the feeling everyone wants to kill you? He pulls himself over the railing and collapses on the metal floor. A light flickers on somewhere. A dog barks. Cannon: I'm used to it by now. Johnny. Raine. Cody. Lucas. Sakura. Brittany. Erik. The list literally goes on and on and on and on.... He climbs to the next level of the fire escape, barely able to keep up his strength. Cannon: You know, I used to get letters from kids. Little gay kids who had never seen someone like me on their TVs before. They drew pictures, I should show them to you sometime. Me riding Unicorns, wearing a Superman costume, punching bullies in the face. Kids who told me I gave them strength....that I stopped them from hurting themselves. He reaches the third level. Only two more to go. Cannon: I don't get those letters anymore. But...but I got this one just last week. Here. He hoists himself on the railing and reaches into his back pocket. He takes out a letter that has clearly been read over and over again. Cannon: "Dear Mr. Cannon, My son loved you. He's bullied every day in school because his voice is too high. Seeing you be who you are and take down the bullies made him happier than I'd ever seen him before. Then you gave it up. You became everything he hates: a bully, a traitor, a bad man. All so you could wear a stupid belt. You taught him that selling out who you really are is cool. You told him hurting your friends would get you ahead. Well, let me tell you. He brought a baseball bat to school, and broke a bully's knees with it. I'm not saying it's your fault...but I blame you. I really do. I hope you don't sleep, Mr. Cannon. I don't know how you can." Mark tucks the letter back in his pocket. He resumes his climb to the fourth level. Cannon: I keep that letter on me at all times. To remember what I gave up...what I did for this belt. I gutted me life, Erik. I looked at the people who cared about me most and spit in their faces. I turned my back to my fans like they were nothing. I betrayed everything I believed in for this. I hollowed myself out, scooped out my insides and turned myself into a husk. There's nothing left in here, Erik. There's no love, no honor, no respect. There's only drive. There's only fight. There's only this belt. He gets to the fourth level and looks in a window. An old woman sits in a rocker watching Jeopardy. Cannon: The majority of people go through their lives achieving nothing. One day I think I'll look back be disgusted with myself. But today's not that day. He reaches the fifth level, he's almost on the roof. He takes small bag of powder out of his pocket and smears some of it on his teeth. Cannon: I know I deserve every punch from you Erik. Every bruise, every black eye, every broken bone you throw my way. I deserve every kick, every powerbomb, every spear. So do your worst. Rip open my skin, pluck out my eyes, tear the muscle from the bone, I'll just lay their numb. Because no amount of pain you inflict on me will even come close to healing you. You want to believe you're the white hat in this fight, Erik? You want to let the world know that you're standing up for all those "square pegs?" I used to think I did that. I used to think I was actually making a difference for those misfits and queers. He climbs up onto the roof of the building and stares up at the sky. Cannon: Then I woke up. I realized I could beat every last man in the world and they still wouldn't accept me. I could become the greatest wrestler I could and still not win a belt. So I took matters into my own hands. I flayed away the weakness and left the machine. Now I can screw, hurt, and destroy without batting an eye. I'm a mechanical killer. I'm a Guillotine, an Electric Chair...a God. And the reason you hate me so much, Erik? You'd love to be just like me. He levels his eyes at the horizon. The streets below are empty. Cannon: You'd love to take your humanity, shove it in a box and bury it. You'd love to do anything for what you wanted most. You'd love to not have your weak little conscious nagging at you. Imagine a mind without depression, without anxiety, without the nagging suspicion you'll never amount to anything. I conquered all that. I pushed it deep down to a place where it couldn't hurt me anymore. He keeps his eyes on the horizon. Cannon: What have I got, Erik? What have I got... He takes a few steps back. Cannon: This belt is the only thing I have, Erik. Without it, I know I'm nothing. Without it, I know I'm just another punk yelling at the sky for respect. So believe when I say that you'll need to chop off every single one of my fingers to take it from me. He takes a runner's stance and closes his eyes. Cannon: I'm more than a fighter, Erik. I'm a survivor. I am a bully. I am a tyrant. I am a God. I am a betrayer. I am a repulsive, sick, sick, sick, sick, sick, sick, sick, sick, sick, sick man. His head pops up, and he dashes. Right towards the edge of the building, towards the street, towards the fall, towards the rising sun. He's almost at the edge. Cannon: Stop me. End. |
