The wall of mirrors in Gold's Gym doesn't only reflect Tempe's early morning sun; It also reflects the ernest faces of the dedicated early birds who are pumping iron and exercising before they have to start their workday. Well, and one other who probably hasn't been to bed yet and who happens to have her bright little corner of the mirrored wall covered with a towel.

Trainer: That's it! You've got it now. Just one more!

Without a rolling of the eyes nor a cocked glance to the trainer, Kailey Lane breathes in as she lowers the the weight bar to her chest then puffs the breath out as she pushes the bar up above her body. Her face shows the strain of a good lift, and her arms remain steady and determined. As she lowers the bar into its cradle she is filled with relief and pride. Man it felt good to get back to the basics. A hint of a smile on her lips, she lays prostrate for a moment just breathing.

Trainer: Alright, we're not done yet! Just sit tight for a minute. I need to go check on Mrs. Witherspoon.

The trainer nods his head to the left and Kailey glances into the relection in the mirror to see a rather rotund woman smartly attired in a typical gym outfit. Unfortunately, the outfit looked to be a few sizes too small, as if she were challenging the material to maintain its seams until she could actually fit into them. Her arm was waving wildly in an attempt to get the trainer's attention, the extra skin and fatty tissues between her elbow and shoulder undulating like waves on the ocean.

Kailey sits up, ducking her head beneath the bar of weights, and smiles softly as she reaches for her face towel. She closes her eyes, and in the span of a few seconds, imagines her life in twenty years .. and the smile fades. No, no thoughts like that. Focus on the present. Not the past nor the future. The here and now.

Here and now you were bested by a pipsqueak of a girl. Now, actually, that qualifies as the past. Okay. Here and now you are about to face someone you almost made friends with years ago but he sold out to a rickety agent, someone else you would have made friends if only they had come along a few months ago, and that someone's partner who .. who.. yeah.. what about her?

Puzzled, Kailey takes a deep breath and sighs. She frowns for a fraction of a second then casts her eyes to the ceiling. No matter. We aren't thinking of anything but how to win. How to best this strange trio of do-gooders.

??: Well, well, well. My, how the mighty have fallen.

Kailey's head jerks around startled, lost as she was in her thoughts. There, standing awfully well dressed and manicured so early in the morning was Rebecca Hunter, Full Intensity Wrestling's answer to Howard Conkrite, except in a skirt and tight blouse with her cleavage hanging out in all the right places. And the nail polish. And the seduction bit. Okay, maybe less Howard Conkrite and more Marilyn Monroe. Either way, there she was, standing hand on hip, looking down at Kailey like a spider with a fly caught in it's web.

Rebecca: Seems like only yesterday when you were in the main event, contending for all the right titles, tempting the mighty and mastering the squared circle. Now where are you?

Rebecca clicks her tongue disparagingly and shakes her head sorrowfully. Disgusted at hearing her own thoughts brought out into the light of day, Kailey merely rises from the weight bench and turns her back on Rebecca, who reacts with a smarmy smile. The interviewer pouts playfully.

Rebecca: Ah, hurts to hear it outloud, huh? Poor thing.

The condescending tone of Rebecca's voice proves that her words carry no sympathy. Kailey tosses her face towel over her shoulder and moves to the next machine, still giving the interviewer a view of her back.

Rebecca: What? No reply? No arguement? No attempt to regain face? What's wrong? The good girl turned bad can't think of anything to say? Maybe this tough image you are trying to pull off falls flat even out of the ring?

Kailey stops moving and her shoulders straighten. Relieved, Rebecca smiles, satisfied that she finally got a rise out of Kailey.

??: Ply your trade elsewhere, you Playboy Centerfold wannabee.

Shocked, both women turn their heads in tandem at the new voice. Rebecca's hackles rise with her eyebrows and she raises her hand like a hissing cat, ready to scratch someone's eyes out. Kailey, on the other hand, stands with her mouth open, surprised that this particular person has shown up at all after everything that has happened.

Ignoring her death stare, Toby Bostock walks valiantly past Rebecca, and takes Kailey by the elbow.

Rebecca: What do you want?

He glares at Rebecca as he pulls Kailey passed her and toward the exit. He throws his words over his shoulder as he beats a hasty retreat.

Toby: She's needed at the arena.

Still wondering why Toby has come to fetch her in such a strange yet determined fashion but thankful for the interruption, Kailey allows her old... ex? friend and fellow sci-fi geek, Toby Bostock, to escort her away from the scene, leaving Rebecca frustrated and empty, her verbal barrage on Kailey put on hold by a forced, if temporary, cease fire.

A block away, Kailey shakes off Toby's grasp of her arm. Toby stares at his hand as if it were in pain.

What the heck is so urgent, Toby? Why am I needed at the arena?

Toby glances down at the concrete beneath their feet and clears his throat. He answers her quietly, worried that Kailey might blow a fuse over his answer.

You aren't. Well, not right now at least.

Kailey stops in her tracks and swings her head toward Toby, mouth agape. He doesn't notice until she isn't in step with him. He turns back to her and grins sheepishly.

What?

Kailey purses her lips and tries to look angry, but it isn't quite happening, 'cause this is Toby.

Well, what else was I going to do? I showed up there to interview you and was waiting for Jorge when I saw that heathen woman approach you from behind.

Hands on her hips, Kailey's eyes narrow as she watches Toby squirm. Their eyes meet and he swallows hard, then hangs his head.

I.. I just couldn't let her talk to you like that.

Kailey's eyes widen in surprise and her hands fall to her sides. She tilts her head and glances down the street, thinking. She looks back at Toby, who still has his head lowered as if counting the specks of sand in the cement, and her face softens. She closes the space between them and leans in against him with a nudge.

Thanks.

Toby looks up with a grin and holds his elbow, inviting Kailey to latch on. She does so and Toby pats her hand.

So... what is going on with you?

It's Kailey's turn to look at the sidewalk as she lazily walks beside him.

Oh... I don't know anymore, Tobes.

Toby cuts his eyes over to find Kailey diligently eyeballing the concrete. He fights the urge to pat her hand again opting instead to remain silent. Tough thing for a guy like Toby to do when you think about it.

Kailey sighs deeply and looks up to the sky. Toby keeps them putting one foot in front of the other, hoping that at least he has his friend back for the moment. He secrets a glance toward Kailey and finds her oddly blowing her breath upward making the hair falling across her forehead flutter.

I don't think I told you before, but I like your hair like that.

Kailey's head whips around to give Toby a questioning look. He points to her head and then reaches up with his free hand to touch a lock of her red and black hair.

It looks gamey.

Kailey's eyebrows raise and she almost laughs. Toby suddenly realizes how that sounded and he blushes.

Aw! You know what I mean! Like a gamer chick!

Now Kailey does laugh, much to the surprise and glee of our man, Toby. But only moments later, she turns silent and he looks at her worriedly. A deep and solemn frown has creased itself across her whole face. She pulls her arm from his elbow and shoves her hands into the pockets of her sweatpants.

I think I am losing it, Tobes. I don't have what it takes anymore. I feel like half a person. Like something is missing, ya know?

She looks at Toby, hoping to see a glimmer of understanding, but he is just staring at her blankly. She huffs and runs a nervous hand through her hair.

I mean, you're walking around in life, having fun... meeting people... working hard. You think you have it all figured out then... WHAMMO! ... train wreck. And from then on out, you aren't whole. You aren't yourself, because half of you is missing... somewhere else... not even paying attention.

Or...

Kailey taps his arm as if to get his attention though her eyes don't meet his. It is as if her mind is going full speed and he is trying to figure out how to hitch a ride. They pass a coffee house, its waking customers sipping coffee and reading newspapers at the bistro -like tables out front. That is until a blond with red and black dye in her hair comes near, angstily going on about some train wreck to some geeky guy in a suit. Well, this might be better than the crosswords...

Or they ARE paying attention, but they aren't someone you can see yourself with. I mean, like... REALLY see yourself with, say.. in twenty years. Your head KNOWS they are worthless pieces of crap, but your heart won't let them go. Your heart wants... needs... this person, but every logical fiber of your being screams NO! They will hurt you, and beat you down, and make you weak, and.. and..

Kailey stops in her tracks and Toby turns to look at her, really look at her. Tears are dropping from her eyes like heavy raindrops, not even bothering to trail down her cheeks gracefully.

...make you whole!

Kailey slides down the brick outer wall of the coffee house collapsing in a heaving heap of sweat and tears. Thunderstruck, Toby glances around at the curious faces of the caffinated minions some of whom are chuckling and pointing. Suddenly feeling overprotective, Toby crouches down beside Kailey and looks defiantly at one of the more jubilant onlookers.

Ah... drink your coffee!

Huddled in her little ball of emotion, something snaps. Kailey stops sniffing and gets very quiet, listening to Toby and the customer verbally go at it. She lets him continue for another minute then explosively pushes Toby off of her as she leaps to her feet. Toby tries to catch his balance but can't and falls into the nearest table, knocking it and its contents to the concrete below. The people sitting at that table are rather surprised to say the least to find their latte's in their laps.

Ha!!! I can't believe you fell for that nonsensel!

Wide eyed, Toby stares up at Kailey, unable to believe that her emotional breakdown was just an act. And if it was, she deserved an Oscar. Not sure now who he should be more angry with - Kailey or the patrons laughing at him - he cringes.

You are too easy, Toby.

When he realizes she isn't going to help him up, he fights to get up from under the tumbled mass of table legs and chair backs. Kailey ignores his battle and walks away from the chaotic scene not deeming to give even one look behind her. Unamused, Toby dusts himself off and helps to right the table and chairs. He looks after Kailey, toying with the notion of following her, but then decides against it. He shakes his head and shrugs his shoulders, determined not to let her get to him. Waving down a waiter, he orders new lattes to replace the ones that belonged to the people he crashed into and then orders a double for himself.

It was going to be one of those days.

Minutes later, Kailey stumbles into a quiet little park in the middle of town. She makes her way to the edge, careful not to disturb the children playing and collapses on the grass. She hugs her knees close to her body and hides her face as her shoulders sudder and shake.-
