Go Back to Sleep

[The old theater's curtains pull back and it's a rather subdue backdrop, save for the chains. The chains that go in every which direction like same archaic security system. In the center of the chains that go across, up & down, kiddy corner is Desmond Crowley. He isn't looking particularly comfortable in the chains tightly wrapped his own body.] Desmond Crowley: "The chains that bind." [He paraphrases the old adage.] Desmond Crowley: "Everyone in their life has at least one. Something that keeps them from doing something or saying something. Whether it is based out of morality, survivalism or kindness or even their skills at the politics of life, there is restraint." [Desmond tries to crane his neck, it fails. Not very easy to do with chains wrapped around it.] Desmond Crowley: "Punching that loud mouth in your office, drinking your bank account dry, confessing feelings for that girl in the cubicle over." [As if to emphasize his point, he struggles against his confinements.] Desmond Crowley: "Restraint." [His smile turns coy.] Desmond Crowley: "I see it in even Lucas Bergeron's eyes. He would like people to believe he is a loose cannon. He would like people to believe there is no restraint in his life. He would like people to believe he is a wild animal." [He leans in. As much as he can't without falling over, anyways.] Desmond Crowley: "Impulse. Gluttony. Urges. These are the things he would like everyone to think are what overrides all other things." [Crowley pauses, straightening up, taking a moment to reflect.] Desmond Crowley: "The Demolition Man." [He says it like a man mimicking something they've heard.] Desmond Crowley: "But I see the truth when I look into the eyes of Lucas Bergeron." [He let's that hang.] Desmond Crowley: "Fear." [Sharp exhale, he finds that humorous.] Desmond Crowley: "Fear for what others will think of him. Fear that someday the restraint will cave just enough. Someday he will do something that makes them look at him differently. That he will mess up what good he has going for him in his life and they will only see one thing." [Crowley pauses, again for dramatic effect.] Desmond Crowley: "A monster." [The look in his eyes shows he's aware him of all people saying that is humorous, given his client.] Desmond Crowley: "And, that is the fundamental difference between him and you, Mr. Bergeron. The only restraints on him are outward ones. And, I don't speak purely on the theatrics that make up his entrance to the ring." [He struggles against his own confinements to make a point when he brings up Nemesis' entrance.] Desmond Crowley: "My client likes a fight. And, despite popular belief, he is not an idiot. He knows of the rules and he knows following the rules will prolong the experience. It will give him what it is he wants, as opposed to what happens when he breaks the rules." [Relaxing, Desmond is a touch unnerved suddenly.] Desmond Crowley: "However you have placed the two of you in a setting where there are no rules. There is nothing stopping him from indulging in any thought that crosses his mind. There is no threat of the official stopping the match should he stray from the basics the sport was founded on." [Crowley's expression is a grave one.] Desmond Crowley: "And, I reiterate, he is not an idiot." [His voice is solemn when he repeats himself.] Desmond Crowley: "As you suffer, and believe me you will suffer, I want you to remember that. I want you to remember that it was you that made this match. That it was your foolhardy nature that led you to this. And, then I want you to remember every single thing that keeps you from tipping over that edge you would like people to believe you are dangling on. And, remind yourself." [Desmond pauses.] Desmond Crowley: "Remind yourself that he has none of those things. Because, these chains that bind..." [Suddenly the chains drop from Desmond's body, like a magic trick. Similarly the literal web of chains around him on the stage drop to the floor too with a loud thud.] Desmond Crowley: "Are coming undone." [Fade.] |
