MAIN EVENT : FIW DUAL CROWN CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH Standard Rules Match Jim O'Brien vs. Kiyoshi Nakahata © Referee: Tony Clarke ... is the image our scene opens up to. Again. But the camera slowly pans backwards, revealing the entire setting. We find FIW's First Monster, the Man in Black Jim O'Brien seated on a folding chair in the locker room. He holds in his hand the very card that the camera opened up on. WIth a sheepish grin, he gets the ball rolling. O'Brien: "Look what they let me take home. Wasn't that nice of them?" Clad in his usual array of a Metallica T-Shirt partially covered by a red flannel shirt over top of it, blue jeans on his lower body & black boots on his feet, Jim folds the card back up & sticks it in a nearby gymbag. O'Brien: "I'm gonna stick that in a frame when I get home. Maybe they can give me another copy I can autograph & donate somewhere." Jim finally gets this week's card put away. He turns his attention back to us. He pauses, then a small cackle escapes his airways. O'Brien: "Y'know... This is a bit of a homecoming for me. I worked all over Japan when I was younger. I started wrestling in... '96, right outta school. Worked the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana region for about a year. Then as it turned out me and Matt Matthews, our trainer had some very deep connections with Japan. So it was Summer or early Fall of 1997 that I started my first tour with All Japan Pro Wrestling. And between then and the middle of '99 I worked... jeez... A lot of tours. Then that deal ran up and then me and Matt worked for Atsushi Onita in FMW from then until... I'll say the end of 2000. Worked a lot of tours there too. And in that year and a half, that's probably when I got the most over. I was workin' with Matt a great deal, and then there were the Takagi brothers, some of ya's out there might've heard of them, Yoshihiro & Akira. Me and Matt wrestled them in hundreds of matches in whatever combination of us four you could think of. And you could about guarantee blood was gonna be shed every time. I'd say about 85% of the deep scaring on my body was from my year & a half run with FMW. I didn't care, though. I was young and having fun." We get a little closer to Jim as his exuberance evaporates. O'Brien: "But it was also in that time that my personal life began to crumble. A lot of partying, a lot of drugs, I needed 'em. All those sick bumps I was taking, all the stuff I was putting myself through, I needed it. And it was at the end of 2000, management had enough. Me and Matt, I felt, made a ton of money for them. And they told us they didn't want us back in 2001 or ever again. So after that tour we tried to get back with All Japan, they didn't return our calls. Pro Wrestling NOAH didn't want anything to do with us. Finally, Inoki gave us a shot and in the spring of 2001 we started working with New Japan. And come the end of '01... Inoki didn't want us back either. Said we were a couple of crackheads and were burning our bridges with all the boys. Matt stayed in Japan with his girlfriend & they were gonna have a baby while I was damned back to the states. So there I was... burnt my bridges with All Japan, New Japan, and FMW where I was makin' a lot of money. Then back home my first wife filed for divorce. I worked pretty sporadically in '02 and the start of '03 and I was just a mess the whole time. Then I heard about this promotion based out of England called FIW. I got on there, cleaned up and the rest as they say is history." Jim leans back in his seat, rolling up his sleeves. His "Jesus Saves" tattoo on his left wrist becoming more visible. O'Brien: "Sorry for rambling. When you get me on the subject of working Japan, I tend to do that. I'm just... so grateful for the opportunities I was given. Maybe not then but sure as hell am now. Some of the hottest crowds I ever worked in front of were in this country. And I always get excited about coming back here. So..." *chuckles* "... forgive me. Anywho... I caught wind of what Kiyoshi-san had to say. And y'know somethin'... I like him. Honestly, I haven't seen a whole, whole lot of his work. I don't know much about him. But he sounds like a smart young man. And he had some interesting things to say. And right now, I'd like to speak on them." Jim clears his throat and continues. O'Brien: "He brought up the Genocide '04 match I had with Silent Rage, where we just slaughtered eachother throughout the entire match. The better man won but I didn't accept it very well. So I beat him up some more. I'm not going to defend the action I took then. I'm not going to defend a lot of the things I used to do. Not because I felt I was in the right, because I wasn't. But because I was a lot different back then than I am today. I made a lot of mistakes, burnt a lot of bridges, rubbed people the wrong way. Even today, I imagine there's people who aren't at all pleased about my return or immediate title match. And that's fine, that's something I was expecting. I can't change the past... I can only be the man today that I should've been back then." Jim leans inward, his eyes hit the ground momentarily back to the camera. To the fans. To Kiyoshi. To everyone he's ever wronged. O'Brien: "It's different now. When I came in, I told the Boss that I didn't want protection. I didn't wanna go over John J. Jobber in my comeback and have a nice little spot on the roster where I could pick and choose my path because of my stroke in the locker room. I told him I wanted to fight who he felt was the most talented and most versatile. I wanted to fight who he felt was this company's measuring stick. And Kiyoshi-san, he picked you. And y'know somethin', man... It's not even about the belt. Today, it's not about belts. It's not about headlining or getting all my spots in my matches or getting the biggest payday or any of that stuff. No. That's not what drives me anymore. That's not what I want. Today... I want to fight. And I want to fight the best this company has to offer. If I win, I win. If I lose, I pick the pieces and get better. Even me - a two time Dual Crown Champion - can improve. And I want to keep working and keep fighting until I am once again this promotion's identity. A friend of mine outside the business asked me why in the world I would come back to FIW. He said I had everything I ever wanted. And I do. I have money. Love. The Lord. And I already have cemented a legacy in FIW. But now... Now it's time to start fresh. To start anew. Time to begin a new legacy. One I can look back upon and be proud of. And Kiyoshi-san, you've already started yours. You've got all the tools and the talent to reach my... legendary status. Heck, you'll likely surpass it. And that's fine with me. This isn't personal. I'm not ticked off or singling you out or anything. Just the best of one generation facing off with the best of the current generation." Jim leans backward in his seat, his stern vocal tone returning to peace. A small smirk crawling out of the right side of his mouth. O'Brien: "The only thing that remains is the only thing that matters to me, Kiyoshi-san. And that... is the fight. fade out |
