It is cold, and dark. A single lamppost stands on the empty sidewalk, barely illuminating the slabs below. A couple of people quickly shuffle into the light their breath emanating from their lips in a pale white steam. They turn their backs disappear towards the darkness, the clack of their shoes hitting the floor as they ascend some stone steps. Slowly, from the same steps, a figure descends. The figure steps towards the lamppost, he is wearing a dark suit, with a light shirt and a dark tie. When close enough, his face is revealed. Liam leans against the lamppost, the light hits the top of his head, his forehead and his nose, but everything else is hidden by shadow. Liam: “People have been telling me that I made the wrong decision this week. They have said that I shouldn’t have gone out and interfered in Kennedy’s match and stopped her getting hit with the chain, that I should I have just left them to it. They said that I knew I would incite Ethan by being at ringside, and that I purposely wanted him to hit me, so I could hit him back.” He sighs, softly. The air is decorated with his breath for a moment, obscuring his face. Liam: “They’ve got it completely wrong. The only reason that I even thought about going out to ringside was to protect Kennedy from being another victim of Xtreme Kitten and Lucy. I’ve been disgusted by his behaviour as of late and I’d be damned if I just let something like that happen, especially to someone I respect!” Xtreme Kitten is obviously still quite hated by Liam Mortell, which developed back at the start of his trial series. Even if it wasn’t the same man, Liam obviously believes Xtreme Kitten is still as deplorable as when they first had an encounter. Liam: “If Ethan Adams can’t restrain himself enough, then that is not my problem. I didn’t ask for him to jump down off that apron and abandon the woman he was supposedly helping. If I were a suspicious man, I’d suggest that it was part of his plan all along. For them to bring me down, to help Kennedy, allowing Ethan to seem ‘distracted’ by me, and for Kennedy to loose, and for it to look like my fault! It certainly seems like something Ethan would do.” Perhaps Liam did entertain this idea for a while, although it does seem a little far fetched with Xtreme Kitten’s usual uncooperative attitude, and even for someone as unpredictable as Ethan Adams. He takes a moment to pause. He coughs and it echoes around the empty street. Liam: “Ethan, you’re a very petty man. Even when I was helping Kennedy up afterwards you wouldn’t allow it. You wouldn’t let me appear to be the gentlemen that I am. You can keep pretending around her all you like, Ethan, but we all know what you’re truly like. No gentleman would have shoved me down when I was helping Kennedy up, you’re nothing but a glory hog. You want for everyone to look bad so you look better by comparison, but Ethan you are badly mistaken. You are the lowest of the low, you’re a conniving little bastard and no one would ever mistake you for anything close to being a gentleman.” This last tirade is said through gritted teeth. It is true what people say, that Ethan Adams affects Liam in a way that not many others have before. Their hatred of each other runs deeply. Liam coughs again, it echoes as before, but also gives us a change in subject, some focus on the upcoming match. Liam: “I’m very much looking forward to this Sunday. Some people might not understand the rules of this match, so allow me to clear it up for everyone, including you Ethan. The match itself is fought under normal rules. That means no weapons, no cheating, no Singapore canes, nothing of that sort. To win you have to beat your opponent just like in any other match. You see, it is when you defeat your opponent that the Singapore cane comes into play, because the looser has to present his back to the winner for him to beat with the cane.” Liam pauses, perhaps picturing the sight of Ethan preparing to be beaten with the cane. Liam: “It takes some kind of man to withstand that kind of punishment, to risk being beaten with the cane until they are bleeding and I doubt that Ethan is that man. I wouldn’t be surprised if he runs away after one hit. But even that one hit will be so sweet, a measure of revenge for everything that Ethan has done to me in the past. Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself here, and a win is hardly guaranteed. But right now, I’m feeling it. I’ve got this feeling that tells me I’m on a roll, and this best of seven series is within my grasp. This Sunday, is the next step to victory and I will take it, and Ethan will get one of these…” He pulls out a Singapore cane from behind the lamppost and holds it up into the light, smiling. Liam: “…across his acne-ridden back.” Liam steps back from the lamppost and swings the cane into it. There is a thunderous CRACK! Birds can be heard flying away in fear, as the sound reverberates around the street. Liam holds the broken cane up, then drops it on the street below, before walking away into the darkness. |
