The scene opens on an image of Mark Cannon. It's probably not a recent image as he's the smiling, happy Mark Cannon from days ago and he's not wearing an expensive suit. As the camera pulls out, we find that the image is sat on a small table in the middle of a darkened room. The only light provided is from the television set off to the side that we can just get a glimpse of playing the Open Invitational that brought the Fighting Spirit Championship back to FIW. "I hate what you've become." That's the voice of Johnny Amazing. Shocker, I know. As the camera continues to draw back, we find that Johnny is sitting on a stool that has him looking over the image on the table. He's wearing his sleeveless hoodie (with the hood up and obscuring the majority of his face in shadows. "A man that discards his family. Discards his friends. Discards his own morals for what? A piece of gold? A man that no longer smiles unless it's at the misfortunes of others. A man that trusts no one and wants to hurt everyone." There's a barely audible sigh and a slight shakes of the hooded head. "No, that's not right. You're not a man at all, are you?" Johnny's head turns slightly, catching a glimpse of the television set off to the side. We see Mark Cannon beating the tar out of Jade (formerly Justice). Johnny shakes his head again. "Worse than that... I hate what you're turning me into." There's a sudden silence throughout the room. This is when you'd probably really notice that there is no volume coming from the television set. I would have mentioned it earlier, but it has more dramatic effect at this point. Because right now, it seems as if YOUR television set has lost its sound. But it isn't hasn't. "I don't recognize you anymore, Mark. And I'm afraid I'll stop recognizing myself soon." Johnny's head slumps a little lower than it already was. "I tried to be a man that believes in people. I wanted to be the man who would do for others without expecting anything in return. I thought I was a man who could survive what this business does to people." He takes a deep breath and he casts his eyes towards the television screen again. It's perfectly timed to Johnny shoving Mark aside and taking the vicious spear from Nemesis that almost cuts him in half. The image causes Johnny's head to slump back down to its recent position. "I believed in you, Mark. I thought you were a good person, but maybe from the beginning I never recognized who you are. Were you ever good? Did you ever care about me or Brittany? Did your sister ever matter to you? Was there ever anything you cared about more than winning, no matter the cost?" Johnny raises his head to ask these questions. His eyes burn into the camera lens with an almost desperate plea for answers that the camera lens can't provide. "I always wanted to be a winner, Mark. I always wanted to make it in this business. But you know how that went." A smile spreads on Johnny's face, but make no mistake about: there is nothing happy about this smile. I don't even know how you can call it a smile with as depressing as it looks. "Everybody knows how that went." There's another sigh and Johnny's smile goes away. His eyes drop back down to the picture of Mark. "I gave you every chance, Mark. Arguably more chances that anyone should have. I tried so hard to help you, to be your friend and you spat on me. Literally." Someone give points to the timing of this segment. Johnny glances back towards the television to see Mark Cannon celebrating with his Fighting Spirit Championship before spitting on Johnny at his feet. "I meant nothing to you. I know that now. I never mattered to you. Do you even know what my face looks like? Do you even see people anymore? Or is everybody just another faceless person for you to take out your personal shit on?" Johnny places his hands on the table and pushes himself up to a standing position. He glances at the television set again, and the match has started back from the beginning. I'm not sure how many times he's sat in this room watching it. "I've lost matches before. You know that. I've been called a loser. I've been laughed at. I've been told I'm not good enough. But nobody else has ever made me a victim. Not until you came along. And it makes me sick to my stomach that I let it happen. But do you know what makes me even more sick...?" Do you? Johnny waits patiently for you to answer, staring into the camera as if expecting an answer to come to him. "I don't know if I can become who I need to become to stop it from ever happening again." Almost defeated by this revelation, Johnny drops back down onto his seat. His body looks to lose its ability to support him and he slumps down with his elbows on the table. "I'm gonna try, though. I promise you that I am going to try." He very carefully picks up the picture of Mark Cannon off the table. Holding it up, he stares at it for a long moment, in absolute silence. "I don't recognize you anymore, Mark. Whether or not I ever did isn't even the issue now. It just makes it that much easier to make sure that when you leave that cage... nobody recognizes you." Johnny drops the picture and turns his eyes onto the camera. "I'm going to do it, Mark. I'm going to push myself to do what I have to. I'm going to finish this. I'm going to finish you. And the only thing that scares me is whether or not anybody will recognize me after I do what I have to." He pushes out one final, labored breath before the image goes black as if blown out like a candle. |
