We open on a very simplistic set. There is a comfortable chair, next to a small wooden table. On the other side of the chair is a potted plant and behind is a blank, black, wall. Sat in the chair is a very serious looking Liam Mortell. He is dressed in a dull-grey suit, with a white shirt. His eyes are fixed on the camera, yet he is not looking at the camera but ‘past’ it and directly at us, the viewers. Liam: “This public announcement is my way of apologising for last week. My behaviour was completely irresponsible, and my actions were a childish eruption of my frustrations.” Liam pauses. His tone of voice lets us know that this ‘public announcement’ is, perhaps, not completely his idea. There is a forced element to it. Liam: “I take full personal responsibility for my actions, and all damages were paid in full to the hotel by myself. The management would like me to make it clear that FIW in no way bailed me out or paid the hotel management and totally separated themselves from the incident.” The last part is spoken with particular distain. It’s clear that Liam resents the management for doing this. Liam: “I would also like it to be known that I have received medical attention, in regards to my behaviour and that if you suffer from similar outburst to call the number on the bottom of the screen now.” As if by magic, the number appears. Liam: “I understand that if I act in such a manner again, my contract with FIW could be at risk. FIW does not take the destruction of public or private property lightly and offenders are dealt with in a suitable manner.” The number disappears. Liam: “On a more personal note, I would like to apologise for my poor performance in the trial series to date. Whilst I have often held my own in matches, I have only scored one victory. This is not acceptable, and I feel I could do much better. I hope that today will be a turning point, and I will start to win future matches. Whilst I do not expect to win all the matches before me you will see a marked improvement in my effort.” Liam, having seemingly gone off-script for the last part and showing his true intentions, goes back to the script for the final wrap-up. Liam: “I hope that in future no one does what I did, and seeks help before it gets to that point. Thank you, and good evening.” We fade to black. |
