Just like London town. The scene cuts in and the view opens in a small New York diner, late at night. With the exception of a few Japanese patrons, the place is more or less deserted. The camera pans around, passing the greasy Italian-American husband-and-wife duo running the business from behind the counter, before settling on a far corner occupied by two individuals. After a moments wait, the camera zooms in and focuses on Ash Koopa sitting across from Toby Bostock. Both men are dressed relatively casually, each wearing jeans and a plain t-shirt. Ash: "I can't believe that, the day after I give her the big break, the girls walks out on the company. I really thought you two had some magic.." Toby: "At the end of the day, Ash, you can't blame her. Janine's ties were with Constance and Sporkco; they weren't with us whatsoever. She was a bitch to work with and I bid her good riddance." Seemingly unimpressed with the comment, Ash cuts Toby a glare, making the interview feel incredibly uncomfortable. Toby shuffles in his seat and stares at the salt pot on the table in front of him, desperately praying for something intelligent to come into his head. Toby: "Well, at least we still have Becky.." Ash: "Who?" Toby: "Rebecca! We still have Rebecca." Ash: "There is no 'we' in this, Toby. As far as I'm concerned, that pre-show was a one-shot deal. I got what I wanted out of the deal, and that was to wrestle in front of a Reading crowd for one last time. I did that, rather successfully to an extent, and I have no intention of going through all of the stress of doing it over again for the next pay-per-view. You need to realise that." Reluctantly, Toby nods and takes a sip from a dirt-stained mug of coffee. Ash stares at him through-out the drinking process, forcing Toby to focus on the mug and avoid making eye contact. As Toby sets the mug down, Ash turns to look out the window. Toby: "So, if there are no plans for another show, why are you so concerned about Janine leaving the company?" Ash: "Because I saw it as an opportunity.." Toby: "For what, exactly?" Ash: "What's with all the questions, Toby? Last time I checked, you weren't Jeremy Paxman, so get off my bloody case." This time, Ash shuffles uncomfortably in his seat and stares out the window as Toby cocks his head to the left, eyeing Ash curiously. Drawing his attention from the window, Ash glances at Toby and turns back to the outside view, then suddenly whips his head back ground and glares at Toby. Ash: "What? What is it?" Toby: "You liked her." Ash: "No, it's not that." Toby: "Then what is it?" Ash: "Okay, fine. I got some inside information about the Sporkco sale early last week and I learnt about the ties between Sporkco and certain individuals. I was handed a list of names of people that I wasn't to use for the pre-show to prevent them from going 'over' on a live broadcast. Constance was on that list, so I knew he was going and, in my mind, I figured that management would be looking for a replacement analyst." Reluctantly, Ash sighs and looks to the table. Ash: "I may be a Reject, but I also like to think that I do good things for the right people when the time is right. As it stood, I figured that by putting you and Janine together, something would spark and management would pick one of you two up for the main broadcast team. Ideally you, which was why I put you with Janine, rather than Rebecca. No-one brought it to my attention about Janine's ties to Constance and she ended up getting exposure at the wrong time and place. That's why I'm annoyed, because I gave her an opportunity and she walked out." Toby: "You did that for me?" Ash: "I did it for both of you, but it was really for my benefit. I mean, to be the one responsible for getting someone onto an international hosting gig is a big deal. I'll have made you, Toby. All the credit for your success would be given to me. And whenever anybody thinks about Toby Bostock as a commentator, they'll all think about how generous I was to give you an opportunity on my big home-town show. It'd be one Hell of a memory, right?" A big grin breaks across Ash's face as he looks expectantly at Toby, who returns in kind with a grin of his own. After a few moments, Toby's gaze wanders upward and Ash follows it, as if picturing the same thing as Toby. Suddenly, Toby returns to reality and looks to Ash with a quizzical expression on his face. Toby: "So, you did that for me?" Ash: "Were you not listening to me?" A sheepish grin breaks on Toby's face as he shakes his head. Toby: "So what about Constance? If you were given a list of names not to use, why was Conse used on the pay-per-view?" Ash: "Beats me, Toby. Perhaps they gave him the big spot and in the hopes that he would choose to stay, rather than resign once the sale was made official. Either way, he did a professional job, as opposed to Janine who stunk up the show with her lousy comments." Showing his anger, Ash bites his bottom lip and shakes his head. At the same time, Toby turns and watches with awe as a bus drives past the window and rounds the corner out of sight. Again, Toby whips his head around and looks at Ash quizzically. Noticing the look, Ash groans to himself and takes a quick sip from a glass of cola. Toby: "So what's with Vinj joining the Rejects? Where did Onikage did him up from?" Ash: "You're asking the wrong guy, Toby. I'm the hired muscle; not the public relations officer." Toby: "You must know something though, surely? What about Drake's position?" Ash: "Not a clue. Onikage hires and fires at will, with very little communication between everyone in the group. Which is why I opted against talking in that segment from the other night. I have no clue what the Reject goal is, other than to strike fear into the hearts of the supposed Super Friends, which I'll have you know is a cheap rip-off of something else. And that's why the camera is here as well. It's been a quiet week for me, so I figured I'd get you down here and have the camera document a few words for Joe Public." Toby: "Then I'm just part of a little segment? You're using me?" Ash: "Essentially, yes. But no differently to how I used you on Sunday." Toby: "Oh." Satisfied with the answer, Toby glances out the window, then turns his attention back to Ash. All the while, Ash stares at Toby, as if anticipating the next question to come from his mouth. Toby: "Are you looking forward to wrestling at Madison Square Garden, especially considering that you're in the main event match?" With a slight smirk, Ash glares at Toby, then grabs his glass of cola. As Toby watches expectantly, Ash downs the remaining cola and sets his glass down on the table, then gets to his feet and grabs his jacket from the back of the chair, quickly slinging it over his arms. Ash: "See ya, Toby." And on that note, Ash adjusts the collar of his jacket and heads for the door without even looking back. Toby watches from his seat with a look of confusion and disappointment on his face, then turns around and focuses on his cup of coffee. Toby carefully lifts the mug and takes a sip, then sighs to himself and stares at the salt pot. As Ash walks past the window, refusing to look at Toby, the scene begins to fade and eventually cuts to static. :: END :: |
