The two leather armchairs fit comfortably into their surroundings, an oak panelled room, with several gilted lighting fixtures, each providing a dim, orange light. In between the two chairs is a wooden fireplace, intricately carved with trees and other forest designs. Within the fireplace is a roaring wood-fuelled fire. It spreads heat and light throughout the room, in the same orange glow. Sitting in the soft, brown, and high-backed, leather chairs are Gunnar Leland, to our left, and Liam Mortell, to our right. The two look very relaxed and comfortable, each with a small tumbler with some kind of spirit. Liam is attired in some smart black slacks, and a deep purple jumper over a white shirt, which is unbuttoned at the top so it sits comfortably around his neck. Similarly, Gunnar is wearing some grey slacks and a blue shirt that is unbuttoned. They simultaneously place their tumblers down on the convenient side tables besides each chair.

Gunnar: “I must say, you have a wonderful home here.”

Liam: “Thank you. I decorated it when I moved over here, to remind me of my home back in England. It’s a little old fashioned, but sometimes I think that is just what is needed. Too many houses nowadays are bright, silver and cold. What is wrong with being warm and cosy?”

Gunnar: “Nothing at all. Not in my opinion, anyway. But I would have thought, what with your revival and restructuring of your wrestling style, that perhaps all other areas of your life would be…modernised, for lack of a better term…”

Liam: “Perhaps, I can see why that might be the case. But if something is working, then why bother changing it? I changed my wrestling style because it wouldn’t have worked in today’s wrestling federation. It had become too predictable, and thus not very successful. So, I modified the way I wrestled, but I did not throw everything out and start again. Things that did work, I kept in my repertoire. Take, for example, the M Bomb. It is a move I have been using since the very start of my career…”

Gunnar: “Of course, in fact I recently one of your earlier matches. It certainly was far from the matches you are capable of today and you were quite a different wrestler. Though, if I recall correctly, you did win with the M Bomb.”

Liam: “As I have with many matches, not perhaps so much today what with my shoulder not being what it once was. But my point stands that the M Bomb is a successful move and thus I’ve kept it. I’ve not thrown it away. I think it is indicative of today’s throw-away society, when people are willing to through away perfectly good things, or techniques just to get something new.”

Gunnar takes a sip from his glass, about half of the measure, before replacing it on the side table. He sits up slightly in the chair, bringing his hand to his mouth, with one finger stroking his moustache. An idea pops into his head, he briefly points at Liam as he moves his hand back to the arm of the chair and begins to speak again.

Gunnar: “Speaking of ‘throwing away’, what do you think of Crackerjack’s intentions for the International championship, and his apparent indifference about winning or losing?”

Liam: “Crackerjack is clearly a man who other troubles in his life which, I have to admit, I am unaware of. I prefer not to follow the personal lives of my opponents – only their wrestling career. Prying is not something I like to do, if it is not presented in front of me I won’t search for it. That is not the kind of guy I am. However, whenever I hear wrestlers say that they don’t care for title belt they are holding it angers me deeply.”

Gunnar raises an eyebrow, inquisitively, Liam takes this sign to go on and continues to explain.

Liam: “Crackerjack says he knows how hard I have worked to get into the position of challenging for the International championship. And yes, perhaps it would be infuriating to loose my chance, and to end the trial series without having equalled up my wins and losses. Nonetheless, it would be even more infuriating, it would be exasperating to take that title without a true fight. I’d implore Crackerjack to give one hundred percent, for the sake of the trial series at least.”

Gunnar: “How have you found the trial series? You’ve been the first in the history of Full Intensity Wrestling to experience such a thing. Is there anything you particularly liked or disliked? Did you find it challenging?”

Liam: “It certainly has been an experience.”

Liam chuckles lightly.

Liam: “That’s for sure. The word ‘challenging’ doesn’t quite cover it though. It was very difficult facing the elite of FIW. The very best that the company has to offer were thrown against me week after week. My first match, for example, was against the Dual Crown champion, a man who has held the top title in this company for seven months. But, if it wasn’t difficult then I wouldn’t have learnt so much from the trial series and it wouldn’t have been half as interesting. Sure, I lost four matches but some were very close and my victories were big and have all been, I’d like to point out, by submission.”

Gunnar: “You certainly have been very impressive, and I’m not just saying that because you’re supplying me with this sublime whiskey.”

Liam: “I’ve loved being apart of the trial series, and I hope that the management continue the trial series in the future. I hope that other wrestlers will get the benefit from facing tougher competition, like I have. And, please, help yourself to more when you’re done.”

The two down the rest of their current glass of whiskey, and begin to fill up from a small decanter which is on each of their side tables. Gunnar pours significantly more into his tumbler, but Liam doesn’t seem to mind, in fact he seems amused by it. Gunnar pulls a cigar out his pocket and throws a look at Liam, asking the question ‘Do you mind if I…?’ Liam returns the looks with one that says ‘Not at all’, allowing Gunnar to light the cigar and begin to smoke. He exhales upwards, sending a pillow of air up towards the ceiling. They continue to sip from their glasses, and Gunnar continues to smoke, before he finally decides it is time to ask more questions.

Gunnar: “What’re your thoughts on your other two opponents, who are also vying for the International championship?”

Liam: “Elrick, it seems, has a personal vendetta against Crackerjack, more than a desire to win the championship. Whilst I think he knows that the title would be beneficial to him it is merely an added bonus, should he manage to defeat Crackerjack himself. It is for that reason that I feel I will not see too much trouble from either of them. Elrick is not one to be defeated easily, and I’m sure I will have to keep an eye on any attempts to make a pinfall. It is, after all, a fatal four way match and not an elimination-style bout.”

Gunnar: “That is indeed correct.”

Gunnar takes another, slightly large, drink of his whiskey and continues to puff away on his cigar as before.

Liam: “This leaves me with Grant Rice, who has always been somewhat of an enigma. At least, I have no idea what he thinks of me. He comes from a very different background to me – not that that is a bad thing – it is just a…point of interest. As a wrestler he is, as the other two are, very impressive and not someone to be taken lightly."

Gunnar: “Certainly not.”

He pauses, they drink.

Gunnar: “Violence Fetish is famous for one match in particular: the Condemned Fetish match. What do you think to being included in such a violent and vicious match? And what are your chances of winning the shot at the Dual Crown championship?”

Liam: “I’m going to be honest as say that my chances of victory will be around zero percent. It is not that I don’t have self belief, I’m just a realist. As such I recognise that when fighting against twenty six others, I don’t have much of a chance of victory, especially when I’ll have just gone through a fatal four way for the International championship. I know that most of the wrestlers will be fine to compete in two matches – but with my age and level of stamina it’s going to be exhausting.”

Gunnar: “But the hardcore environment is not one that is new to you, is it?”

Liam: “Oh no, not in the slightest. I have been in some brutal matches over my time, admittedly not something with as many competitors and with such sadistic conditions of victory, but I am no stranger to the sight of my own blood. Perhaps I may be able to eliminate some people, in they underestimate my ability to use weapons and I think that’ll be the most I can hope for.”

He notices that Gunnar’s glass is empty.

Liam: “Please, help yourself to more.”

Gunnar: “Don’t mind if I do!”

The fire slowly gets larger and louder, until its occasional crackling and orange flames fill our senses. A few moments later, and we cannot see nor hear anything.
