Tuesday, January 1st, 2008 A Retrospective Here were are, a brand new year. Welcome to 2008. I thought that perhaps, before I go looking forward into the year, I should first look back at the previous year. I must say that I think it might just be the best year I have had since my journey into the Wrestling World. I wonder if you out there that have followed my career would agree. How could you not say something like that when the year started off on a high note. You see, coming into the year 2007, Nightmare & I, a team many thought unlikely to last... we were yet to be defeated in the ring as a team. Since being paired together in the latter part of 2006, we remained victorious even given the friction that was present between the two of us. We would remain undefeated until a meeting with Toan & Prime, we fell. Though, some fans still argue that our defeat that night did not tarnish out undefeated streak given it went down in an unsanctioned match. I love they have that kind of passion to argue something like that on Nightmare & I's past, though I admit we lost. I consider a loss no matter if it happens in a sanctioned match or not, if it takes place under Hardcore rules or Standard. That's completely alright though, my year did no stop there. It was a little over a month later when Nightmare & I were once again victorious, this time defeating the likes of Hardcore Sex, Tanaka Zaibatsu and Maj Tahal & Ahmed to become the Tag Team Champions of the World. We would remain champions for a solid three months. We fall once again though, we lost the titles to Tanaka Zaibatsu and while we would go on to challenge them for the titles (and not come up victorious), that's not where our paths lead. Instead, Nightmare & I would start to distance ourselves from the Tag Team Division, we tested the waters in the Solo game and it was only a few more months down the road that I 'struck gold.' I say that, because I was able to end the reign of Ethan Adams as Fighting Spirit Champion, on an edition of ReVolt being held in my hometown of Kansas City no less. That night was crazy, let me tell you. I felt on top of the world, to claim singles glory... something I had yet to have done in FIW (though had done a few times during my NGIW days) but to do it in front of my family, my friends, my town. While I was only able to hold that title in my hands for three weeks before I was beaten for it, I will never forget the night I won it. Besides, losing it wasn't so heartbreaking. Why? At least it was Extreme Ninja #2 that was there to take it, someone I once fought beside as apart of the larger Revolution, not the 'version on a diet' version that is now Nightmare & I. He's another one that's had a hell of a year... but, this isn't about him. ![]() If my year was to end there, I think I would have been happy. Riding an undefeated streak crossing into the new year, a healthy Tag Title reign, a short but still a reign with the Fighting Spirit, would have probably been enough for me, but I remained hungry. I would 'eat' my way to something that I never thought would happen, at least not this year, I thought this years luck was up but boy was I wrong. Crackerjack had been running around instilling fear in many, he had done some unthinkable things such as the night he was involved in my partner Nightmare's ear being severed from his head. I myself would not buy into the hype, he may have been a savage but there is some savageness hiding deep inside me, perhaps only coming close to the surface during my NGIW run. So what was there to do? Face the man. That's exactly what I did, and when Management booked me in a match also involving Crackerjack, a match for the title he held at the time, the Undisputed International Championship... I made him tap. The year I thought could get no better, just took a leap into a whole new level. There I stood, Championship in hand, not only having beat 'the monster,' but made him submit to do so. I end this year of 2007 with said title still in my hands. I hope to say the same when we roll over to 2009, but let's be real here, there are far too many hungry boys in the back for that to happen easily. So, while my year may not have ended with another W in the win column, talking about the Grand Prix here, I still feel like I had a tremendous year. The question now becomes, can it be topped in 2008? I hope to achieve just that, looking back on the great year I just had, I am not relaxed but instead fired up, ready to set new goals and achieve new things. I bid goodbye to a 2007, and welcome a young 2008. I hope all my fans out there can have a great of a 2008 as I've had a 2007. Thank you for your support as well. - Grant Rice Posted by: Grant Rice at 11:59PM Subscribe To Feed Post Comment |
