The FIW narrative

This is something I had posted in the War Room and I was interested in getting some more eyes on it and wanted to see what people thought.

Quote:

I've been wanting to make a post for awhile regarding... I dunno what you would call it... I guess it'd be the "FIW Narrative." Something to give people a better idea of how things work in the FIW's alternate reality that addresses possible storyline plot holes with the fed.

This isn't word-for-word what I'd put, but more of an idea.

"Remember the wrestling bubble bursting around 2001 or 2002? In the world where FIW exists, the bubble never burst. In fact, since 2001 pro wrestling has become a mainstream mainstay in North America. Now, of course, WWE rules over the wrestling world. ROH, TNA, PWG, CZW, Chikara, New Japan, All Japan, NOAH, all the 'real world' promotions, they exist and aren't that far behind. But plenty - maybe hundreds - of wrestling promotions are actively running and competing with one another, whether they're filling national guard armories or football stadiums. Just about every major metropolitan city has a well funded wrestling school that churns out talent, faster and more refined than ever before. With business booming as much as it is, there are lots of opportunities and lots of different places for talent, in the ring or backstage, to work.

Now, where does FIW fit into this world? They're one of the top wrestling promotions in North America - maybe the world! Monday night you can catch ReVolt on Showtime, one of it's highest rated shows. It's even one of the highest rated pro wrestling programs on television (which is staggering, considering nearly every cable - and some network - television station airs professional wrestling in primetime at least once a week). But don't just catch them at home, look for them on the road as well. FIW does run live events on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Friday live events tend to focus more on the younger talent trying to catch a break and lose the "enhancement" label. Saturday shows are more 50/50 young talent looking for their big break and FIW stars competing at the highest level. Sunday matinees mostly consist of all your favorite FIW wrestlers squaring off, with the week ending in a bang with ReVolt airing live on Monday nights on Showtime."

This isn't the whole thing, but I wanted to address several different points:
- FIW's roster turnover
- The billions of e-feds out there
- My big issue - FIW running house shows!
- Where all the "real" promotions fit in the FIW world and where FIW fits in the "real" world

Like I said I'm far from finished, but wanted to get some feedback for the idea. I've been mulling it over for a pretty long time now.

Your thoughts, if any.

I like this and I've never seen something like this done before. I think that it would be a great reference for people applying to the fed and wanting to better fit into the world by knowing how the rest of us view it. There's nothing worse than coming to a new place and making an ass of yourself by saying something that sounds awesome to you but the rest of the roster is like "Uh... wha?"

Also, I'm not sure if I should address it here or not but have we thought about changing FIW from Showtime to another channel? Perhaps even creating an original channel for FIW? Or hell, changing FIW to its own self-sustained network? Not quite WWE's internet network but maybe an actual television channel that airs ReVolt/Fallout every Tuesdays and throughout the week it could have original content as well as air old shows or even non-FIW shows. It doesn't have be a wrestling network but a high profile network that FIW owns and runs their own shows on.

My only issue with Showtime is really suspension of disbelief. It's one thing to be on cable, it's another thing to be on a cable channel that you have to specifically subscribe to. As a company, it's not the smartest move in the world. I suppose, though, that the argument could be made that FIW has such a strong presence in this world that people would pay for Showtime just to see its shows. But we could just as easily say that FIW owns its own network and it comes in regular cable packages.

Just a random thought.

FIW seems to be a perpetual money making machine so I think it would work to have them on their own self-sustaining network. Failing that, we put FIW on several channels. All the ones that the other real-world federations happen to have, by the way.

Meaning:

USA: Raw
SyFy: Smackdown
El Rey Network: Lucha Underground
Destination America: TNA

Of course, as big as we are we're probably not in any shape to compete with WWE, but we are that alternative WWE desperately has been searching for to step their level of competition up. I like to think FIW makes WWE a better company simply by existing, because we'd smoke Vinny Mac if he ever took his foot off the gas.

I agree, I think having that narrative adds a lot more to FIW itself and, like Lita said, it gives new RP'ers coming in something to reference and get a full idea of what FIW is all about and how it fits into everything else. I've actually wondered this myself; about whether or not FIW acknowledges real-life promotions and real-life wrestlers or if it exists in its own reality where none of those exist. I think this would anchor it to something to make it seem more real.

I like the idea of FIW having its own self-sustaining network, but I'm just as fine with it being on Showtime or some other channel as well. Either way works for me.

Could've sworn I read somewhere in the rules, or some thread, about FIW hand waving the existence of the WWE in our RPs and shows.

Someone can allude to it or make a small nod. But it's poor form to openly name drop real life wrestlers.

Because it's cheap and lazy to namedrop real wrestlers. I know, I used to do it. :P

We can acknowledge they exist so long as we don't actually use any WWE stuff or whatever in our roleplays.

The way I look at it is that what we are doing is fantasy and a lot of our reps for characters come from real life. I don't agree with acknowledging a real life wrestling promotion in a fantasy setting. Mentioning another e-fed on the other hand would fall into the realm of a fantasy wrestling promotion. I like the idea of the FIW Network rather than naming an actual network.

For example when Quincy first joined he was a former UFC champion and I was just like 'meh'...it seemed too over the top to me. I would have much rather him just to have said he's a former MMA champion or even make up a fantasy MMA promotion for his character.

We could call it Full Intensity Network and it could feature wrestling, mixed martial arts, as well as other sports and more "intense" programming. However, the turns it's initials to FIN and then we'd have to give Finn McConnaigh his own television series... where he solves crimes with Sakura and Lucas. Finally! It all fits! Haha.

I dunno. FIN sounds weird but FIWN looks really weird. We may have to come up with a completely original name for the network that doesn't exactly reference FIW.

I don't even like having themes performed by reps. What I mean by that Billy Walker should probably be coming out to Badlands, but can't. Ever.

So yeah, alluding to reality is okay, but anything more specific is most definitely Poor Form.

I don't think we necessary need an acronym for it. We could just call it the FIW Network and leave it at that. If we do that I will probably change the name of the FIW Program Provider to the FIW Network.

On the change from FX to Showtime, it was more or less to explain our more mature content. We get away with things that there is no way that a basic cable network would allow, even one as lenient as FX (Deacon DEATH is a prime example for one). Also it was a chore creating commercial breaks and with Showtime they have no commercial interruptions, so I felt the move just made things easier and to me more realistic. My explanation for how we were funded without ad revenue was basically the contract with Showtime covered what FIW would have made in ad revenue on basic cable. HBO and Starz were under consideration but I see Showtime as the network that's been coming up the last several years and they were adding us to the network to help boost their own subscriptions to help them catch HBO..

But I'm fine with an FIW Network type thing as it could make sense as well.

I really don't have a problem with real world promotions being acknowledged, it just depends on the context.

A new character signs up and has "WWE Champion" in their title history and says they feuded with John Cena, The Rock and Hulk Hogan? Bad form. A new character signs up and has in their history that they had a developmental deal with WWE, worked a few dark matches but was released before they made it to TV? I don't think that's so bad. If they harp on it a lot, yeah, then it would be. Or in Quincy's case, "fmr UFC Heavyweight Champion" - bad. "Fmr Mixed Martial Arts Champion who had a couple fights with UFC but was given his walking papers after a couple of fights?" I don't have too much of a problem with that. Even in Jim's case, when I really started to flesh out his character 12 years ago, I wrote him to be this deathmatch legend in FMW and having classic matches for New Japan and All Japan with their biggest stars. Bad form. Changing things up to be Jim being a job guy who wrestled dark matches in All Japan, New Japan and FMW but never got any higher than curtain jerking? I don't think it's so bad. Like I said, I think it depends on the context.

I do think we should establish, in the FIW narrative, do WWE and other real world promotion exist or not? Because it's one thing to ignore them, but erasing them completely is another because that can lead down a pretty slippery slope of what/who exists and what/who doesn't.

If WWE is stricken from FIW lore than all those WWE references Clay Krueger made aren't gonna make sense in the future! :P

>___> So this means I shouldn't do that promo where I say WWE has been ripping off Neo for quite awhile? I mean...Roman Reigns totally ripped off "And you can believe that!" from Neo, dude used to end all of his promos with it before Roman even laced up a pair of wrestling boots.

Just a quick note... new person walks into a bar. Or here...sees "FIW Network" posting shows. "So you guys are a copy cat of WWE? Lame." Leaves. Therefore, to me, Network is a bad name. A bad, overused name. Then again I personally don't even care. I never looked at this place as needing a narrative, I actually forgot all that Showtime or whatever stuff. I just roleplayed myself with with people.

I will say that I too am a bit of an eye roller when it comes to people saying they beat WWE's so and so or how they're best friends with some random famous person. I tend to stay away from that excluding mentions. Like how Katy Perry's "Fireworks" is among the forbidden songs from Emily's personal track list for students. Or EPTLS. Stuff like that.

Also, and since I know it may open floodgates and be quickly shot down, I would feel amiss if I didn't bring up the possibility of Steele Media producing FIW shows. Don't worry, I scratched it off already. I just wanted to say it.

Party on,
Joe.

I dunno...Why is there such a negative thing that WWE exists? Is it because they like big guys?

I don't think real promotions should be completely ignored, I think even Schwartz made a mention of Stephanie McMahon talking about someone lacking "killer instinct" on TV like three weeks after his whole speech about the FIW locker room lacking killer instinct when he put the FSC on the shelf. Like Jim said, saying you tried to come up through a real-life promotion or fighting organization or even the NFL but never broke it big isn't really a bad thing. But if you try to act like you were some major star from somewhere else is just going to get you called out and make you look like a horse's ass in the end.

I'm not saying anyone's promos should be littered with references of real life things and people but we definitely can't act like they don't exist in the same universe, otherwise that sort of kills the realism aspect that we try to maintain.

On the Network name, I won't lie that I'm somewhat in the same school of thought as Jo (go fig...). I don't dislike it but I do agree that it hearkens a little too close to WWE. I already cringe and try to avoid terms like "FIW Superstars" or "FIW Universe/FIW-Verse" because those are pretty much coined WWE terms so I can see how FIW Network could be looked at as an unoriginal name.

I honestly don't see what was so bad about just keeping on Showtime. I don't see how much more further of a stretch that people would subscribe to the second biggest premium channel to watch a wrestling show with no commercial breaks over the narrative that FIW would be able to fund its own network (especially since it wasn't exactly smooth sailing for someone like WWE in its first year). Not to mention Showtime has its own On Demand service and I think seems a little more fathomable than creating an arbitrary fictitious network. But if we do, I do agree we should come up with something a little more catchy of a name than FIW Network.

If anyone has anything better I'd be happy to change it. I've always loathed the FIW Program Provider name ever since Oni introduced it.

I wasn't all that thrilled with FIW onShowtime for reasons mentioned earlier. But considering Fiw's level of violence, language and even sex appeal (I don't see any of our Hellcat s wrestling in full length dresses :P) it makes sense for them to be on a network like Showtime or HBO.

I know Fiw used to be on FX, could it potential ly be on FXX? I don't really know if Fxx is Fox's equivalent of Hbo or if its just another channel for Fox and FX's leftovers.

Hmm. You know, I know HBO gets big ass ratings with shows like Game of Thrones. Looking at Showtime though, their highest rating was 1.1 with the Series Finale of Dexter. Sure that's about a little over 2 million people, but if my years of dirt sheet reading have taught me anything that's an Impact rating if I ever saw one :P

It was like 2.8 million and combined with the second airing it got up to 3.3. Across all the platforms (on demand, DVR playback, etc.) they were getting 6.4 million viewers per week during the final season. It's just the nature of TV watching habits today, no one has to really watch anything live. RAW is about the only wrestling show I watch on the night it's on, and even then I'm usually two to three hours behind because there's no urgency to watch when I know I can watch whenever I please. Smackdown and Impact I usually don't even catch until the weekend because there's even less urgency. Actual sports is about the only thing that is truly DVR proof nowadays, and even then that's only so much, they're just the hardest thing to avoid getting spoiled.

Anyways was rambling a bit. My main point is live ratings are extremely misleading nowadays. With the fact that most hit programs are replayed four to five times a week, the advent of DVR, on demand programming and more networks getting into streaming services, you have to pretty much combine all of it together to really see the success of a program.

I just checked it out and even RAW's live numbers aren't that great. Better Call Saul beat them 2.6 to 1.7 the week before last, and that was supposed to be the Go-Home Mania show. WWE would never put that up on their "Did You Know?" bumpers they put up after commercial breaks though... ;) It'd be interesting if they had the balls to admit it.

I wouldn't be opposed to moving to HBO though, the storyline for us not going there was they had a number of demands and were putting ReVolt on a shorter leash where Showtime basically gave FIW full leeway on content distribution and for the night of programming. It could be said that HBO saw FIW gaining so much success on Showtime that they want the contract now and is more willing to give them free reign as they know it's bringing them additional subscribers.
